    Festival y Campeonatos

    Del 14 al 25de agostose realizaruna nuevaedicin delTango Bue-nos Aires Festival (nmero 15) con una grancantidad de actividades que incluyen: concier-tos, recitales, actuacin de artistas consagradosy emergentes del gnero, clases, seminarios,conferencias, etc.

    Del 19 al 27 se llevar a cabo el Mundial deBaile (11 edicin), la fiesta que convierte aBuenos Aires en la meca para los bailarines detodo el mundo y consagrar los mejores bai-larines en las categoras Tango de Pista (exTango Saln) y Tango Escenario. Habr ron-das Clasificatorias y Semifinales en el Centro deExposiciones y las Finales en el Luna Park.

    En cada categora habr una pareja ganadora

    que recibir un premio de $ 40.000. Tambin seotorgarn premios y menciones especiales paralos segundos y terceros puestos. Todos los con-cursantes recibirn un certificado por su parti-cipacin en el campeonato.

    Organiza el Ministerio de Cultura del Gobier-no de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, que tambindesigna los jurados, a travs de la Direccin deFestivales. Asesoran para integrar los jurados laAsociacin de Maestros, Bailarines y Coregra-fos de Tango Argentino y la Cmara de Casas deTango y Msica Popular Argentina. En estaedicin no participa la Asociacin de Organi-

    Festival y Campeonato Mundial de Baile

    zadores de Milongas (ver Carta del Editor enpg. 6).

    Las entradas para las actividades programa-das en el CCC Teatro 25 de Mayo se podrn reti-rar el mismo da del espectculo en el Punto deInformes del teatro, a partir de las 17 hs. delda de la funcin.

    11 Campeonato de Baile de la Ciudad 2013El domingo 26 de mayo fue la Final de este

    Campeonato. Tuvo lugar en la Usina del Arte.Fue una reunin excepcional, con gran nivel decompetidores y emocin del pblico presente.

    Se consagraron triples campeones -en lascategoras Vals, Milonga y Tango Adulto-Fernando Carrasco y Jimena Hoffner (entre-vistados en esta edicin). En Milonguerosdel mundo, la pareja Edwin Enrique Espinosa

    y Jeniffer Yepes y, en la categora TangoSenior, Luis Anchava y Marta Doctorovich

    Los ganadores en Tango Adulto y Seniorrepresentarn a la Ciudad de Buenos Aires en laFinal del Mundial de Baile que comentamos msarriba. Los que finalizaron entre el 2 y el 5puesto en estas dos categoras y los campeo-nes de Milongueros del Mundo, accedern a lassemifinales de ese mismo Campeonato Mundial.

    Homenaje

    Pedro Norberto Guichenduc.El 3 de abril. Bailarn y maestro.En 1957 egres de la EscuelaNacional de Danzas y finalizsus estudios en el Teatro Coln.Integr conjuntos de baile en

    Espaa y Francia. En 1981 asu-mi como director de la Escuela

    Municipal de Danzas Jos Neglia. Fue nombra-do maestro interno del Teatro Coln. Al aosiguiente director del Ballet Folklrico del TeatroGeneral San Martn. En 1990 fue convocadopor Santiago Ayala El Chcaro y Norma Violacomo maestro, seleccionador y evaluador delBallet Folklrico Nacional. Tambin, en los 90actu con Juan Carlos Copes en el espectculo LaPesada del Tango. Dirigi escuelas municipalesde danza en localidades del Gran Buenos Aires.Actu como jurado en diversos certmenes.

    Guillermo Rico. El 18 demayo. A los 93 aos. Actory cantante. Form parte,como cantor, de la orquestade Mario Pugliese Cario

    en 1937. Ingres en 1938 alprograma radial humorsticoLa Caravana del Buen Humor, que diriga TitoMartnez del Box, cantando y haciendo imita-ciones de otros cantantes. En 1945/46 formparte de la orquesta de Francisco Canaro con elnombre de Guillermo Coral. En 1948 integr elconjunto Los Cinco Grandes del Buen Humor.Actu en teatro, cine y televisin. Dej graba-ciones. En 1999 recibi el Premio Podest a latrayectoria otorgado por el Senado de la Naciny la Asociacin Argentina de Actores.

