2013 Escape: Ford’s compact SUV goes luxBy ANN M. JOBFor ThE ASSociATEd PrESS

With European-style handling, luxury looks, surprising refinement and new features for 2013, Ford’s compact sport utility vehicle, the Escape, doesn’t seem like an Es-cape anymore.

The familiar boxy shape is re-placed by a sleek, rich-looking exterior, and the Escape’s V-6, manual transmission and gasoline-electric hybrid model are gone.

Instead, every 2013 Escape comes with a six-speed automatic and a choice of three, gasoline-powered, four-cylinder engines.

Importantly, all three power-plants garner a minimum 30-miles-per-gallon-on-the-high-way fuel economy rating from the federal government, and two of the three are turbocharged and deliver at least 184 foot-pounds of torque. In contrast, the only 2012 Escape with a fuel mileage rating of 30 mpg or more on the window sticker was the Escape Hybrid, which started at more than $30,000.

Starting manufacturer’s suggest-ed retail price, including destina-tion charge, is $23,295 for a base, 2013 Escape S with 168-horsepow-er, naturally aspirated four cylinder, automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.

This base 2013 Escape is rated at 22/31 mpg in city/highway travel and includes air conditioning and cloth seats, with Ford’s Sync voice-activated entertainment system available as a $295 option.

Unfortunately, pricing goes up considerably from the base mod-el, and the test Escape with four-wheel drive and top equipment and trim level called Titanium, plus options, topping out at more than $36,000.

In between the base Escape and the top model are, thankfully, a number of choices - all with two rows of seats providing seating for five. The lowest starting retail price for a 2013 Escape with one of Ford’s peppier, turbocharged engines is $25,895 for an SE with 178-horse-power four cylinder, automatic transmission, front-wheel drive

and mileage rating of 23/33 mpg.The lowest starting retail price

for a four-wheel drive 2013 Escape is $27,645, and this is with the 178-horsepower, turbocharged four cylinder.

The Escape has many competi-tors, including the top-selling Honda CR-V with a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $23,325 for a 2012 base model with 185-horsepower four cylinder, five-speed automatic and front-wheel drive. Among the CR-V’s standard features is a rearview camera. The 2012 Hyundai Tucson SUV has a starting retail price of $19,970 with 165-horsepower four cylinder, five-speed manual and front-wheel drive. A 2012 Tucson with six-speed automatic starts at $20,970.

Note that both the base CR-V and the base Tucson with automatic are rated at 23/31 mpg by the govern-ment, which is in line with the 2013 Escape models.

Ford’s re-engineered Escape is a sibling of the company’s Kuga, which is a compact crossover in Europe. This European heritage

was one of the first impressions of the 2013 Escape test model. The vehicle felt solidly planted on the road, even on twisty mountain roads.

Weight shift from one side to the

other during curves was well-man-aged and provided a more confi-dent ride than that found in previ-ous Escapes. In fact, there was little tippy feel, and road bumps came through mostly as mild vibrations.

All about cars

2012 Ford Fusion: Sedan offers choices with styleOne of the top-selling ve-

hicles since it was first intro-duced in 2005, the Ford Fusion continues to sell well in the United States due to its pricing, size, technology, safety and style. The popular mid-size set a full-year sales record of 219,219 in 2010 – the first time since 2004 a Ford car eclipsed the 200,000 milestone – and it remains a top-10-seller in 2012.

2012 Ford Fusion continues to offer four engine choices for mid-size car customers: 2.5-li-ter four-cylinder; 3.0-liter V-6; 3.5-liter V-6 and a best-in-class hybrid powertrain while it continues its reputation for safety as it once again has been named an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick.

‘Green’ philosophyFusion also delivers competi-

tive fuel economy across the lineup. The 175hp 2.5-liter I-4 is rated at 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway; the 240hp 3.0-liter V-6 is estimated at 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway and the 263hp 3.5-liter V-6 standard on Fusion Sport should get 18 city and 27 highway (front-wheel-drive configurations). Its hybrid set-up combines the 2.5-liter Atkinson I-4 engine and a per-manent magnet electric mo-tor that is rated at a combined 19 1 h p a n d a n E PA ra t i n g o f 41mpg city and 36mpg highway.

