"How many" y "how much" en inglés

Tanto how much como how many se usan para preguntar por cantidades, pero ¿cuándo se usa cada uno? Veámoslo.

La teoría

Un sustantivo contable es cualquier cosa que se puede contar en unidades separadas: edificios, coches, lunares, botellas, lápices, niños, etc. Con ellos usamos how many: How many cars are there in your garage?

Los sustantivos incontables son los que no podemos contar en unidades individuales: el agua, el aire, la luz, la nieve, la lluvia, el hierro, etc. Con ellos usamos how much: How much water is there in that glass?




La práctica

Vamos a ver primero cómo usamos la estructura How many… are there?:

¿Cuántos parques hay en esta ciudad? How many parks are there in this city?

¿Cuántos bancos hay en este pueblo? How many banks are there in this village?

¿Cuántos rascacielos hay en Madrid? How many skyscrapers are there in Madrid?

Ahora nos fijamos en la estructura How much… is there?.

¿Cuánto crimen hay en Nueva York? How much crime is there in New York?

¿Cuánta polución hay en China? How much pollution is there in China?

¿Cuánta luz solar hay en las Canarias? How much sunlight is there in the Canaries?

Por último, veamos algunos sustantivos que son contables en castellano, pero incontables en inglés:

¿Cuántas noticias hay sobre el nuevo plan?

How much news is there about the new plan?

¿Cuánta gente hay en tu familia? How many people are there in your family?

¿Cuantos consejos hay en la carta? How much advice is there in the letter?

Clave de pronunciación




Al decir how ten muchísimo cuidado de no pronunciar /jau/. En inglés, pronunciamos la h como si estuviéramos echando el aliento a un espejo para abrillantarlo. Piensa en esto mientras dices /hhhau/.

En resumen: GRAMMAR How much / How many

Se utilizan para preguntar por cantidades de algo.

Si se trata de sustantivos contables, se aplica How many. Si se trata de sustantivos incontables, se usa How much.

Estas expresiones siempre van seguidas de un sustantivo; luego, el verbo y el resto de la oración.

How many cars do you have? ¿Cuántos autos tienes?

How much money do you have? ¿Cuánto dinero tienes?

How much se utiliza también para preguntar precios.

How much is this car? ¿Cuánto cuesta este auto?

How much are the potatoes? ¿Cuánto cuestan las papas?

También se usan en forma genérica para preguntar "cuánto hay". En este caso, van seguidas del sustantivo y luego, is / are there.

How many cars are there? ¿Cuántos autos hay?

How much money is there? ¿Cuánto dinero hay?

A estas preguntas se responde usando There is / are, dependiendo de si se trata de singular o plural, como ya hemos visto en lecciones anteriores.




There are four cars. Hay cuatro autos.

There is one dollar. Hay un dólar.

Para hacer referencia a los sustantivos incontables, se pueden utilizar los envases o las medidas de los envases que los contienen, los cuales sí son contables...

How much milk is there? ¿Cuánta leche hay? There are three litres. Hay tres litros.

How much wine is there? ¿Cuánto vino hay?

There are two bottles. Hay dos botellas

Movie Review: Avatar

Avatar is a 2009 science fiction film directed by James Cameron. The movie takes place on a distant moon called Pandora, which orbits a large, gas planet. Humans move to the moon to extract a natural resource they call “unobtanium”. As humans begin to mine the planet, a native species fights against them. The humans attempt to learn more about the species by building a clone that can connect to the mind of an operator. The concept is similar to driving a car by remote control. Jake Sully, the person selected to run the avatar, however, becomes sympathetic to the alien beings living there and turns against the humans. The film earned praise from critics and audiences. Panda Bear

Panda is the name for two nocturnal Asian mammals: the red panda and the giant

panda. The red panda, also known as lesser panda and cat bear, is found at high

elevations in the Himalayas. It resembles a raccoon but has a longer body and tail

and a more rounded head. Its thick fur is rust color to deep chestnut, with black

on the under parts, limbs, and ears. The red panda spends much of its time in

trees but feeds on the ground, eating primarily bamboo leaves but also fruit and

roots. The giant panda superficially resembles a bear. The body is chiefly white,

and the limbs are brownish black, with the dark color extending up over the

shoulder. The ears and eye patches are black. Giant pandas live in restricted areas