    El 8 de junio pasadose rindi homenaje alinvestigador, escritory periodista Gaspar JosAstarita. Fue en la ciudadde Chivilcoy (provinciade Buenos Aires), donde

    naci y vivi, con motivode cumplirse diez aos desu fallecimiento.

    Gaspar Astarita, rea-liz un valioso aporte alconocimiento y la difu-sin de la cultura tanguera. Hizo profundasinvestigaciones sobre todo de creadores en lamsica, fruto de las cuales fueron los librosArgentino Galvn (1977, con segunda edicinampliada en 2002 y tercera en 2013), Pas-cual Contursi. Vida y obra (1981), Piazzoladel 46 (1987), Estos fueyes tambin tienensu historia (1987), Prontuario de una esquina(Cuentos) (1991), Retablo chivilcoyano (1993),

    Desde el saln de baile al escenario

    Para hacer un buen espectculo de humor con lamilonga y sus personajes hay que haber vivido yobservado durante mucho tiempo ese mbito. YRamiro Gigliotti, autor y director, hace muchosaos que est all.

    Esta obra es una sucesin de cuadros original-mente, cuentos unidos por el saln de baile.Entorno que oficia de revelador de los seres huma-nos. Los concurrentes cada uno de ellos distintoen su individualidad cumplen cdigos y rituales,repiten y manifiestan sentimientos, que no hacen

    sino subrayar lo que los hace reconocibles.

    As, van apareciendo los varones que enhebranun dilogo donde el tema nico son las mujeres;el veterano cargoso que no deja salir a bailar aljoven atrapado por una charla que no le interesa;aquel que sufre el amor ya acabado, y comienzasu monlogo con mucho odio para terminar reco-nociendo un afecto que permanece; la mujer quecuenta sus desventuras sentimentales; y as deseguido. Una serie de historias que se renovaronen este ao 2013.

    La interpretacin, que casi no parece tal, sinouna traslacin desde el saln al escenario, lahacen habituales concurrentes a los bailes. Pero,

    hay que destacar una labor de actuacin y dedireccin que lo transforma en un espectculorecomendable.

    La muerte es un trmino a partir de la cual ya nose podrn concretar los proyectos que se tienen.En esta obra Homero Manzi toma conciencia desu prximo fin y hace un racconto de momentosrelevantes de su existencia para encontrarse con lohumano.

    Dnde vas carrerito del Once? es la pregunta-cancin que surge en ese momento. A partir de allson escenas dialogadas y cantadas las que enlazan

    sus concepciones y su actividad poltica, su vidasentimental y, fundamentalmente, su relacin conla cancionista Nelly Omar.

    En el texto no faltan los reclamos que tienen vigen-cia actual, como el de que la cultura popular tieneque ser una poltica de Estado. Y un monlogo consu hijo Acho donde vuelca su experiencia y aconseja.

    Hay una actuacin impecable de los artistas, y JorgeSurez y Julia Calvo le dan al canto un brillo y unaexpresividad que refuerzan la historia. Nstor Canigliainterpreta con solvencia a los distintos interlocutorescon los que dialogan los personajes principales.

    Los autores arman un espectculo excepcional,con muy buen gusto en la seleccin de los temas,de los actores y de los msicos que comparten elescenario, ms los tcnicos fuera de l.

    Good news! Were read! Were paidattention to! For you to understandwhat Im talking about, I have to referback to the Editors Letter in issue N 212.There, I told you that the officials in the citygovernment who are in charge of organizing theWorld Championships had noted our remarksregarding different aspects of the competitionsand have implemented the modifications that Ilobbied for.

    I concluded saying: We still need to cre-ate a Code of Ethics or include new sections inthe regulations, so jury members may excusethemselves in case there are students, familymembers and/or friends participating in thecompetition.

