510 University of Leicester Dr Graham Smith, senior lecturer in anaesthesia in the Uni- versity of Glasgow, has been appointed to the foundation chair of anxsthesia. He graduated from Guy’s Hospital Medical School, University of London, in 1966. After holding junior and senior house posts at Guy’s Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary he was appointed in 1969 research fellow to the hyperbaric unit, department of surgery, Univer- sity of Glasgow, and honorary senior registrar in anaesthetics at the Western Infirmary, Glasgow. In 1970 he was appointed lecturer in anaesthesia m the University of Glasgow, becoming senior lecturer and honorary consultant to the Glasgow Western and Gartnavel hospitals in 1974. University of Manchester Dr I. M. Leck, reader in community medicine at the Univer- sity, has been appointed to the chair of community medicine. He will succeed Prof. Alwyn Smith who was recently appointed to a new chair of epidemiology and social oncology at the University of Manchester. Royal College of Pathologists On the occasion of the 15th Roy Cameron memorial lecture given by Prof. A. R. Williamson on Feb. 15, the honorary fel- lowship of the College was conferred upon Sir Douglas Black and Prof. L. P. Garrod. Appointment of ASH director Mr David Simpson, director of the British section of Amnesty International, has been appointed as director of ASH, the campaign for Action on Smoking and Health.
