San Juan de la Cruz, (14 de diciembre) Nació de familia muy humilde en Toledo, España, en 1542. A la muerte de su padre, la familia quedó en la miseria. La mamá tra-bajaba en oficios domésticos en un convento. Juan entró a traba-jar como mandadero y enfermero del hospital, y así duró siete años. Al ser ordenado sacerdote en 1567, pidió a Dios como es-pecial regalo que lo conservara siempre en gracia y sin pecado y que pudiera sufrir con todo valor y con mucha paciencia toda cla-se de dolores, penas y enfermedades. Santa Teresa había fundado la comunidad de las Hermanas Car-melitas Descalzas y deseaba fundar también una comunidad de Padres Carmelitas que se dedicara a observar los reglamentos con la mayor exactitud posible. Y he aquí que al encontrarse los dos santos, descubrió Santa Teresa que este frailecito pequeñito, flaco y debilucho era el hombre indicado para empezar su nueva comu-nidad. En adelante la amistad entre santa Teresa y nuestro santo los hará crecer mucho en santidad y en ciencias religiosas a los dos. Con Fray Juan y con otros dos frailes fundó santa Teresa su nueva comunidad de Carmelitas descalzos y los envió a vivir a un convento muy pobre, llamado Duruelo. En 1571, santa Teresa lo eligió como director espiritual de ella y de las monjitas en su con-vento en Ávila, y escribió acerca de él: "Está obrando maravillas. El pueblo lo tiene por santo. Y es mi opinión que lo es y que lo ha sido siempre". Sus dirigidas espirituales hacían grandes progresos en santidad, al recibir sus consejos. Pero los que no aceptaban esa nueva fundación de Padres Carme-litas descalzos, dispusieron alejarlo para que la comunidad fraca-sara. Y una noche llegaron por sorpresa a su habitación y se lo llevaron preso a Toledo. Allá lo tuvieron encerrado durante nueve meses en la más inhumana de las prisiones. Una piezucha oscura, cuya única ventana era altísima; sin ropa para cambiarse, sin per-mitirle celebrar misa, con espantosos calores en verano y tremen-dos fríos en invierno. Más tarde cuando otros le pregunten de dónde ha sacado tanto valor para sufrir toda clase de males, res-ponderá: "Cuando estuve preso en Toledo aprendí a sufrir". El santo aprovechó aquellos meses de espantosa soledad e inacti-vidad para componer alguna de sus más famosas poesías que lo han hecho célebre en todo el mundo. (En una de ella dice a Dios: "A dónde te escondiste amado – y me dejaste con gemido – Como el siervo huiste – habiéndome herido – Salí tras de Ti clamando y ya eras ido"). Con un pequeño hierro fue aflojando por dentro las cerraduras de su prisión y luego rasgando sábanas y ropas, logró fabricarse un largo lazo para descolgarse hacia el precipicio por donde pasaba el tormentoso río. Amarró su cuerda, y sin que los guardianes se dieran cuenta, se descolgó por el muro. Al amanecer corrió donde las hermanas carmelitas. Ellas lo escondieron muy bien y por más que lo buscaron luego los enviados a apresarlo no lo encontraron. Dios le había concedido una cualidad especial: la de saber enseñar el método para llegar a la santidad. Escribio unos libros tan im-portantes que le han conseguido que el Sumo Pontífice lo haya declarado Doctor de la Iglesia. Algunos de sus libros más famo-sos son: "La subida del Monte Carmelo", y "La noche oscura del alma". Como poeta ha sido admirado por siglos a causa de la mu-sicalidad de sus poesías y de la belleza de sus versos. Es muy popular su "Cántico Espiritual". Todo lo soportaba en silencio con la más admirable paciencia. Después de tres meses de sufrimientos muy agudos, el santo mu-rió en año 1591. Apenas tenía 49 años.

Second Sunday of Advent - December 10, 2017

St John of the Cross (Dec 14)

Born in Toledo, Spain in 1542, John learned the importance

of self-sacrificing love from his parents. His father gave up

wealth, status, and comfort when he married a weaver's

daughter and was disowned by his noble family. After his

father’s death, his mother kept the destitute family together

as they wandered homeless in search of work.

At 14, John took a job caring for patients who suffered from

incurable diseases and madness. It was out of this poverty

and suffering that John learned to search for beauty and

happiness not in this world, but in God.

Ordained a priest of the Carmelite Order at 25 , John met

Teresa of Avila, and like her vowed himself to the primitive

Rule of the Carmelites. She asked him to help, her reform

movement. John supported her belief that the Carmelite

order should return to its life of prayer.

Soon after the beginning of St Teresa’s reform he was kid-

napped by opponents of the reform. No one had any idea

where he had gone and, as St Teresa lamented, nobody

seemed to care. He was locked up in a cell without light or

air during the stifling heat of a Toledo summer to await trial

and punishment for what his persecutors seriously believed

to be a canonical crime.

After 9 months, John escaped by climbing out a window

using a rope made of strips of blankets. He hid from pur-

suers in a convent infirmary where he read his poetry to the

nuns. From then on his life was devoted to sharing and ex-

plaining his experience of God’s love. Actually, he is now

considered the virtual founder of the discalced Carmelite

friars – the OCDs.

John has left us many books of practical advice on spiritual

growth and prayer that are just as relevant today as they

were then. These books include: Ascent of Mount Carmel,

Dark Night of the Soul and A Spiritual Canticle of the Soul

– to mention just a few.

No one can become a saint without solving the problem of

suffering and no one who has ever written anything, outside

the pages of Scripture, has given us so much solution to the

problem of suffering as St John of the Cross. It is no exag-

geration to say that of all the saints he is perhaps the great-

est poet as well as the greatest contemplative, and that in his

humility he was also most human.

A man of very small physical stature, John, as poet and

mystic is among the giants. Uniquely and strongly John

underlines the gospel paradox: the cross leads to resurrec-tion, agony to ecstasy, darkness to light, and denial of self

to union with God. If you want to save your life, you must

lose it (Lk 17,33) . John is truly ‘of the Cross’. He died at

the age of 49 - a life short, but full in the year1591 and was

canonized in 1726. He was declared Doctor of the church in

1926.