    Therefore in the 2013 Championship, a newregulation related to what we had requested has

    been added to the Rules.

    The following is the literal transcription ofthe new rule regarding Jury selection: Any jurymember who may have had a work or personalrelationship or who has been the teacher of anyof the participants of the Championship for aperiod of at least 6 months close to the begin-ning of the competition, shall refrain from scor-ing such participants. For this purpose, both thevoluntary statements of the jury members andthe information provided by participants whenenrolling will be taken into account. In thesecases, the organization may opt for appointinga substitute jury member or getting the couples

    final scoreby dividing the amount of pointsreceived by the number of jury members whohave actually voted.

    In my opinion, the city officials in chargesince 2007 undid almost everything that hadbeen achieved by the previous political admin-istrations, or they changed names to concealrelations or continuity. Some of these changesinvolved events and others with the media relat-ed to tango the Web site Tangodata, among

    them; in addition to replacing the officials andemployees who worked in these specific areas.

    The result was that a great deal of experiencewas lost and the newly public officials had to startlearning everything from the beginning relatedto their jobs and the organization. Now finallythings are improving again year after year.

    However there is a concern that in thefuture, along with political changes in the citygovernment, these circumstances will likelyreoccur.

    The Milonga Organizers Association (MOA)neither cooperates nor participates in the 2013Tango Buenos Aires Festival and World Cup.After having held meetings with public officials,the Organizers Association concluded that

    they could not reach an agreement on severalsignificant items, among them: that the MOAshould be in charge of the organization of themilongas and that the Usina del Arte shouldnot be used for milongas, since these dances arenot usually held in that place; that they shouldhave the right to choose a number of jurors andnot just submit a list of eligible candidates; andthat the address, days and times of the milongasshould appear in the program published forthese events.

    he search warrant for the home of the Tapiafamily and Alans death all happened very

    fast.In a few seconds, Corporal Rodrigo AlejandroValente, who acted as a brechero(1), broke into theplace, walked directly to the room in the back, andkicked the door open which was not locked.

    He says that he gave the order of hands up!, butwith the light of the flashlight he carried, he sawthat Alan that had been sleeping was getting up andthreatened him with a gun.

    And he then shot before Alan had finished getting up.

    Totally unbelievable. According to the murderersstory, it is as if Alan had been sleeping holding the

    handmade gun like a teddy bear, waiting for anattack, and when he heard the noise, he got up withit in his right hand.

    It would have been more natural that the handmadegun had been beside him, say, on the table, and hehad made a movement to his side to get it.

    According to the story told by the police officer,everything lasted a few seconds and Alan would nothave time to do it.

    The entire account is told in a very calm, convinc-ing tone, with no aggressive behaviors, with linealthought, as Dr. Eduardo Piaggio, psychiatrist, stateswhen asked about the personality features of the

    police officer.

    The murderer may be convinced of having acted inthe right way, but the story about the threat seemsto be made up and repeated until he learned it byheart, we think.

    In the Hearing RoomThe courts are not an exciting place. After watch-ing similar scenes on TV and in the movies, wherethe actors have clever phrases and sharp comments,these real oral and public hearings where the wit-nesses and experts give their testimony are some-times tedious.

    The shadows before the dawnThe search took place on February 15, 2012, a littlebefore 6 am.

    The defendant mentions the darkness of the roomwhere Alan was; and the emergency service doc-tor who arrived forty minutes after the situationaccording to Alans mother talks about the shad-ows of dawn.

    Four hours. She got out of the cab withher keys to the building in hand, tryingto save some seconds in those short fourhours that she had to remove her milonguera

    skin, have a shower, sleep a bit, have breakfast,put on the clothes that she had prepared beforegoing out, and after a fifteen-minute drive, six,clock in at the hospital where she works.

