Mary and the brothers of Jesus

He aquí algunas observaciones al

respecto.

La palabra Hermano en la Biblia

Page 6: Brother's in christ

The Biblical expression brothers of Jesus” gives the enemies of Mary and

the Catholic Church a strong plateful of arguments. Here are some other

observations on the theme.

The word BROTHER in the Bible

Page 7: Brother's in christ

San Pablo llama hermanos suyos

a Tito y Epafrodito.

Mt 5,23

1. Hebrew Language Brother (Ah ahot) in Hebrew and Aramaic, has a wide semantic range of meaning. Brother can refer to any male relative from whom you are not descended such as nephew, brother-in-law etc. > Brother can indicate close tribal ties among friends, allies, and the next of kin in a village. For example: Abraham’s uncle, Lot, claims the two are brothers, Gen 11:27-13-8. > St. Paul calls Titus in 2 Cor 2:13 and Epaphroditus in Phil 2:25 his bothers. > Jesus tells us to not go before the altar if we have not reconciled with our brother, our neighbor, Mt 5:23.

Lc 2,41.

Page 12: Brother's in christ

2. Jesus Son of Mary Mary, Mother of Jesus

When we speak of the Nazarene family we always refer to Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Not

once has there been any mention of any other brothers.

Also, remember that Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem once a year

for the Passover Feast. Lk 2:41.

Page 13: Brother's in christ

Lc 2,44

Hijo ¿Por qué te has portado así? Lc 2, 48

Lc 2,51

Las bodas de Caná. Jn 2,1

Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends.

Lk 2:44.

Son, why have you done this to us? Lk 2:48

His mother meanwhile kept all these things in memory. Lk 2:51.

Site the wedding at Caná. Jn 2:1.

Mc 6,3

Page 16: Brother's in christ

3.- The four brothers of Jesus.

“Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary

and brother of James and Joses (Joseph) and Judea and Simon, and are not his sisters here (live) with us?”

Mk 6:3

Page 17: Brother's in christ

Jn 19,25

Page 18: Brother's in christ

James and Joseph

Many women were also there, looking on from a distance . . . among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and the mother of the sons of Zebedee, Mt 27:56.Mt 10:1-4 makes it clear that the son’s of Zebedee are

James, the Elder and John; now James, the Younger and Joseph are the sons of Alfeos (Cleophas). So, their

mother Mary cannot be Mary, the mother of Jesus but another Mary.

Meanwhile, standing near the Cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of

Clopas and Mary Magdalene, Jn:19,25.

Page 20: Brother's in christ

Simon and JudasWhen mentioned, the first and last name of their fathers are included in all the Biblical sites. No where in the Bible will it say of Joseph, husband of Mary, the Mother of God, Jesus son of Joseph, Mt 10:1-4; Mk 3:13-19 and Lk 6:13-16.

Always cited: James Thaddeus brother of James and Simon the Cananean and Judas called the Zealot, Mt 10:1-4.

Page 21: Brother's in christ

Jn 19,25-27

Page 22: Brother's in christ

It is important to recognize how the Apostles “James the Younger and Judas Thaddeus,

relatives among them, are considered servants of Jesus.

James 1:1 and Jude 1:1. > If they had been biological brothers of Jesus surely there would have been some reference

made to this. > Consequently, if Jesus had siblings

why did Jesus, before he died, hand-over his mother to John, a stranger?

Jn 19:25-27

Page 23: Brother's in christ

Mt 12,46

Page 24: Brother's in christ

4. “Those who do the will of the Father.”

The following biblical citation has been much utilized by many groups of separated

brothers to reduce the important role of Mary.

“He was still addressing the crowds when his mother and his brothers appeared outside to speak with him. Someone said to him, ‘Your mother and your brothers are standing out

there and they wish to speak to you.’” Mt 12:46.

Page 25: Brother's in christ

Mt 12,46-50

Declaration

“He said to the one who had told him, “Who is my mother? Then extending his hand toward his disciples, he said, “There are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is brother and sister and mother to me.” Mt 12: 46
