 The popular English and Communicative

Skills Course gives you the opportunity to

develop your language and communication

skills in a friendly, cosmopolitan

environment. You can start on any of the

dates below and take a course of 2, 4, 6 ,8,

Who is the English and Communicative

Skills course for?

You must be aged 18 or over to start the

course, and have an English level at or abovePre-Intermediate / CEFR B1 / IELTS 4.0.

What level is the course?

 This course is for students between Pre-

Intermediate and strong Upper-Intermediate

levels (CEFR B1 - B2).

What does the course cover?

 The main aim of the course is to help you

become a more confident communicator inEnglish. The classes build on your existing

language skills and focus on:

• Developing speaking and listening skills

• Building vocabulary

• Improving pronunciation

• Increasing grammatical accuracy

• Enhancing uency and condence

• Improving reading and writing skills

• Enabling independent learning

In addition, you can choose from a range of

special interest classes. These might include:

• British culture

• Language through literature

How is the course structured?

Classes run between 9am and 4pm with

a break for lunch and free afternoons onWednesdays and Fridays.

 The course involves:

• 15 hours of English classes in the

mornings

• 5 hours per week of Special Interest

classes in the afternoons

• Social programme (including two trips

and a range of evening activities eachweek)

Summer SocialProgramme 

 The International English Centre provides

a full and lively social programme every

summer. This offers opportunities to explore

the area, enjoy trips to places of interest,

make friends and further develop your

English skills in a friendly and informal

atmosphere.

We provide two trips every week. These giveyou a chance to get to know Aberystwyth

and its beautiful surroundings, enjoy

the stunning coastline and the nearby

mountains, and venture further afield to

vibrant Welsh and English cities. The Social

Programme activities vary from year to year,

but these pages show some of our typical

trips.

Full-day excursions each Saturday to

destinations such as:

Half-day local excursions each Wednesday,

such as:

• Boat trips to look for dolphins in

Cardigan Bay

• Visits to explore King Arthur’s Labyrinth

 There are evening activities to get involved

in too. From cinema trips, sports, and team

quizzes to international food evenings

and beach barbecues, we offer a varied

programme of activities to keep you

entertained. Because summers at the

International English Centre are so very

international, you’ll be meeting people

from all over the world and practising yourEnglish too.

Most Summer Social Programme activities

are included in your course fee. On occasion,

you may need to pay for theatre or cinema

tickets, or entrance fees to attractions. These

additional costs will not exceed a total of £50

over the 12 weeks of the Social Programme.

 Trinity Cert TESOL

 The Trinity CertTESOL (Certificate in Teaching

English to Speakers of Other Languages) is a

professional training course for people who

want to teach English as a foreign or second

language. The course is validated by Trinity

College London, and leads to a globally

recognised teaching qualification.

CertTESOL 1 23 June – 25 July 2014 £1,300

CertTESOL 2* 28 July – 29 Aug 2014 £1,300

* Monday 25th August is a public holiday in the

UK. There will be no classes on this day.

Who is Trinity CertTESOL for?  Trinity CertTESOL is designed for those with

little or no experience of teaching English.

Participants must:

• Have an appropriate level of English

language competence (IELTS 7.5 or above

for non-native speakers)

• Hold educational qualications suitable

for entry into higher education

• Be aged 18 or over

What level is the course?

 The course is Level 5 on the Qualifications

& Credit Framework (QCF). This level is

considered comparable in difficulty to the

second year of an undergraduate degree.

What does the course cover? 

 The course is intended to equip participants

with the basic skills and knowledge required

to take up a rst post in TESOL or TEFL

(Teaching English as a Foreign Language).

It gives an introduction to the theory andpractice of English teaching, and an insight

into the challenges facing the learner and the

role of the teacher. Classroom sessions focus

on Teaching Skills & Techniques, Approaches

& Methods and Language Awareness. In

addition, participants observe classes and

gain hands-on teaching practice.

