La función principal de este sistema es proveer de oxigeno a la sangre, y eliminar de ella el dióxido de carbono. Este aire esta formado por un 78% de nitrógeno, 21% de oxígeno, 0,03% de Dióxido de Carbono y el 0,97% restantes lo conforman otros gases.
