Su amplia oferta cultural abar-ca diferentes espacios, temá-ticas y ámbitos que permiten conocer no solo el presente y futuro del arte, sino también el pasado de la ciudad. Pre-cisamente, en esta línea de revisión de su propia historia, el Ayuntamiento de Palma ha puesto en valor su propio patrimonio y lo ha relanzado como espacios renovados para la difusión del arte y de la cul-tura de sus principales creado-res. Un arte a pie de calle y ac-cesible al ciudadano. Antiguos casales y murallas renacentis-tas convertidas en lanzaderas de la creatividad, desde los ecos lejanos del pasado a las atronadoras vanguardias que marcan tendencias.

Can Balaguer es un casal cuyos orígenes se remontan a 1304 y que, desde entonces, ha for-mado parte de la idiosincrasia de Palma. Ahora, tras una reha-bilitación que ha durado seis años, Can Balaguer abre sus puertas para enseñar cómo se vivía en una casa señorial de Palma. La planta baja muestra, a través de una exposición, sus orígenes, su historia, su reha-bilitación y su futuro. Se han programado una serie de acti-vidades para acercar el proyec-to a la ciudadanía y a los visi-tantes. El objetivo es que Can Balaguer se convierta en uno de los ejes del futuro Museo de Historia de la ciudad para dar a conocer el rico patrimonio artístico que alojaban los ca-

City Council decided to revi-talize its local patrimony and relaunch spaces where the art and culture of the city’s most notable creators could be displayed. It wanted art to be accessible, right on the street. So old country homes and Renaissance murals beca-me launchpads for creativity, uniting the distant echoes of the past with the thunderous trend-setting avant-guard. Can Balaguer is a country home dating back to 1304. It has been part of the idiosyn-crasy of Palma ever since. And now, after a six-year-long res-toration project, Can Balaguer is opening its doors to give vi-sitors a taste of what life was like in one of Palma’s state-

liest homes. An exhibition on the ground floor takes visitors through its origins, history, restoration and future. A series of activities has been schedu-led to introduce the project to locals and tourists alike. The goal is to make Can Balaguer one of the axes of the city’s future History Museum, sha-ring the rich artistic heritage that these country houses held and serving as a museum for decorative arts.Can Balaguer has evolved throughout the centuries and the home seen today is the result of an expansion com-pleted in the 18th century. In those days, the river had been diverted outside the city walls and the home underwent a

El pro-pietario de ese momento era José Amar de Montaner y Zan-glada, segundo marqués del Reguer. A finales del siglo XIX fue adquirida por Rafael Blanes Tolosa, que realizó una impor-tante reforma en el edificio. En 1927 pasó a ser propiedad del músico Josep Balaguer Vallès y de sus hermanas. La familia donó el casal al Ayuntamiento

de Palma en 1951 con la obli-gación de que alojara el Círculo de Bellas Artes.Can Balaguer tendrá diferentes espacios que se destinarán a dar a conocer la historia de Pal-ma. La planta baja, que acoge la sala de exposiciones tem-porales, está abierta de lunes a viernes de, 16:30 a 20:00, y los sábados, de 10:15 a 14:00. Allí se puede ver la muestra Can Balaguer. mostró en la pasada edición de la Bienal de Venecia. Se trata de un recorrido por el proceso creativo de la rehabilitación del Casal Balaguer con planos, maquetas y fotografías, mon-tados tal como se agolparon en el estudio de los arquitectos en Barcelona. También se hace un recorrido histórico desde sus orígenes hasta su rehabi-litación, que se dividió en tres fases y supuso una inversión de seis millones de euros prove-nientes del programa europeo de fondos Feder, el Gobierno y el Ayuntamiento de Palma.A pocos metros de Can Ba-laguer está Casal Solleric, un centro de exposiciones que se encuentra en un casal de mitad del siglo XVIII. En la planta noble puede visitarse la exposición Toni Catany de ida y de vuelta, una muestra que se plantea como una nueva mirada, a partir de una aproxi-mación diferente al corpus del trabajo de Toni Catany, para conseguir una visión global de su obra. El proyecto cuen-ta con el comisariado de Alain De Hooghe y Antoni Garau, vicepresidente y director de

la Fundación Toni Catany res-pectivamente, y ambos cola-boradores estrechos y amigos personales del fotógrafo. La muestra, a pesar de poseer un carácter retrospectivo, pro-pone revelar un Catany bas-tante diferente de como se le conoce y del recuerdo que se suele tener de su trabajo.La exposición Toni Catany. De ida y vuelta, que cuenta con unas 150 fotografías, muchas de ellas inéditas para el público, quiere hacer una revisión del trabajo de Catany con una mi-rada transversal que entrecruza cronologías y geografías (desde su Mediterráneo al Caribe o la India), poniendo especial énfa-sis en las fotografías realizadas en su última etapa, hasta el 2013. La muestra propone un sugerente viaje de ida y vuelta por la cartografía íntima de Ca-tany, que permite recorrer los lugares y objetos, así como las inquietudes y obsesiones que encontramos en sus imágenes y configuran el singular imagi-nario que le acompañó duran-te toda su carrera. Una oferta más por la que recalar en nues-tra isla y visitar la ciudad.

Un nuevo espacio para la ciudad (Can Balaguer, A new space for the city) ex-hibit, which features the ar-moire displayed in the latest edition of the Venice Biennale, will be located. The exhibit is a journey through the creati-ve process of renovating the Balaguer home and is compri-sed of blueprints, models and photographs mounted in the same jumbled fashion they were in the architects’ firm in Barcelona. It also offers a tour through history, from the home’s origins to is restora-tion, which was divided into three phases and involved an investment of six million eu-ros, provided by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the Government and the Palma City Council.A few metres from Can Ba-laguer is Casal Solleric, an exhibition centre located in a home from the mid-18th cen-tury. On the home’s main floor is the Toni Catany de ida y de vuelta (Toni Catany there and back) exhibit, a fresh look at the work of Toni Catany that achieves a global vision of his

collection by providing a view of it through a different lens. The project is curated by Alain De Hooghe and Antoni Garau, vice-president and director of the Toni Catany Foundation, respectively. Both were close collaborators and personal friends of the photographer. The exhibit, though retrospec-tive, aims to reveal a Catany much different from the one who we know or remember from his work. The Toni Ca-tany. De ida y vuelta exhibit in-cludes around 150 photogra-phs, many of them never seen before by the public. It recons-tructs Catany’s work with a transversal approach that criss crosses chronologies and geo-graphies (from his native Me-diterranean to the Caribbean or India), placing special emphasis on the photographs taken in his last period, up to 2013. The exhibit proposes a suggestive journey there and back through Catany’s inti-mate cartography, a window to the places and objects, as well as the questions and ob-sessions that emerge in his photographs and shaped the unique imagination that ac-companied him throughout his career. Just another reason to make a stop on our island and visit the city.
