The generalized use of capacitors for power factor cor-rection has nowadays an increasing interest due to the succesive energy price rises specially felt during the last years. There has also been a change in the suppliers price policy overcharging the consumption of reactive power.

BIANCHI has made these changes with the experience of our Development and Design team which developes our own advanced technology.

Therefore we can offer our Second Generation of ca-pacitors for power factor correction, in the metallized polypropylene type MKP-EC described in this brochure.

This range offers important innovations, both in the in-side and in the form. Its main advantages are:

– Remarkable reduction in condenser size, keeping the dry tightness design Trade mark.

– Expansion of the poweer range, that nowadays comes up to 100 kVAr.

– New automatic compensation equipment, more com-pact and powerfull.

P 500 cos ϕ 1

1. ACTIVE POWER REACTIVE POWER AND POWER FACTOR

The active power is the one that makes the work useful of a machine, equipment, motor, transformers, solder equipments, fluo-rescent lamp, etc.

The reactive power is the one that produces a magnetic field, it is necessary for the work of the equipment. This reactive power circulate alternative from the receptor to the generator and don’t produce any work for itself.

The total power is the geometric sum of reactive and active powers.

The power factor (cos ϕ) is the relation between the active power and the apparent.

The same happen for currents. In fig. 1a and 1b, vectorial diagrams, can be seen as:The active power P measure in KW.The reactive power Q measure in KVAr.The apparent power S measure in KVA.

2. WHY TO CORRECT THE POWER FACTOR?

The presence of the total reactive current increase producing voltage drops and energy dissipation result and the most signifi-cant effect is the wrongly use of the installation.

For example:An installation with an active power P = 500 Kw and a factor

power cos ϕ= 0.5.The minimun in such installations of transformer power is:

P 500 cos ϕ 0,5

If we had a power factor cos ϕ = 1, a transformer should be enough for half power.

Surcharges and allowances (only for Spain)

Electricity suplliers apply on the invoice the percentage value Kr (%) adds the power and energy, wich is the function of power factor.

Power factor and Kr (%) value, is calculated as shown bellow:

Wr Wa

Wa Wa2 + Wr

2

Kr(%) = 17 tg2ϕ - 4 = - 21

Wa (KWh) and Wr ( KVArh) are the active and reactive energy registrated for the meter in the same period of time.

The table 1 demostrates values calculated with the previous formula.

Observe that for power factor (cos ϕ) less than 0.9 there is a surchage and values higher than 0.9 the formula gives a negative value, in fact it is an allowances. Don´t apply surchages up to 47% neither allowances up to 4%.

QC = Q1 – Q2 = Ptg ϕ1 – Ptg ϕ2 = P (tg ϕ1 – tg ϕ2) = P x f

3. CORRECTION OF THE POWER FACTOR WITH CAPACITORS ASSISTANCE

In fig. 2a, the line represents the supply of a section of motors and the sistem used for connections are capacitors to improve the power factor.

The capacitor works as a generator of reactive power and sup-ply enough reactive current for the establishment from magnetic fields of the motors. In this case cos ϕ = 1, capacitors supply all the need it reactive current for motors Ir meanwhile the net work supply just active component Ia. In fig. 2b demostrate the vector currents diagram.

4. CALCULATION OF CAPACITORS POWER

In figs. 3a and 3b show the diagram power of an installation with a power factor cos ϕ1, corresponding the reactive power Q1 and the conditions of improving that we want to obtain, so a cos ϕ2 larger, reducing the reactive power Q2 with assistance of ca-pacitors.

The capacitor power will be:

QC = Q1 – Q2 = Ptg ϕ1 – Ptg ϕ2 = P (tg ϕ1 – tg ϕ2) = P x f

Facilinting the calculation, the values of f are in table 2.

Next we demostrate many ways of getting the active power P and the cos ϕ1 needed for the calculation of capacitors power.