With “Green” in mind, the 3.0-liter V-6 is flex-fuel-ca-pable, meaning the engine can run on unleaded gasoline, E85 (up to 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline) or any mix of the two. Fuel injection and spark timing are adjusted auto-matically according to the actu-al blend detected by electronic sensors. Additionally, Fusion is approximately 85 percent recy-clable by weight, and it is esti-mated that more than 20 per-cent of Fusion’s vehicle weight is from recycled content.

Bold stylingAt the end of its second gen-

eration (a new Fusion is planned for 2013), the Fusion has text bo o k mid - size di me ns io ns, checking in at 190.6 inches in length, 56.8 inches in height and 72.2 inches in width on a 107.4-inch wheelbase, with a curb weight of 3342 lbs.

With its aggressive tri-bar horizontal grillework, beveled hood and clean lines, Fusion of-fers deep trunk space, acous-tically laminated windshield, thick front-door glass and dou-ble or triple sealing gaskets for noise abatement.

A sse m b l e d a t Fo rd ’s He r-m os i l l o ( Mex i co) S ta m p i n g and Assembly Plant, Fusion is a bold family sedan with chis-eled headlights and a confident demeanor with a hint of sporti-ness.

Steady performanceMy SEL trim was powered by

the 3.0-liter engine with auto-matic transmission and AWD. T h e s e t - u p p r o d u c e d 2 4 0 horsepower on gasoline and

250 hp on E85, with 223 and 228 lbs-ft of torque respectively. My week of mixed-use tests (strict-ly on gasoline) yielded an aver-age of 22.9mpg.

Form a performance perspec-tive, Fusion is adequate, but my 3.0-liter was not nearly as ag-gressive as my test 3.5-liter was last year. Off the line, my Fusion sprinted from zero to 60mph in 7.8 seconds and steadily pur-sued the quarter-mile in 16-flat. On the highway, passing is average for the niche, but don’t expect to overpower a slightly slower vehicle.

Handling is firm and Fusion takes corners with little sway, though the rack-and-pinion, electric power-assisted steer-ing can get a bit loose. The front independent suspension with stabilizer bar and the rear mul-tilink, fully independent sus-pension with twistblade lower control arms and stabilizer bar eagerly smooth out road imper-fections and the driver does feel in control.

Interior tech and comfortFusion’s cabin is designed

for comfort with seating for five. The interior measures 38.7 inches of front headroom with 37.8 inches in row two, legroom is 42.3 up front and 37.1 in the second seats and shoulder room provides 57.4 in the first seats and 56.5 behind.

The interior design is upscale for the niche with leather seats, climate control, intermittent speed-sensitive wipers, power windows, tilt/telescopic steer-ing wheel, message center with trip computer and a steering wheel with cruise and redun-dant audio controls. Techwise, Fusion offers MyKey® as a stan-dard feature, which allows own-ers to program a “key limit” to certain vehicle functions to help promote safe driving habits, in-cluding limiting top speed, and a persistent Belt-Minder® alert. Additionally, my SEL trim Ford SYNC® for hands-free access with simple voice commands.

From a safety perspective, The 2012 Ford Fusion offers a suite of innovative safety tech-nologies including dual front air bags, front seat side air-bags, first and second row side air curtains, personal safety system, tire pressure monitor-ing system, AdvanceTrac with Electronic Stability Control, LATCH, child safety looks on the rear doors, SOS post-crash alert, perimeter alarm and Se-curiLock passive anti-theft sys-tem, and a compact spare wheel and tire.

Fusion starts at $ 20,705 (the hybrid at $28,755) and runs from the basic S trim at the starting price, and moves to the SE at $22.975, the SEL at $25,425 and

the Sport at $27,225. My SEL and its leather-trimmed interior was outfitted with the 3.0-liter en-gine with automatic transmis-sion and AWD for a net base of $27,515. The Equipment Group option added Driver’s Vision Package, Reverse Sensing Sys-tem, power moon roof and Dol-

by Surround Sound, 390-watt-12-speaker sound system with 2 subwoofers, for $1995. The decklid spoiler added 295, re-mote start was $345, and desti-nation charges were $795. With package savings and incentives, the sticker price as tested was $30,150.

French auto parts maker expanding reach in Mich.

SALINE, Mich. — French auto parts maker Faurecia SA says it’s acquiring an interior components plant in Michi-gan and creating a joint venture to make parts at a separate plant in Detroit.

