1. Countable and uncountable nouns
A. Countable Nouns
A noun names a person, place, thing, idea, or emotion. There are two basic types of nouns count
nouns and uncountable nouns. Count nouns are things you can count, such as chairs and people.
Uncountable nouns are things you can’t count, such as water and air.
Examples

Nouns ending with consonant + change to -ies

The nouns in list 1 are countable. They have a plural form. The nouns in list 2 are uncountable. They don’t have a plural form.

Examples: Imagine that you are Mark or Linda below. Ask questions about your partner’s kitchen,
using any in your questions.
A. Linda, do you have any apples? A. Mark, do you have any bananas?
B. Yes, I do. B. Yes, I have some bananas.
A. Do you have any onions? A. Do you have any carrots?
B. Yes, I do B. No, I don’t have any carrots.
A. Do you have any potato chips? A. Do you have any canned tomatoes?

B. Uncountable Nouns
Uncountable nouns can be ideas (freedom), feelings (love), activities (golf), or things we measure
(oil) or group together (furniture). Uncountable nouns are always singular. Don’t add –s to these
nouns, and do not use a or an with them.
Examples Notes
Questions Do you have any apples or oranges at home? Would you like some apples?
Use some or any in questions. Use some in affirmative statements. Use any in negative statements.
Affirmative Statement I have some apples at home.
Negative Statement I don’t have any oranges at home.

Many people don’t eat certain types of food. Look at the pictures below and describe them. Do you
eat or drink these things?
I Don’t Want Any, Thank You
There are different ideas about what you should eat. There are also many ideas about what you
should not eat. Some of these ideas come from religion. For example, Muslims don’t eat any pork
because of their religion. Many Jews don’t eat any pork either. Some Christians don’t eat meat on
Fridays. Other Christians don’t drink any wine or coffee. Many Buddhists never eat any meat or
eggs at all. They eat a lot of rice, beans, fruit, and nuts instead. Most Hindus also don’t eat meat
because they are vegetarians.
Vocabulary:
Should/shouldn’t = Giving Advice (dar consejo). Ex.: You should eat healthy food. Muslims/Jews/Christians/Hindus = religions (musulmanos, cristianos, judìos, hindús) Wine = vino (it’s made of grapes) Never = nunca Instead = en vez de Also = también Vegetarians = vegetarianos

Some and Any with Uncountable Nouns
Write some or any in front of the following nouns.
Example: He doesn’t want any rice They don’t eat any meat. She needs some coffee to start the day. You don’t have any juice in the refrigerator. We don’t have any fruits and vegetables in the kitchen.

C. Questions with How many….?
We use how many? with countable nouns.
How many + countable noun + auxiliary verb (do-does) + subject + verb
Questions Possible Answers Notes
How many bananas do you have? How many eggs does she need for the cake?
I have three. She need two.
Use how many in questions with countable nouns.
Example: bananas
A. How many bananas do you eat each week? B. I eat a banana every day. C. I don’t eat any bananas. I don’t like them.

A. How many eggs does he eat per day? B. He eats one egg per day. C. He doesn’t eat any eggs. He doesn’t like them.
D. Questions with How much…?
We use how much? with uncountable nouns.

2. There is / There are Affirmative Statements
There + be (is-are) + subject Long Form Contractions
With a singular noun
There is a museum downtown There’s a museum downtown.
With plural nouns There are some banks in the downtown There’re many banks downtown.
Negative Statements
There + be + not (isn’t-aren’t) + subject Long Form Contractions
With a singular noun There is not a hotel in this town. There isn’t a hotel in this town.
With plural nouns There are not any stores downtown. There aren’t any stores in the downtown.

Vancouver Fact Sheet 01
Location: Vancouver is a big city in Canada. It’s 40 km north of the U.S.A. Population: Around 600.000 people live in Vancouver, and there are two million people in the area. Surroundings: There is a big park called Vancouver Park in the city. The ocean and the mountains are near. Facilities: Downtown there are lots of movie theaters, supermarkets, cafés and bars. But there aren’t any shopping malls – go to the suburbs for shopping.
