My Dear Friends in Christ,
This weekend’s Gospel strikes real gold in terms of human
experience: after teaching, Jesus feels compelled to respond to the murmurs of the crowd. How often is this a
reality that we confront: something good happens, we break new ground, achieve something unexpected, or do
what we think is right. We expect approval and excitement from the crowds of family, coworkers, friends
or acquaintances (or parishioners!). Rather, we get
murmurs. If this is what Jesus experienced, can we expect anything less?
The murmurs, however, are not what matter. Our
response defines the outcome – as for Jesus, so for us. In the midst of adversity, do we respond as Elijah first does,
praying for our own demise (in ways small and large), or do we take heart and travel to the mountain of the Lord at
the Spirit’s urging? When confronted with murmurs, do
we cling more deeply to the Bread of Life, knowing that Christ has given His Life for us? These are, indeed, the
questions that determine the grounding of our lives in Christ. May the Lord be ever present to us when we
confront murmurs!
As mentioned in these pages previously, we have put some serious effort into our parish offices over the
summer. Tile floors are freshly waxed (for the first time in
a few years), the choir room has been remodeled, cleaned, and carpeted, a dedicated community meeting
room has been created, and the front office itself has been carpeted and rearranged. There are a few other projects
that continue, most notably our air conditioning
endeavors. As of publication, all HVAC bids have been submitted and are in the process of being reviewed. I will
continue to update everyone as more information become available.
As mentioned in last week’s bulletin, we will be offering
Adoration each Thursday afternoon beginning in September, from 3:30 pm – 8:00 pm. Please visit https://
sacredheartyonkers.org/adoration if you are able to
commit to a consistent half-hour. Sign-ups will also be available in the back of the Church. Please know that if
you cannot commit to a specific time each week, you are welcomed to join us in adoration whenever you are able.
We’re only having “sign-ups” in order to make sure we
have consistent weekly coverage.
Please pray for me – and know I’m always praying for you.

Children who have not been Baptized, or who did not receive the Sacraments of First Eucharist or Confirmation
at the “regular” time may begin this process beginning in September.

Faith Formation
RCIA
Thinking of becoming Catholic or of completing your Christian initiation in the Catholic community? The Catholic Church welcomes anyone who inquires about, or who seeks, full membership in the Church and Gospel life through RCIA (The Rite of Christian initiation of Adults), which is the Church’s process of preparing adults for the reception of the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist. Please call or email Fr. John (914-963-4205; [email protected]) if you (or anyone you know) would like to investigate or begin the process of RCIA. RCIA sessions will begin in early September.
Bible Study Group
Br Richard’s group will resume Tuesday, September 11 at 10:00 AM
in parish office. Subject matter will be Christology,
the study of the Person and Natures of Christ, which will include the Personality of Jesus.
Later in the year we will do Sacraments and time permitting some Church History.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word
The Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a special opportunity for
children at the 9:45 Mass to share the word of God
in an age appropriate reflection.
Children, 4 years through 3rd grade, are invited to come to the
Church Hall where they will celebrate the Liturgy of the Word.
They will return to the church at the Presentation of the Gifts.
Adult volunteers are always welcome!
If you would like to help, please call Deanne in the Parish Office,
or email at [email protected].
