TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
It’s Independence Day week, and there is a link worth tracing between the Declaration of Independence and the language of liturgy. One of the signers of the Declaration on that July 4 long ago was Charles Carroll, probably the wealthiest man in the colonies and one of the few Catholics on the political scene. As a flourish to his signature, he sought to distinguish himself from other prominent citizens bearing the same name by penning “Charles Carroll of Carrolltown”—a defiant “come and get me if you dare” postscript aimed at the British. Carroll’s brother John was a priest and patriot who in 1789 was given the task of organizing the Catholic Church in this country. By 1791 he had assembled a synod, or assembly of delegates, to launch that task formally. Archbishop Carroll wanted to gain acceptance of our faith by American people who mistrusted our customs and could not comprehend our liturgy. He made the amazing proposal to Rome that our liturgy should be prayed not in Latin, but in the vernacular, English. His wish was denied, but one hundred sixty years later, his deep desire helped the American bishops and scholars at the Second Vatican Council to win the vote in favor of the vernacular not just for the United States, but for the Church throughout the world.

The Assembly’s Book
Ritual Song / Second Edition
There are three principal liturgical books of the Catholic liturgy that comprise the Missal: The priest’s book or the Sacramentary, the Deacon’s book or the Lectionary and the Assembly’s book: the Hymnal. Each role; Priest (celebrant) Deacon (Reader) and Assembly has important and integral roles to fulfill. Each has its book to help fulfill that role.
Our new Ritual Song hymnal is such a book that includes music that has withstood the test of time; it has the best of new music and the most successful mass settings and service music written since the implementation of the Revised Order of Mass in 2010. The hymnal has an expanded repertoire of music for rituals surrounding the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, funerals, weddings, Stations of the Cross and other popular forms of prayer and devotions. With an expanded repertoire of music in the Lectionary Psalter (three different settings) our hymnal helps us to meet the musical needs of our community embrace a broad range of worship styles. These include a broad range repertoire from Gregorian chant to the latest compositions from a host of publishers representing the needs of the 21st century Church, and a diversity of languages for multilingual worship services. Making this hymnal a state of the art hymnal from a host of publishers representing the needs of the 21st century church. We here at St. Clement of Rome would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the generous donors who have supported our new hymnal project by dedicating a hymnal in honor of a loved one.

Anyone volunteering in activities involving children through the church or school must attend a Safe Environment Training Session and enroll on the Archdiocese of New Orleans website before they can volunteer in any capacity at any event. Volunteers must take a session every three years. For those needed to renew their training session, this can be done online through the Archdiocese website. For any first time volunteers, you will need to attend a training session. For times and locations you may visit the archdiocesan website. If you have any questions in regards to volunteering, please contact Cynthia at the parish center (887-7821).

O LORD, BE MY HELP Today we encounter readings that draw us into the mystery of suffering and death. In the past few years we have witnessed the devastation of life and property through earthquakes and hurricanes. So many lifted their lament to God, simply asking, “Why?” This is an honest expression of anger toward a God who we believe is the giver of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why the presence of Christ is not enough to make that person rise, even from death, as did the little girl in today’s Gospel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, “Why?” At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the psalmist our own: “Hear, O Lord, and have pity on me; O Lord, be my helper.” Let us pray that our mourning will one day be turned into dancing.
