P ’ C LORD,TEACHUSTOPRAY(40).Prior to my ordi-nation as a deacon I was given the opportunity to make an 8-day Ignatian Retreat. During my last se-mester in Berkeley, I had participated in a ‘journaling workshop,’ I learned a technique that would help me listen to God in prayer. The technique was to con ide my needs and fears to God, appealing for his counsel. Then, to ‘give God a voice’ and write down in my journal what he seemed to be telling me. I should not presume that everything I write down is directly from God. But, at least, I would have something to test and discern in accord with Jesus’ promise, “The one who asks, receives.” What follows are excerpts from the journal I kept in those days. During the eight retreat days I met six times with a Jesuit priest at the Church of Jesu, not far from St. Peter’s Basilica. In the irst conference, Fr. Dullea asked me to focus on the blind man, Bartimaeus, saying, “Lord, I want to see,” and on Psalm 16, “You are my God. You alone are my joy,” and to hear Jesus ask me, “What would you like me to do for you?” Fr. Dullea advised me to make this a real desert experience, cut off from my everyday concerns and problems. I began an eight day fast on water, instant soup, and an occasional glass of orange juice. The fast helped me to focus on the presence of God and ‘hear’ his Word. IamsittingonthebanksoftheTibernow.It’sbeenabeautifulmorningwithcloudsandsunshineandpray-er.IcansenseJesus’question,‘Whatwouldyoulikemetodoforyou?’Iresponded,“Lord,givemeyourSpirit,keepmewrapped in your presence and conscious ofyour love.Yet Iknow youhavedone this – youhavemadeyourselfvulnerable tomyneglectbyyourdailypresence tomeunder theappearanceofbread in theEucharist.AndIknowthatyouarepresenttomeatalltimesand indiversewaysthroughyourSpirit.Lord,Ihaveneglectedyou.Ihavebeenblind,fearful,indiffer-entandweak–angryandguilty,apartfromyou.StirupinmeaburningthirstandanencompassinghungerforyourpresencethatImightnotbecutofffromyouagain–thatmythirstforyoumayhelpmetokeepmyeyes ixedonyou.My life is inyourhands. ‘AllIask isyourgraceandyourlove;that’senoughforme’.IstolethelastpartofmyprayerfromSt.Ignatius,thefound-eroftheJesuits.” (More to come).

R P SEÑOR,ENSEÑANOSAORAR(40). Antes de mi or-denacion como diacono se me dio la oportunidad de hacer un Retiro Ignaciano de 8 dıas. Durante mi ulti-mo semestre en Berkeley, habıa participado en un “taller de diario”, aprendı una tecnica que me ayuda-rıa a escuchar a Dios en oracion. La tecnica consistıa en con iar mis necesidades y temores a Dios, Pidiendo su consejo. Luego, “darle una voz a Dios” y escribir en mi diario lo que parecıa estar diciendome. No deberıa suponer que todo lo que escribo es directamente de Dios. Pero, al menos, tendrıa algo que probar y dis-cernir de acuerdo con la promesa de Jesus: “El que pide, recibe”. Lo que sigue son extractos del diario que escribı en esos dıas. Durante los ocho dıas de re-tiro me reunı seis veces con un sacerdote Jesuit en la Iglesia de Jesu, no lejos de la Basılica de San Pedro. En la primera conferencia, el Padre Dullea me pidio que me concentrara en el ciego Bartimaeus diciendo: “Senor, quiero ver”, y en el Salmo 16, “Tu eres mi Dios. Tu solo eres mi gozo, y escuchar a Jesus preguntarme: “¿Que te gustarıa que hiciera por ti?” Padre Dullea me aconsejo que hiciera de esta una verdadera experien-cia en el desierto, separada de mis preocupaciones y problemas cotidianos. Comence un ayuno de ocho dıas con agua, sopa instantanea y, ocasionalmente, un vaso de jugo de naranja. El ayuno me ayudo a concen-trarme en la presencia de Dios y “escuchar” su Pala-bra.