EXAMPLE: P = 200 KW; cos ϕ1 = 0.7To elevate cos ϕ2 = 0.95 then we get f = 0.69The reactive power need it for the capacitor will be:Qc = P x f = 200 x 0.69 = 138 KVar

EJEMPLO: P = 200 KW; cos ϕ1 = 0,7Para elevar a cos ϕ2 = 0,95 obtenemos f = 0,69La potencia reactiva necesaria del condensador será Qc = P x f = 200 x 0,69 = 138 KVar

5. MÉTODOS DE COMPENSACIÓN DE LA POTENCIA REACTIVA

5. METHODS OF REACTIVE POWER COMPENSATION

5.1. Individual compensation

Every inductive machine is installated with a capacitor in par-allel. It is the most correct proceding. The whole lines stay dis-charged of the reactive power. But the prociding is more expensive, because it is necessary many capacitors of small power wich price

Qc = 0,9 3 V Io; Ic = 0,9 Io

for KVAr is more elevated. Also during stop periods, capacitors remain inactive, not using them as a good produced.

In direct connection with a motor terminal. The capacitor power shouldn´t be higher to the no load reactive power. However in the disconnection, if the motor continue rotating, the discharge of the capacitor over the motor can origine self excitation passing to work as asynchronous generator, it could appear dangerous volt-age, as in the motor or in the capacitor.

The limite of the capacitor power is the 90% of no load reac-tive power. If has been taken no load current motor Io as magnet-ized, then the reactive power of the capacitor will be:

Qc = 0,9 3 V Io; Ic = 0,9 Io

If it is unknown Io it can make rotate the no load motor and measure Io.

In table 3 values of reactive power of capacitors Qc are given for the compensation of asynchronous motors.

7) (apt. 6.2 – Proceso de desconexión).

e) Conexión a motores con arranque estrella triángulo. Existen diferencias alternativas de conexión del condensador.

RECOMENDATIONS FOR THE CONNECTION OF CAPACITORS

a) Putting straith over the terminal motors. If the motor has protection of overload (thermic relay). This should readjust after the connection of the capacitor because the current decrease (fig. 4).

b) Before the thermic protection of the motor. In this case there isn´t any modification to adjust the thermic relay (fig. 5).

c) Connection with an independent contactor. The discharge of the capacitor is advisable to carry out with resistances of rapid discharge, trough auxiliary contacts from the contactor.

This way of connection is adviseble it is difficult to know the no load current motor or if you would like to carry out a compensa-tion for the large charge of the motor (fig. 6).

d) Connection to elevation of motors (lifts, cranes, funiculars, etc.). These motors are supplied with electromagnet brakes. If volt-age is applyed to the motor, the electromagnet get excited and the motor release brakes. To disconnect the motor, itself release brakes. To avoid motor excitation from the motor in its disconnection be-cause discharge of the capacitors over the motor and a mistake in the brakes, it is use an independent contactor for the connection of the capacitor like resistance of rapid discharge, because these equipment can work with connections and disconnections very of-ten (fig. 7) (apt. 6.2 - disconnection process)

e) Connection to motors with star delta starting. There are differents alternatives of capacitor connection:

1. A terminal U V W motor. This system has the inconvinience that the current from thermic relay stay altered.

2. A terminal X Y Z motor. In this system during the pass of star delta could excited and produce elevated peak currents in capacitors.

In both cases 1 and 2, there is danger in case that connections and disconnections are very frequent (point 6.2 - disconnection processing).

The reasons always exposed, advise the use of an independent contactor for the capacitor, with resistances of rapid discharge (fig. 8).

5.2. Groups compensation

It is advisable when there are groups of charges that connects itself simultaneously demanding a constant reactive power, (a group of lamps of discharge). Also can be a solution when groups of charges are situated in different places. To compensate sepa-rated groups can discharge different lines of distribution (fig. 9).

5.3 Centralized compensation. Automatic regulation

This kind of compensation gives the most economic resolution and is the most generalized. The total capacitors power is instal-lated in the connection, near the switchboard panel and is divided in a number of steps. Automatic regulator of reactive energy con-nect and disconnect steps until obtain the cos ϕ prearranged in the regulator.

However it has the disadvantage that don´t discharge the lineas of distribution (fig. 10).

