Use “es la” when you want to say one o’clock , use “son las” when you want to say any time other than one o’clock. Es la una y cuarto. (It’s a quarter past one,) Son las siete menos diez. (It’s ten minutes to seven.)
When telling time, you use the expression “y” up to and including thirty minutes past the hour and you use “menos” when you pass thirty minutes past the hour and you subtract from the coming hour. Son las dos y diez ( It’s two ten) Son las tres menos veinticinco. (It’s twenty-five to three.)
The following expressions are useful in indicating the time of day: de la mañana = in the morning de la tarde = in the afternoon de la noche = in the evening/at night
Son las diez de la mañana. (It’s ten o’clock in the morning.)
Son las once de la noche. (It’s eleven o’clock in the evening.)
Other useful expressions related to time:
en punto- sharp, on the dot, exactly.
Son las dos en punto. (It’s exactly two o’clock.)
Es el mediodía. (It’s noon.)
Es la medianoche. (It’s midnight.)
