My Beloved Brothers and Sisters, As we move closer to the ordination of our own Deacon Eli Lopez to the priesthood on June 6th, I felt these word from the renowned writer and Trappist monk, Thomas Merton, would help us prepare our minds and hearts for this most special event. Merton is a profound writer; but ponder these words prayer-fully and gain a deeper understanding of the meaning of priesthood in the Church - and world - today. It has been over 30 years since a man from All Saints has been ordained to the priesthood for our archdio-cese. "The mystery of the Mass explains at once the beau-ty and the terror of the priestly vocation. A man, weak as other men, imperfect as they are, perhaps even less well endowed than many of those to whom he is sent, perhaps even less inclined to be virtuous than some of them, finds himself caught without pos-sibility of escape, between the infinite mercy of Christ and the almost infinite dreadfulness of man's sin. He cannot help but feel in the depths of his heart something of Christ's compassion for sinners, some-thing of the eternal Father's hatred of sin, something of the inexpressible love that drives the same Spirit of God to consume sin in the fires of sacrifice. At the same time he may feel in himself all the conflicts of human weakness and irresolution and dread, the an-guish of certainty and helplessness and fear, the ines-capable lure of passion. All that he hates in himself becomes more hateful to him, by reason of his close union with Christ. But also by reason of his very vo-cation he is forced to face resolutely the reality of sin in himself and in others. He is bound by his vocation to fight this enemy. He cannot avoid the battle. And it is a battle that he alone can never win. He is forced to let Christ Himself fight the enemy in him. He must do battle on the ground chosen not by himself but by Christ. That ground is the hill of Calvary and the Cross. For, to speak plainly, the priest makes no sense at all in the world except to perpetuate in it the sacrifice of the Cross, and to die with Christ on the Cross for the love of those whom God would have him save."