Faurecia and Rush Group announced Thursday that they’re creating Detroit Manufacturing Systems, a joint venture to build and automotive interior com-ponents in Detroit. The companies say the venture expects to employ about 500 people in Detroit within the next three years and will make parts at first for Ford Motor Co.

The Automotive Components Hold-ings LLC plant Faurecia is buying is in Saline. It’s located 40 miles west of De-troit and makes parts for Ford vehicles.

Ford created ACH in 2005 when Ford took back 17 facilities from Visteon Corp. A tentative deal to sell the plant was announced in August.

Hybrid vehicle maker to open plant in Danville

DANVILLE, Va.— A hybrid armored vehicle maker plans to open a plant and new headquarters in Danville.

City officials said Thursday that Hy-brid Vehicles of Danville Inc. will invest $1.5 million in the new facilities.

The plant will produce employ 25 workers initially. The work force could

grow to at least 150 workers over three years.

Hybrid Vehicles of Danville received a $420,000 grant from the Tobacco Com-mission Revitalization Opportunity Fund. Owner Jim Bailey says the grant enables the company to buy equipment and hire workers to meet existing con-tracts.

GM earns $1B in 1Q but Europe drags down resultsDETROIT — General Motors earned

$1 billion in the first quarter but losses

in Europe and a big charge weighed on results. The company’s first-quarter net income was only a third of last year’s, when results were boosted by the sale of GM’s stake in a parts company.

GM earned 60 cents per share com-pared with $1.77 a year earlier. Revenue rose 4 percent to $37.8 billion.

GM lost $256 million pretax in Europe, where it also took a $590 million charge related to pension costs. North America led gains with a $1.7 billion pretax profit. GM made $529 million in Asia and $83 million in South America.

Vehicle demand to keep Ohio Chrysler plant running

TOLEDO, Ohio — Automaker Chrys-ler says it is forgoing plans for the tradi-tional summer shutdown at four plants, including a northwest Ohio facility that makes the Jeep Wrangler.

A union official in Toledo tells The Blade newspaper that it’s good news for workers there who normally would be off for two weeks without pay around the July Fourth holiday.

The plant will stay open because of strong demand for the Wrangler. Chrys-ler says sales are up 30 percent over a year ago.

Chrysler plants in Detroit, Belvidere, Ill., and Toluca, Mexico also will skip the usual two-week shutdown to keep up with demand.

Chrysler says it will go ahead with

plans to halt production of the Jeep Liberty in Toledo for two weeks in July, though its sales are up, too.

Cooper Tire 1Q profit rises on better pricing, mix

FINDLAY, Ohio — Cooper Tire & Rub-ber Co. said Wednesday its first-quarter profit jumped 38 percent, as improve-ments in pricing and product mix more than offset lower sales volumes.

The Findlay, Ohio-based tire mak-er earned $21.6 million, or 34 cents per share, up from $15.7 million, or 25 cents per share, in the same quarter last year.

Sales rose 9.1 percent to $984.3 million from $901.8 million, as North Ameri-can tire sales rose 8 percent to $698 mil-lion and international tire sales jumped 11 percent to $404 million.

The profit beat Wall Street predictions. Analysts, on average, expected a profit of 31 cents per share on $999 million in revenue, according to a FactSet poll.

Cooper said that pricing and product mix improvements boosted its sales by $71 million and helped offset $31 million in higher manufacturing costs, mainly stemming from its three-month-long lockout of union workers at its Findlay, Ohio plant that ended in February, and $8 million in higher raw material costs.

Cooper shares rose 30 cents, or 2 per-cent, to $15.45 in midday trading.

On Monday, the fire company received a donation of a Resusci Little Anne AED Training Unit from the Pennsylvania Automotive Association and the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation, according to a release from Lawrence Chevrolet in Mechanicsburg, which sponsored the donation.

Gary Lawrence, owner of Lawrence Chevrolet presented the CPR training mannequin and accessory supplies to Jim Hall, New Kingstown Fire Company President at the Lawrence dealership on the Carlisle Pike. The donated CPR unit signals the trainee, telling when the right pressure is applied in the right spot or if the trainee is breathing correctly into the victim’s mouth.

The new donation will be used to instruct volunteer firefighters and other members of the community.

The New Kingstown Fire Company will get some help from “Little Anne” for its CPR training classes.