5.4. Transformers compensation

Capacitors power are calculated to compensate the reactive power absorbed from the no load transformer, that is 5-10 % of the nominal. The capacitors connection is secondary realized.

To avoid resonance phenomenons and no load overvoltege the capacitors power shouldn´t exceed the 10% of the nominal ca-pacitors power. As can be seen from table 4 and given values for the compensation of reactive power of transformers.

6. INSTALLATION PROBLEMS

6.1. Connection process

At the moment of the connection produces a transitory phenom-enon, producing high peak currents that can affect to the internal connection of capacitors as others equipment handling. This effect is very important when there are capacitors of low voltage and itself connected to a new capacitor of battery.

Vc - Vn V Qc

Vn Vn Scc

Vn – Tensión de salida sin condensador.Vc – Tensión de salida con condensador.Qc – Potencia del condensador.Scc – Potencia de cortocircuito del transformador.

6.2. Disconnection process

Discharging the capacitors after its diconnection of the net-work, its incorporate resistance of discharge that internacional rules should guarantee a residual tension lower than a 50 V in a minute. In some cases, this time can be too long, then it use rapid discharge ressistances, they are connected through an auxiliary contacts from the contactor.

This can be, among others, the case of automatic installation of power factor connection, where the time of reconnection can be lower than 1 minute. If in the moment that is reconnected again its resudial rension is in opposite phase with the network, also produced an elevated current crest that damage the capacitor and the contactor (possible contacts solder).

Although it has internal discharge resistance, before manipula-tion of a capacitor, you should wait more than 1 minute and is convinient to short circuit theirs terminals for safety measures.

6.3. High voltage in the transformer

As it was exposed in the point 5.4, the connection of a second-ary capacitors of a transformer increase voltage in his way out. This phenomenon is more notable no load or with very few charge of the transformer. If the power of the capacitor is lower than 10% of the transformer power, the overvoltage is worthless. The overvoltage no load can be calculate with enough exactitude by the following formula:

Vc - Vn V Qc

Vn Vn Scc

Vn – Outlet voltage without capacitorVc – Outlet voltage with capacitorQc – Capacitors powerScc – Short circuit power of the transformer

7. HARMONIC OVERLOAD

In general all the receivers or charges not linears absorb from the network currents not sinusoidal. A function not sinusoidal can descompose in a series of frequency sinusoidal that has the basic frequency (for our case 50 Hz) and their harmonic (Multiple of 50 Hz).

Principal charges not linears that produce harmonic

Converters AC/DC, regulators of velocity for motors of continue current static converters of frequency, oven arc, dicharge lamps, arc solder, etc.

This harmonic currents solder produce reactances drops in the network, so harmonic tensions superpose, deforming the voltage in the terminal, afecting to the totality of the receptors generally in negative.

So in motors and transformers produce dissipations results in iron copper also in lineas.

In motors produce pairs pulsators and mecanic vibrations. Can alterate the function of the relay, energy meters, computers,

equipments of velocity regulation etc.

= =

Page 18: Con Dens Adores React Iva

17 BIANCHI

In capacitors can provoque its overload, as these are very sensitive to the harmonic, because its current is proportional to harmonic.

In general when a charge not lineal, mainly the rectifiers, are connected to an electric network, the voltage in its terminal stay distorted. The grade of distortion depend of the value of the har-monic generated for the charge and the network reeder.

The capacitors connection of compensation to improve the cos ϕ produce an alteration of independence of the network than should take into account in presence of harmonics.

As shown bellow:

1. Absence of the phenomenon of resonance parallel between the capacitor and the network for the existing harmonics. In this case in the capacitors it produces an overload voltage and current that generaly is not usually very high and if com-mon capacitors don’t serve, can produce reinforced capaci-tors for high tension and current.

2. If exist resonance or near any harmonic existing current can reach values higher to the nominal of the installation of anti-harmonic impact inductances to protect the capacitors.

In fig. 12 it represents an simplification installation of low ten-sion, where the converter works as a current source that injects harmonic to the network.