    Six oclock, the time that has marked her life foryears; that time of everybody, or badly called ofnobody; that time that is usually the last timeof the night or the first of the day, and that forcenturies, has been claimed by both; the time atwhich some, like her, start work, and others, likeher, do not want to abandon their dreams. Thetime of those who feel it is the moment that theirfears and nightmares end. And of those whoknow that they start there. It is the time withsome sun and moon and no sun and moon

    and with plenty of both; it is the time in whichwe think we have forgotten and is the time thatour memories hurt us most fiercely. The timeat which every day, Alice starts being...or stopsbeing, the one she is.

    After having promised herself hundreds oftimes that she would not go to the milongason weekdays, and after hundreds of times ofbreaking her promises, she decided to go ondoing itwith no promises and no guilt.

    Taking the elevator she was feeling a strangeand pleasant sense of physical tiredness; shewondered whether if she had stayed sleeping

    at home, she would be rested, or if life wouldhave managed to make her more tired? Shelooked at herself in the mirror and felt fu lfilled.

    An accomplice and a pal, the mirror showedher the image of a refined mature womanwith all her accounts settled. She did not oweanything to life, not even those small accountsmentioned on a tango lyric that had been for-gotten unnoticed. She looked back at herselfin the mirror and couldnt help but smile, herlast drops of sweat still insisting on makingher hair look like a blob on her forehead andcheeks.     that it was a great night, she may have dancedless than other nights, but she danced with thoseshe enjoys dancing with and danced those danc-es that a milonguera knows touches the soul.

    When the elevator stopped on her floor andbefore getting off, she smiled knowing that themirror only showed her image, without judgingor criticizing her; perhaps knowing that in onlyfour hours it would see her again, bright andbeautiful, with no sweat drops on her hair, nowpulled back in a ponytail.

    As punctual as always, she started her shift. Thehabitual visit and checking of the ward took hera bit more than half an hour. When she finished,she gave the report to the chief doctor of theward. She noticed him like many times before afflicted, overwhelmed with obligations,immersed in todays sadness, delaying pleasures

    till tomorrow, allowing fate to manipulate time,time that seemed to mean not living.

    Something in her boss made her think that hewas one of those people who has been markedwith an invisible mark destined to have anunhappy fate. She imagined that he had lackedsome affection and that that could have changedhis days. He even lacked an elevator mirrorwhich would show him what she could see.

    Maybe, seeing him like this encouraged her toask him the question. Doctor, do you live in abuilding with an elevator? The answer was no.

    Alice asked again, do you dance tango? Again,the answer was no.

    Before leaving the office, Alicia looked at him inthe same way she had been looked at so manytimes before being asked to dance and said...YOU SHOULD.

    As she walked she felt behind her an invisible, butnot related to work bridge that joined her to herboss and, in the music of her favorite tango, sheheard an echo of YOU SHOULD.

    On Sunday May 26 the Championship Final Roundswere held at the Art Factory. It was an exceptionalexhibition, with a high level of competitors and muchenthusiasm from the audience.

    The Triple champions - in the categories Vals,Milonga and Adult Tango - were Fernando Carras-

    co and Jimena Hoffner (interviewed in this issuepage 20, Milongueros of the World was won by

    the couple Edwin Enrique Thorny and Jeniffer Yepes,and, in the category Senior Tango, Luis Anchavaand Marta Doctorovich.

    The winners in Adult and Senior Tango will repre-sent the City of Buenos Aires in the Final round of theWorld Tango Championship mentioned above. All the

    couples that have placed between.

    From the dance hall to the stageIn order to create a good funny show with themilonga and its characters, one should have livedand observed this environment for a long time. AndRamiro Gigliotti, author and director, has been therefor many years.

    This play is a succession of scenes -originally, shortstories- joined by the dance hall. An environment

    which acts as the show of human beings. Thegoers each of them different in their individual-ity follow codes and rituals, repeat and expressfeelings, which only emphasize what makes themrecognizable.