How is the course structured?  The course involves a minimum of 130

timetabled hours. These will include at least  

100 hours of classroom input, 6 hours of

observed and assessed teaching practice and

8 hours of guided classroom observations.

What does the course fee include?

 The fee includes tuition in small classes

(maximum 14 students per course), materials,

the examination fee and use of the IEC’sallocated resources.

Free English

 This English language course is taught by

trainee English Language teachers who are

studying for the Trinity CertTESOL (Certificate

in Teaching English to Speakers of Other

Languages). Each lesson is supervised and

assessed by a highly-experienced teacher

trainer, who also provides guidance to the

trainees to help them prepare and deliver

relevant, useful and interesting classes.

Who is Free English for?

 The Free English Course is for students

who want to improve their communicative

English skills in an enjoyable and relaxed

setting. You must be aged 18 or over to start

the course, and have an English level at orabove Pre-Intermediate / CEFR B1 / IELTS 4.0.

What level is the course? 

 The course is for students between Pre-

Intermediate and Upper-Intermediate levels

(CEFR B1-B2).

What does the course cover? 

 The course aims to help you become a

more confident communicator in English.

 The teachers will design lessons based on

students’ language needs and abilities, and

the course will include:

• Listening, speaking, reading and writing

classes

• Vocabulary building

• Pronunciation practice and grammar

work 

• Fluency and conversation classes

How is the course structured? 

 The course consists of 15 hours tuition a

week, between 10am and 1pm. Typical class

sizes are 10-12 students, and maximum class

size will not exceed 16.

Afternoons, evenings and weekends are free

for you to explore the area and get involved

in the Summer Social Programme.

Do I have to pay for anything? 

You will have to pay for accommodation

and if you wish to join the Summer Social

Programme you will have to pay a small

transport fee (maximum £15) for each fulland half day excursion.

Summer Pre-sessional Courses

 The Summer Pre-sessional and Induction

courses provide an opportunity for you toimprove your English, enhance your studyskills and get to know the university beforebeginning your degree. The courses run forbetween 3, 6 and 12 weeks, and combineserious academic study with a lively socialprogramme. This means that, by the timeyour degree starts, you are not only ready tomeet the academic challenges of university

study, but you have also had an opportunityto make friends and explore the local area.

Who are the Pre-sessional Courses(PS12 and PS6) for?

 These courses are for students who havea conditional offer from AberystwythUniversity for an undergraduate or a

postgraduate degree, but have not metthe English requirement. Students with anunconditional offer are also welcome to join.

1. PS12 (12-week Pre-Sessional) is forstudents whose overall English score isno more than 1 IELTS* band below thelevel required for entry to their degree.

2. PS6 (6-week Pre-Sessional) is for studentswhose overall English score is no morethan ½ an IELTS* band below the levelrequired for entry to their degree.

*Other Secure English Language Tests are also

accepted for entry.

Who is the Induction Course (IC3) for?

IC3 is for you if you have an unconditionaloffer from Aberystwyth University, but

want to become familiar with British

academic culture and with the University

before beginning your degree. This three

week course allows you to find your feet

in Aberystwyth, brush up your English and

develop your study skills, so that you can

start your degree with confidence.

What do the Summer Pre-sessional and

Induction Courses Cover?

 These courses involve 20 classroom hours

per week as well as regular individual

tutorials.

 The main focus of the course is on

developing the academic skills you need

to succeed in your degree and to improve

your command of academic English. Theclassroom sessions involve intensive work

on the four language skills: writing, reading,

listening and speaking. You will have the

opportunity to experience live lectures and

to gain confidence in taking effective notes.

You will learn to deliver presentations and

gain experience in presenting ideas and

information to an audience in a professional

manner. You will develop strategiesfor searching for information, reading

effectively and efficiently, and recording

information. There will be a strong emphasis

on academic writing. By the end of the

course you will have learned to research and

write academic essays and reports, making

skilful use of sources to support your ideas,

and using an appropriate academic style.

