The San Luis Gonzaga School (created by a group of bourgeoisie parents from the area in an effort to make a grammar school governed by the Jesuits), began operating in this building in 1867.

However, their activities were interrupted for a while by the Jesuits temporary expulsion from the Compañía de Jesús, and they only began to steadily recover in 1962.

The property (which consists of a church and the remains and grounds of the old San Francisco convent) encompasses a large courtyard (which is part of the school). The building’s main fachade was completed in 1895. In addition to its architectural interest, the real importance and allure of the building lies in its function.

Between 1875 and 1924, many students passed through the doors of the school which was known as ‘El colegio de los jesuitas’ (The Jesuit’s School) of El Puerto; among these Juan Ramón Jiménez, Fernando Villalón, Rafael Alberti, Pedro Muñoz Seca, Juan Gavala, Juan Guilloto, and “Modesto”…, went on to be successful in the arts, humanities, sciences and various other professions.

It is possible to visit: The foyer, the auditorium and the library (currently the Municipal Historical Archives) which maintains its original furnishings, the Pedro Muñoz Seca exhibition: “El humor dentro y fuera del teatro” (Humour inside and outside of the theatre), and the Gallery which portrays all of the Jesuit’s School’s outstanding alumni.
