• “El alma que peque morirá” Ezequiel 18:20
• “The soul who sins shall die” Ezekiel 18:20
• Tiempo: Destierro (cautiverio) del reino de Judá. Cayeron en idolatría. Fueron llevados a Babilonia.
• Time: Captivity of the kingdom of Judah. Fell into idolatry. Were carried to Babylon.
• Ezequiel, joven sacerdote.
• Ezekiel, young priest. “Prophesied” = preached to the captives to avoid more apostasy. Same time as Daniel.
• So that there would be a remnant (that the nation not be completely destroyed). After 70 years of captivity they would return.
• The remnant = the Jews that we see in NT. Christ was born a Jew. Through the Jews He came to save the world.
• Each individual es responsible. Not talk only about the “nation” (or the church), but rather focus on the responsibility of each individual.
Jer. 31:29, 30. Padres tenían la culpa. Pretexto para justificarse. Cuidado con los “dichos”.
• V. 2, saying: parents ate sour grapes, children’s teeth set on edge. Jer. 31:29, 30 Parents were to blame. Excuse to justify themselves. Be careful about “sayings.”
• Oldest tactic of man. Adam and Eve started it: blame someone else. V. 3, no longer use this saying in Israel, because the children ate the same grapes their fathers ate.
• They had to understand that judgment (cap-tivity) came because of THEIR OWN SINS, so that the judgment might bear fruit: their repentance and reformation of life.
• Culpar a los padres, la iglesia, predicadores. Por eso, ¿qué? ¿Está bien no obedecer? ¿estar fuera de la iglesia? ¿ser pecador?
• Blame parents, church, preachers. Therefore what? All right to not obey? To be out of the church? To be a sinner?
• V. 4, el alma que peque, ésa morirá. 33:20; Gál. 6:5, “cada uno llevará su propia carga”; Rom. 14:12, “cada uno dará a Dios cuenta de sí mismo”. Deut. 24:16; 2 Crón 25:4.
• V. 4, the soul who sins shall die. 33:20; Gal. 6:5, “each one will bear his own load”; Rom. 14:12, “each one will give an account of himself to God. Deut. 24:16; 2 Chron. 25:4.
• What does Exodus 20:5 mean? “Visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children .. OF THOSE WHO HATE ME.” Means effects, yes, but children guilty also.
Eran responsables.
• Example of Manasseh. 2 Kings 24:3, carried to Babylon “because of the sins of Manas-seh.” He set the course but the people FOLLOWED in his sins. Were responsible.
• Muchos no aceptan esto. Culpan la socie-dad, la pobreza, el ambiente. Noticiero: “Todos matamos a Martin Luther King”. ¿Usted? Yo no.
• Many do not accept this. Blame society, poverty, environment. News: “We all killed Martin Luther King.” Did you? I didn’t!
• “No sé inglés. Me discriminaron”.
• “I don’t know English. They discriminated against me.” MUST OVERCOME! Many Hispanics, Europeans, Asiatics have over-come in the commercial, political and academic world.

• V. 10-13, 2nd generation. Did not inherit the righteousness of father. Many young people do not follow the teaching and good example of their parents.
• They themselves are responsible. Should not make foolish excuses: “they pressured me,” “they took me to church when I didn’t want to go.” They simply reject the truth.
• V. 14-18, the third generation, grandson. Is righteous. Is not like his father. Modern philosophy: man is product of society. Rather, he is what he decides to be.
• V. 19, 20 desmiente “pecado original”.
Henry Cisneros, Mayor of San Antonio, “I am a human being, not made of plastic and wires” – to justify his adultery.

• V. 21-23, God forgives. Therefore, every sinner can be righteous, but he is responsi-ble. Should not blame others nor make excuses; simply turn away from sin.
• V. 24, impossible to fall from grace? All his good works forgotten if he turns away from righteousness. Does not say self-righteous-ness, but genuine righteousness.
• V. 25, Man even blames God: The way of the Lord is not fair. To this extreme man will go to justify himself.
• V. 26-29, Yes, God is fair: condemns sin, pardons when man repents, no respecter of persons. His way is fair.
• V. 30, Therefore, I will judge each one according to his conduct (2 Cor. 5:10). So then, ought to repent, turn away from transgressions.
• V. 31, Cast away the transgressions that YOU have committed. Not cast away sin of ADAM, not cast away sin PARENTS, but what YOU YOURSELVES HAVE DONE.

• Summary: each individual responsible for his sin; no “original sin” nor “total depra-vity”; nor “unconditional election or damna-tion.”