CAPACITORS MKP OF METALIZED POLYPROPYLENE FOR CORRECTION OF THE POWER FACTOR IN NETWORKS OF LOW VOLTAGE

CONDENSADORES MKP DE POLIPROPILENO METALIZADO PARA CORRECCIÓN DEL FACTOR DE POTENCIA EN REDES DE BAJA TENSIÓN

1. MKP CAPACITORS DESCRIPTION

As dielectric is used a polpropylene film. The metalizetion film realice no load for condensation of metallic steams over the sur-face of the film previously handled to the improve the adherence.

The film of metalized polypropylne is presented in two windigs situated correctly to proceed. It is used a special windig machine.

As result should obtain a compact windig and uniform with a minimun presence of residual air. The windigs are subjecter to a thermic treatment to stabilize the shrink capacity of the film and eject the air in its inferior.

It is used a zinc spray over the laterals of the windigs that must secure a reliable mechanic and elctric contact between thins metalized armature and the wire connection.

The quality of this contact will depend of the capacitors ca-pacity to resist high peak currents specially during the network connections.

Securing the cleanning of every place, the windigs are subjected to a voltage cycle continiuum and alternate.

The windigs proteged from air and dampness. The processing of manufacture must be elaborated carefully.

2. SELF HEALING

This characterist represent one of the largest advante of ca-pacitors.

The thickness cape of metalized polypropylene film is 0.003 m, but conventionals impregnated paper capacitors, the alu-minium foil is between 5 and 6 m. In case of perforation from the dielectric in a capacitor with foil as armature, this is efficient to maintain the pass of sudden current, supporting the short cir-cuit produced.

On the contrary, if the dielectric perforation is produced in a metalized polypropylene the arch energy is capable of evaporate the zone affected of metalized, re-establishing the installation between armatures.

This feature makes that a dielectric perforation, as consequenc-es of sudden overvoltage or any fault in the dielectric during the use of capacitors, do not provoque a mistake irreparable.

3. LOW LOSSES

MKP capacitors have losses from 7 to 10 times less than the ones impregnated.

Therefore in an aislated windig, losses are 0.2 W/kVAr, meanwhile altogether can be more than twice, depending of the connected. The low losses determine that the own heating of the capacitors will be imperceptible. This takes to a high thermic realiability, facilitating the construction of the capacitor as its installation.

VC-VN V QC

VN VN SCC

En donde:

VN = Tensión salida sin condensador

VC = Tensión salida con condensador

QC = Potencia del condensador

SCC = Potencia cortocircuito del transformador

APLICATIONThe capacitors MKP/EC-M are designed

for individual compensation of power trans-formers, and also on installations that not require automatic regulation.

Thereafter we provide a table of power transformers, with his needs of reactive power. For his individual compensation has been taken consumtion of reactive power without load.

We can admitt a capacitor power of about 5% of nominal transformer power. The over-tension on capacitor may be calculate with the help of the formula:

VC-VN V QC

VN VN SCC

In which:

VN = Output tension without capacitor.

VC = Output tension with capacitor.

QC = Capacitor power.

SCC = Short circuit power of transformer.

The capacitors BNC are desig-ned for individual compensation of motors or installations that not require automatic regulation. Their construction is ideal for individual compensation of motors. In this case we obtain the best compen-sation, and at the same time avoid overloading line.

escalón.– Contactores adaptados a cargas capaciti-

APLICATIONBIANCHI, S.L. in his long way as a ma-

nufacturer of capacitors has develop a spe-cial bank for reactive power compensation, in mains with high presence of harmonics.

In this banks the capacitors are asso-ciated with inductors to avoid possible re-sonance amplification for harmonics 5 and higher. Then achives a reduction of his level to values admitted by the specifications.

The banks BBF are composed:– Special regulator for mains with higs

presence of harmonics.– Fuses for high level of disconnection for

step.– Contactors for capacitive loads, with

quick discharge resistors.– Natural ventilation by the “cage” system

of the cabinet.– Three-fase inductors for 189 Hz reso-

nance frequency.
