THEPEARSONCHI-SQUARESTATISTIC

Karl Pearson devised such a test statistic ~ Pearson chi-square

It used to calculate a single test statistic

It will summarize the amount of difference between two

tables

If the frequencies all agreed with their expected values ~

this total (Pearson chi-square) would be 0 If there is a substantial difference between the observed

and expected counts ~ this value will be large

A common mistake is to use the value of X2

Used to measure the degree of association between the

two categorical variables

A measure of association gives a value to the

association between the row and column variables It is not dependent on the sample size or the size of the

table
