The Truth about Everything Welcome to Holy Week! For us this week commemorates the central event of human history. As Fr. John Richard Neuhaus observed,, “If what Chris ans say about Good Friday is true, then it is, quite simply, the truth about everything.” A poignant story will bring home this point. Remembering What Ma ers We have Holy Week to focus on that truth – to remember what truly ma ers: the Paschal Mystery, the Passion, Death and Resurrec on of Jesus. As we say in the Creed, “For our sake he was crucified under Pon us Pilate, he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day.”

Poignant Story about Remembering I once heard a poignant story about remembering. It concerns a man suffering from Alzheimer’s. Some mes we joke about the disease - it is natural considering how much forge ulness is part of our human condi on. But Alzheimer's is more than forge ng birthdays and where the keys are. For the person's family it is a wrenching burden. In this case, the family watched in pain as the man lost different aspects of his memory. First, he began forge ng ordinary things like how to turn on the shower or how to use a toaster. Soon he could no longer remember people who were his old friends or close work associates. Then he began to forget even who his children were and, finally, his wife. As the man’s life was drawing to an end, his family gathered around his bed. He knew none of them. His wife placed a small crucifix in his hand. At first he seemed puzzled, then looked intently and said, “Jesus.” A Week to Remember That man had forgo en everything, but he did remember the one thing which ma ers – the event which includes everything else. From his childhood he had closely followed the ac vi es of Holy Week. He became convinced that it enacted the most important happening in human history. And that it was also the most important happening in his life: The day Jesus took our sins away. At our Palm Sunday Masses we listen to the Passion of our Lord, according to Ma hew. We will hear the Passion account once again on Good Friday, according to John. May we not miss the graces God wishes to pour out upon us – that this will indeed be for us a week to remember. Central Events of Holy Week This bulle n has the full schedule for Holy Week but I would like to underscore the main liturgies: • Mass of the Last Supper (bilingual) on Thursday, April 13, 7 pm • Venera on of Cross & Communion, Friday, April 14, 6 pm (English), 7:30 pm (Spanish) • Easter Vigil, Saturday, April 15, 8 pm (mainly English with some Spanish)

Confession Opportuni es Jesus died and rose “for our sake” to reconcile us to the Father and to each other by the forgiveness of sins. During Holy Week we have opportuni es to receive the Sacrament of Reconcilia on. There will be Penance Services on Monday evening at both St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Bothell and Immaculate Concep on, Arlington. St. Pius X, Mountlake Terrace will host a Penance Service on Tuesday evening. These services begin at 7 pm. On Holy Saturday I will be available for Confessions from 3 to 5 pm.

Generations of Faith 2016-2017

Generations of Faith is St. Mary’s “all generation” religious education. Please join us to share a free family meal followed by our theme of the year, The Creed and Professing our

Faith catechesis. 2016-2017 Sessions

4/26/17

Child care available at all sessions.

Orange registration forms are available in the north

vestibule for the 2016-2017 school year. Please complete one form for your whole family.

Liturgy of the Word for Children Children’s Liturgy is actually the Liturgy of the Word for children. There is no preregistration

required. We cover the Gospel of the day at a level the children can understand and enjoy. We enrich

this with discussion, prayers, songs and plays. We also try to raise awareness of God’s love, the humanity of Jesus, the Seasons of the Church, the

understanding of symbols in the Mass and the context of the Bible. Our aim is to make the children’s experience of

church meaningful, whilst helping them to grow in the faith of the Catholic Church and develop as full and active members of our

Parish Community. During the 9:30 am Mass and before the Liturgy of the Word, Father Bloom invites children up to the sanctuary. The children will receive a blessing from Father and then process to their classroom. After Children’s Liturgy, the children will process to the main vestibule and quietly return to their families. Note: At least two

students will be chosen to bring up the gifts. Thank you for your continued prayers and support during this ministry; It is a blessing to

watch these little disciples grow in their faith while lifting up Jesus and loving others.

Read Sunday’s Gospel: Matthew 26:14-27:66 Gospel Summary Each year on this Sunday we follow the events of Jesus’ life from the time he entered Jerusalem until the point where he was laid in the tomb after his crucifixion. Jesus first entered Jerusalem riding a donkey amid waving palm leaves. It was in Jerusalem that he foretold Judas’ betrayal, Peter’s denial, and established the Eucharist at the Passover meal. Jesus took his disciples into Gethsemane to pray, but they could not stay awake with him. In the garden, Jesus was turned over to the authorities, tried before the Sanhedrin, brought to Pilate, and sentenced to death. When offered a choice during the festival to release a prisoner, the people chose the release of Barabbas. Their choice was beyond Pilate’s comprehension, so he symbolically washed his hands of the whole deal. Jesus was turned over to the Roman authorities for crucifixion and mocked by them. Finally, Jesus died on the cross. The earth darkened and quaked. He was prepared quickly for burial and laid in the tomb. Reflection for Families There is much to reflect on in this reading. One interesting note, however, is the different responses Judas and Peter had when they came face to face with their rejection of Christ. After his three denials, Peter “wept bitterly.”These tears of regret led the way to reconciliation when Peter first encountered the risen Christ. Judas, on the other hand, knew what he did was wrong, but he couldn’t face the hopelessness his actions brought. To relieve the pain of what he had done, Judas took his own life. Some days it is difficult (even beyond measure) to be a parent. The lesson we learn today is that reconciliation and healing bring us long-term joy instead of living in the harsh bitterness of despair. Bringing the Gospel Into Your Family Either in your parish or some outside setting, pray the Stations of the Cross. Many booklets are available (ask at your parish or local religious bookstore) for families to follow the Passion of Jesus. If possible, allow the children to lead the prayer at some of the stations.

Jesus’ Death is Our Example “Jesus, who upon entering into the world said: "I have come, O God, to do your

will" (cf. Heb 10:9), made himself obedient to the Father in everything and, "having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end" (Jn 13:1), giving himself completely for them. He who had come "not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many" (Mk 10:45), attains on the Cross the

heights of love: "Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" (Jn 15:13). And he died for us while we were yet sinners (cf. Rom 5:8).In

this way Jesus proclaims that life finds its center, its meaning and its fulfillment when it is given up. At this point our meditation becomes praise and thanksgiving, and at the same time urges us to imitate Christ and follow in his footsteps (cf. 1 Pt 2:21). We too are called to give our lives for our brothers and sisters, and thus to realize in the fullness of truth the meaning and destiny of our existence.” -- John

Paul II (The Gospel of Life, n. 51)