What level are PS12, PS6 and IC3?

Students who successfully pass the PS12

and PS6 will have achieved a minimum

English level of CEFR B2. All students on IC3

will be at CEFR B2 or above at the start of

the course.Progressing to your Degree from PS12

and PS6

Students who pass PS12 or PS6 at the level

required by their academic department will

progress automatically to their degree at

Aberystwyth University.

Progressing to your Degree from IC3

Students will progress automatically to theirdegree.

What are the entry requirements for PS12

and PS6?

For both PS12 and PS6 you must:

• Be over 17 years old before the course

start date

• Have a conditional oer from

Aberystwyth University for anundergraduate or a postgraduate

degree

To enter PS12 you must:

• Have an overall English score no more

than 1 IELTS band* (or equivalent) below

the level required for entry to your degree.

 The minimum English language score for

entry onto this course is IELTS 5.0 (with noindividual score lower than IELTS 4.5).

*Students with an English level more than 1 IELTS

band (or equivalent) below that required for their

degree can take our Target Course and progress

from that to the PS12.

 The International English

Centre (IEC) at Aberystwyth

University has over 30 years’

development courses of

between 1 and 4 weeks’

duration. These courses are

for teachers or lecturers

who want to upgradetheir professional skills,

 The courses combine intensive classroom-

based learning with teaching practice and

observations of lectures and seminars, aswell as a lively social programme. The course

Masters courses during the academic year

study. Successful completion of one of

these courses guarantees a degree place at

Aberystwyth University.

International Foundation Programme  The International Foundation Programme

will provide you with the academic and

language skills needed for success as an

undergraduate, and a solid introduction to

your degree subject. The course runs for 30

weeks, with start dates in September and

January. There is also a 15-week Fast Track

option.

Aberystwyth Arts Centre

Our award winning Aberystwyth Arts

Centre, located on campus, is one of the

most important arts centres in Wales and

somewhere you are sure to enjoy. It houses a

concert hall, theatre and modern cinema, livemusic venue, and several exhibition spaces.

 The bookshop and craft shop are popular

with students, and the bar and café serve

great food.

 There is a busy programme of performances,

exhibitions, courses and workshops

each year, covering the full range of art

forms. Whether you want to participate

and perform or watch and listen, there’s

something on oer for everyone. It’s a lively

and exciting place to be and a great place to

relax with friends.

The Sports Centre

 The University’s on-campus Sports Centre

offers facilities for indoor and outdoor sport

Accommodation for English and

Communicative Skills, Trinity CertTESOL

and Free English Courses 

Accommodation in University Residences is

available for the duration of your course at

a cost of £100 per week. Your room will be

available from 3pm on the Saturday before

the course starts until 10am on the Saturday

after your course finishes.

Your accommodation will be a single roomin a self-catered University Residence.

Residences are ats or individual houses,

each accommodating between 5 and 10

people who share bathroom facilities and

kitchen/diners. You may choose to cook your

own meals or eat at one of the University’s

restaurants and cafés.

What else is included in the summer

accommodation fee?

• Network connection – all rooms have a

hard-wired network connection and most

residences also have Wi-Fi.

• Personal Support – IEC Halls Ocers

live in the University Residences to offer

support as required. You can talk to them

about any issue connected to university

life; they are there to make your time with

us both happy and successful.

• Bedding and a laundry service for

bedding.

• Kitchen equipment.

• Heating and lighting costs.

• Insurance - the block-cover policy

protects some of your items against theft,

re, ood and accidental damage with

unlimited student cover.

What is not included in the summeraccommodation fee?

If you are taking a Pre-Sessional or Induction

Course, accommodation in University

Residences is available for the duration of

the course. This will be refunded when you

leave your University Residence, provided

that you have not caused any damage. You

must also complete your Accommodation

Licence Pack on the rst day of the

course. This is a contractual documentwhich outlines fees and your rights and

responsibilities when living in a University

Residence.
