the district, has a professionaldegree and work experiencewithsometophotels.“IreturnedtoDantewadabecauseIwantedtoworkhere.Anybaked iteminDantewada has to be sourcedfromJagdalpur,whichisover85kmaway,”hesaid.Paul has already started

workingonpackagingthebakedgoods, tobe suppliedacross thestate and even outside. “We arealso looking atmakingRagi nu-tritionbarswith localproduce,”hesaid.Traffickedwhen shewas 15,

Dantewadaafterhisbrother fellill.Afterdoingoddjobsforabouttwoyears,Vekwascontactedby

the district officials for the bak-ery. “When they said I had togoto Pune again, I was happy. Imissedmisal pav (a local dish),”he said. “Now, I know how tobakepav(bread)andIeatitwitheverything,”hesaid.In November last year, Vek

THE WILDLIFE corridor ofthe Aravallis in Gurgaon andFaridabadharboursaricher“vari-ety ofmammals” than theAsolaWildlife Sanctuary, despite nothaving asmuch protection, ac-cordingtoarecentstudy.Thefind-ing, its proponents say, indicatestheimportanceofpreservingthissectionofforestcoverinHaryana.Thestudy—a“systematicas-

sessment” of mammals in thewildlife corridor formed by theAravalli hills in Gurgaon andFaridabadwiththeAsolaWildlifeSanctuary in Delhi — has beencarriedoutbySunilHarsana,are-searcher fromMangar village,with “inputs” fromecologist DrGhazala Shahabuddin and envi-ronmental analyst ChetanAgarwal. Dr Shahabuddin andAgarwal are also Senior Fellowsat the Centre for Ecology,Development and Research(CEDAR). interesting finding of the studywasthatincomparisontoAsola,the Haryana portion of theAravallis had more wildlifemovement — despite the factthatAsolaisawildlifesanctuaryandhasmore legalprotection.”This is stated in the study as

well: “Both Gurgaon andFaridabad Aravallis were foundto harbour extremely rich vari-ety of mammals, more so thanAsolaWLSwhichistheonlypartof this area having formal pro-tectionasawildlifesanctuary...”It states that this can be at-

tributedto“theattitudeof toler-ancetowildlife”amongstthelo-cal population, “general lowdensity of people”, and “subsis-tence agricultural practices”prevalent in the twodistricts.“Thestudyindicatedthat the

hotspotofwildlifeinthiscorridoris actually between DamdamaandMangar Bani, andwildlifemoves from there to AsolathroughtheAravalliinFaridabad.ThisindicatesthatAsolawillsur-viveaslongastheAravalliregionof Gurgaon and Faridabad sur-vives.Ifthisfinishes,Asolawillau-

tomatically finish as well. It is,hence, critical to protect this re-gion,”saidHarsana.The study reveals that 15

species of mammals wererecorded in the 200 sq kmareathat was covered, includingGurgaonAravallis,MangarBani,Faridabad Aravallis, and AsolaWildlifeSanctuary.Althoughthelargest number of species wasrecorded in Faridabad Aravallis(14), followed by GurgaonAravallis (11),Mangar Bani (10)andAsola(9),theencounterratesin Mangar Bani and GurgaonAravalliswere30%higher.Leopard species, the study

THE THREEmunicipal corpora-tions have given a list of 95,000frontline workers to the Delhigovernment to receive theCovid-19 vaccine, ahead of thecountry-wide immunisationdriveon January16.A senior SouthMCD official

said their listof 33,046workersincludes health workers, safaikaramcharis, teachers andcon-tractual staff engaged inCovid-related work. The official saidthat in the first phase, around10,000 health workers — doc-tors,nurses,hospitalstaff,para-medical staff, ward boys, tech-nicians, lab assistants —wouldget the shot followed by otherfrontline staff.The NorthMCDhas given a

list of 37,952 workers whileEast has given a list of 24,442workers.Therearearound30,000san-

itationworkersemployedbytheNorthbody, 14,000byEast, and20,000bySouth.Thenumberofcontractual and permanentteachersinthreeMCDsis18,000.Teachers had played an impor-