    Thus, there are men who develop a dialogue wherethe only topic is women; the old annoying guy whodoesnt let the young man dance by catching himwith an uninteresting talk; the one who suffers anended love, and starts his monologue with a lot ofhatred but finishes admitting a love that has notdied; the woman who talks about her love misfor-tunes; and so forth. A series that has been renewedthis year 2013.

    The performance, which barely appears to be so, buta transfer from the dance hall to the stage, is made

    by regular goers of the milongas. But, the acting anddirection are worth highlighting since they make thisa recommendable show.

    A musical with dialogues on abasic artistDeath is a term after which our projects cannot becometrue. In this show, Homero Manzi becomes aware ofhis imminent end and has a flashback of significantmoments of his life to finally meet the human side.

    Where are you going little cart driver from Once? isthe question-song that emerges at that moment.From then on, it is scenes with dialogues and songs,which intertwine his political activities and concep-tions, his love life and, mainly, his relationship withsinger Nelly Omar.

    In the text, there are also updated claims, like theone that says that popular culture has to be a Statepolicy. And a monologue with his son Acho, where hetalks about his experience and gives advice.

    Artists make an outstanding performance; JorgeSurez and Julia Calvo give the songs sparkle andexpressiveness that reinforce the story. Nstor Can-iglia plays, competently, the different persons withwhom the main characters dialogue.

    The authors made an extraordinary show, with very

    good taste in the selection of songs, of actors andmusicians who share the stage, plus the techniciansbehind the scenes.

    A tribute was paid to researcher, writer and jour-nalist Gaspar Jos Astarita, on June 8, 2013. It tookplace in the city of Chivilcoy (Province of BuenosAires), were he was born and raised, commemoratingthe 10 anniversary of his death.

    Gaspar Astarita, made a valuable contributionto the knowledge and the dissemination of tangoculture.     Floor Tango (formerly Salon Tango) and StageTango will be chosen. The qualifying and semifinalrounds will be at the Exhibitions Center and thefinal rounds at Luna Park Stadium.

    The winners in each category will receive a prizeof 40,000 pesos. Awards and special mentions willbe given to those in second and third place. All thecontestants will receive a certificate for their partici-pation in the championship.

    Nowadays, we dance tango as an expression offreedom, interaction, connection. Meaning Imalive. I want to live. I want to be part. I want tofeel. I want to be felt. I want to embrace. I wantto communicate from my embrace. I want to be

    embraced. With feeling. Deeply. I want to be a lit-tle happy, among so much uncertainty, ambiguity,double speech and lack of information.

    I need to talk. Talk from the feeling and the body,

    no more and no less. It would be as moving from Ithink, therefore I amto I dance, therefore I am.

    Leopoldo Marechal, in his novel Megafn orthe War, provided an interesting descrip-tion: a skinny-faced and feverish-eyed being

    broke in and addressing the bandoneon players, hesaid: -Listen, music souls! If tango has died, you crywith a reason. And if it hasnt. Why are you crying?Ineffable malefactors, up your hearts! Tango is aninfinite possibility.- Discepoln! cried together the riders.(3)

    Words which drive us to delve, with todayseyes, into Enrique Santos Discpolos (Discepoln)famous phrase: Tango is a sad thought which canbe danced. We know from Borges, that it emergedaround the 1930s.(4)

    A phrase of extraordinary applicability, whichovercame the big controversies that were causedon its way. Great attention has been dedicated tothis phrase by Jorge Luis Borges(4), Ernesto Sba-to(5), musicians, composers, reporters and manyothers, who have contributed a wide range ofopinions about it. Even Ezequiel Martnez Estradacontributed a comment: It is possible, at its rhythm,to stop the thought and let the soul float in the body.

    Currently, Discpolos phrase is frequently citedby the general public, the media, experts, intel-lectuals and as an instruction in some essays atuniversities.

    Discpolo described the feelings of a societythat today is part of the past. Despite its historicalimportance and formal and conceptual impact,that phrase should be measured by those who cur-rently go to milongas, with the object of v alidatingits applicability.
