    Vacuum Switching

    There is a trend towards vacuum switching

    In the seventies, basic research into vacuum swit-ching was started in Germany. At that time, small-volume oil switches had become established in medi-um-voltage systems through decades of reliable ope-ration, and had become accepted by users as safeequipment. Laboratory tests revealed that vacuumswitches are in many ways superior to traditional swit-ching arrangements.

    In distribution systems, the most important criterion issafe electricity supply, and it is not high numbers ofoperating cycles but a high degree of reliability thatmatters. Even after many years of useful life, theequipment must be capable of performing makingand breaking operations safely.What is required is switching elements whose electricproperties will change as little as possible throughouttheir useful lives. Vacuum interrupters are sealed her-metically, and extremely pure materials ensure thatthe vacuum required for safe switching will be preser-ved over their entire useful lives. Even contact resi-stance will remain at very low values because in avacuum there is no oxydation process.

    The advantages of the open-air load-breaking switches Fla 15/97 over outdoor load-breaking switches with conventional arc-extinguishing media are as follows:

    faster dielectric recovery of the break distance after each breaking operation;

    high dielectric strength of the break distance;

    short total travel and, hence,

    compact drive mechanism;

    less wear on contacts and, hence

    longer useful life.

    General

    Unlike arc extinction in oil which has up to now beencustomary in outdoor load-break switches, arc interrup-tion in the newly-developed outdoor load-break switchFla 15/97 is carried out in a vacuum interrupter.

    By virtue of an insulation system developed byDriescher (patent pending), no liquid or gaseous medi-um will be required for external electric strength1) either.

    The outdoor load-break switch Fla 15/97 is thereforesuitable even for special applications (including duty inwater-conservation areas). The outdoor load-breakswitch Fla 15/97 is available for rated voltages of 12 kVto 38.5 kV, and for rated currents of 400 A and 630 A.

    Through the use of adapter parts, it will be possible touse vacuum interrupter chambers even for retrofittinginstalled equipment of the Fla 15/60 family.
