    In the Locate – Enter First Corner of Surface  dialog box )erify that the

    X" Y" and Z fields contain ,eros. hoose ! .

    To center the image of the surface in your wor%space" select $ie% on the

    FEM! menu bar" then from the drop down menus" choose &utoscale and

    then $isi'le. You should ha)e a surface in the wor%space that loo%s li%e

    this 2

    The rectangles that appears in the surface are not the elements. The

    elements will be defined in a later section.

    6ere" you will define the physical properties of the material that composes

    the model.

    From the FEM! menu bar select Model then choose Material.

    this model" choose Cancel to exit the next material definition.

    1.$.:. (efine the Pro)erties of the Elements

    +n this step" you will define the properties of the shell elements that will be

    used in the next step to mesh the model.

    From the FEM! menu bar select Model then choose Pro)erty.

    +n the (efine Pro)erty – PL&"E Element "y)e  dialog box clic% the

    Elem*Pro)erty "y)e button.

    The Element * Pro)erty "y)e dialog box appears. elect Plate and )erify

    that all other settings are the same as illustrated.

    This last step will instruct NE/Nastran to use ;shell? elements with four nodes @grid pointsA" one in each corner.

    1.$.=. Mesh the Model

    +n the first part of this step" you will di)ide the model into ten elements

    along its long axis and four elements along its short axis. The thic%ness of 

    the plate re(uieres only one element when using shell elements.

    From the FEM! menu bar select Mesh then choose Mesh Control  and

    Si.e &lon/ Cur0e.

    The Entity Selection – Select Cur0e1s2 to Set Mesh Si.e  dialog boxappears. Bith your mouse" point the top edge of the surface in the

    wor%space and left clic% @see figure belowA. 0o the same with the botton

    edge.

    Select ! . The Mesh Si.e &lon/ Cur0es  dialog box appears. +n the

    Mesh Si.e  box enter 1# for the 3um'er of Elements. The Mesh Si.e

    &lon/ Cur0es dialog box should appear as illustrated.

    Surface.

    Bith your mouse" point to and left clic% the surface of the model @point

    anywhere in the rectangleA. elect !   in the Entity Selection – Select

    Surfaces to Mesh dialog box.

    The &utomesh Surfaces dialog box appears. lic% the down arrow in the

    Pro)erty box and select +,&luminum Plate.

    The left side of the aluminum plate is firmly supported. +n this step" you

    will create that constraint.

    From the FEM! menu bar select Model" then choose Constraint and n

    Cur0e.

    The Create or &cti0ate Constraint Set  dialog box appears. +n the "itlefield type 2 Fi4ed Ed/e.

    elect ! . The Create Constraints on Geometry dialog box opens.

    +n the entries are the same as in this illustration" select ! . Bhen the

    Entity Selection – Enter Cur0e1s2 to Select dialog box opens" select

    Cancel. The constraint has now been applied. Your model should now

    The small triangles with the letter >F? below them signify that the edge is

    fixed.

    1.$.'. &))ly the Load

    The load is the '# pound upward force applied to the right side of the

    aluminum plate. This step shows you how to enter that load.

    From the FEM! menu bar select Model then choose Load and n Cur0e.

    Enter 5, Pounds  in the "itle  field of the Create or &cti0ate Load Set

    dialog box.

    appears. Bith your mouse point to and clic on the right side edge of the

    model.

    Force  and enter the )alue of '# in the FY  box. @Note that the force is

     positi)e since it is acting in the positi)e Y direction.A

    elect ! . The Entity Selection – Enter Cur0e1s2 to Select dialog boxappears again. elect Cancel. The load is now applied. Your model should

    now appear li%e this 2

     Now the two load arrows on the right edge.

    To sa)e your file select File from the FEM! menu bar and then choose

    Sa0e &s. Enter a file name @Example !roblem 1A and clic% Sa0e.
