QUIÉNES SOMOSABOUT US

CARLOS MADRIDDIRECTOR

In this last stretch of 2017, we have as a backdrop the celebration in Madrid of the 70th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the Philippines and Spain. Those of you who are preparing for the upcoming DELE exams will have a chance to practice your Spanish in the many events planned in our cultural calendar. The remarkable exhibit El Prado en la calle will continue its itinerary in the historical heart of Manila, with the support of the Intramuros Administation.

Our commitment to reading and literature in all its forms brings us to one the biggest booksellers and publishers events of Manila, the International Book Fair. Do not miss the chance to visit our booth where we will have on display many recent publications, courtesy of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of Spain.

We are celebrating the success of Posporos, and welcoming a new edition of these series of concerts by Spanish and Filipino musicians, with the support of NCCA and various local entities. To all lovers of independent music and to the public in general, let’s all enjoy the talent of these bands!

Do not miss the great annual event that lets you watch movies in Spanish on the big screen. Pelikula returns just like every October with a very representative sample of the recent films in Spanish. This year we inaugurate the festival with the film 1898. Los últimos de Filipinas.

We also have reason to celebrate as another Spanish-speaking country, Colombia, has just opened its Embassy in Manila. Mabuhay ang Colombia!

See you at the Instituto Cervantes de Manila!

Don_Q is a devised work based on Spanish novelist Miguel de Cervantes “The History of the Valorous and Wittie Knight-Errant Don Quixote de la Mancha”. Originally performed at the PETA Theater Center (Manila, Philippines) in 2008, the show featured young artist-teachers of the PETA Metropolitan Teen Theater League (PETA-MTTL) moving and performing in an interactive playground. The performance is purely improvised and audience members are allowed to join the performance and interact with the characters. This re-imagining of Don Quixote follows the story of Dondon, a Filipino teenager from Manila and his digital adventures. With both his parents working abroad as Filipino overseas workers and being unable to make connections in his school, Dondon suffers isolation in the real world and chooses to immerse himself in the virtual world of the internet and online gaming. Dondon fancies himself a virtual knight in his alternate reality. His missions reveal to us stories of other young people who have also turned to the internet for escape, validation, and meaning. Beyond being a performance, Don_Q is an immersive and interactive event wherein audience also become collaborators for the show. This version of Don_Q will make use of modern technologies and forms that has embedded itself in contemporary culture and artistic practice.

Leading Spanish Artists Cristina Lucas and Fernando Sanchez Castillo will be artists in residence at Bellas Artes Projects for one month in Bagac, Bataan, tracing historical links between Spain and the Philippines and collaborating with Filipino artisans in the process. The artists are both interested in mechanisms of power. Their separate practices examine and probe principal political and economic structures, dissecting them to reveal the contradictions between official history, the real story, and the collective memory. Bellas Artes Projects is a non-profit foundation that is centred on supporting the production of contemporary artists, providing a space of experimentation and interdisciplinary collaboration with Filipino heritage building and craft techniques, largely through residencies.

ROLLING MANILA, STREET FOOD TROLLEY DESIGN

FECHAS DATES:November 13-26, 2017

LUGAR VENUE:Design Centre of the Philippines,Intramuros

The repertoire of creative local designs constitutes a unique cultural heritage. The street food trolleys in Intramuros area define an urban landscape with great impact in Manila´s public space. The Rolling Manila project aims to identify and visualize these objects, as well as to design strategies to enhance its value as material heritage. It will be developed in 4 phases, corresponding to four types of production processes. The first phase is based in the search and registration of street food trolleys that are currently working in Intramuros. Within that process and collaborating with the street vendors collective, the project develops design strategies that give value to this human network and fosters an inclusive tourism. Coordinated with this fieldwork research, the project proposes a collaborative prototyping phase in which we will design and physically improve some of these food trolleys in order to make them more attractive and effective. Results will be shown and celebrate in a public event. The last step of the project will provide a new city map: a Culinary Cartography of Intramuros.

A Spanish-Philippine cultural magazine on its eight year may not constitute a milestone in the world of publishing but indeed it is an achievement for a magazine that aspires to be a meeting ground for and a way of understanding the cultural exchange between the Philippines, Spain and the rest of the Spanish-speaking world. In that manner, our magazine Perro Berde presents its latest edition in which from a personal and unique perspective, several cultural advocates who participated in the activities organized in the past few months by the Embassy of Spain in the Philippines and the Instituto Cervantes de Manila as well as other invited writers will share their impressions on different projects and cultural events. We likewise take advantage of the 7th issue of Perro Berde to discuss the world of cultural publications and its impact on society.
