A: El uso del artículo como sustantivo (noun): Definite articles el, la, los, las

“el” + noun “el” used as a noun

Me gusta el suéter rojo.

Voy a comprar la camisa de algodón.

No me gustan los pantalones que compraste.

Me gusta el azul. (the blue one)

Voy a comprar la de nilón. (the nylon one)

No me gustan los que compraste. (the ones you bought)

OJO:

The article (el, la, los, las) replaces the noun and agrees in GENDER (M/F) & NUMBER (S/P)

Patterns:

el, la, los, las + adjective (el azul)

el, la, los, las + de + noun (la de nilón)

el, la, los, las + que + clause (verbs) (los que compraste)

Use of the neuter article “lo”: Translates to what/what is, that which

lo + adjective ¡Siempre escoges lo caro! (You always

choose what is expensive. No specific reference to what is being chosen)

lo + que (verbs) Muéstrame lo que compraste. Show me

what you bought. No specific reference to what was bought)

Lo que dices es absurdo. (What you are saying is absurd)

Use of the indefinite article as a noun: (Un, una, unos, unas)

Un + noun Un used as a noun

Felipe se prueba un pantalón azul

Clara compra una falda roja.

Juan compró un pantalón de algodón.

Jamie se prueba uno gris. (a gray one)

Inés compra una amarilla. (a yellow one)

José compró uno de pana. (a corduroy one)

OJO

The article (un, una, unos, unas) agrees with the NOUN being replaced in GENDER and NUMBER

When “un” would replace the noun, it becomes UNO

¿cuál? can be used as an adjective or as a pronoun

Adjective (introducing noun): (cuál= which)

Pronoun: replacing noun (cuál= which one)

¿Cuáles quiere comprar?

OJO

The form of cuál agrees with what is AFTER it.

Cuál + singular noun/implied sing. noun
