MESA DE ESPECIALISTASEl 23 de enero los alumnos de preparatoria tuvieron la oportunidad de platicar directamente con personas de diferentes profesiones y compartir experiencias sobre sus carreras profesionales. Esta oportunidad les permite tener más herramientas para el proceso de decisión vocacional.

MARYMOUNT ARTS FESTIVALThe 8th Annual Marymount Arts Festival was held on February 14th with amazing performan-ces by students as well as by professional artists. The event was enriched by the enthusiasm of the students and their families. All the visitors were delighted by a variety of performances and displays in music, dance and theater. Professional artists exhibited marvelous pieces of art and students also had the opportunity to exhibit their art work.

PICNIC DEL AMOR Y LA AMISTADLos alumnos celebraron el día de San Valetin con sus compañeros y amigos, haciendo un picnic duran-te el recreo. Asimismo, se divirtieron “casándose” en el registro civil, re-galándose rosas y escuchando músi-ca de su elección.

CEREMONIA DE BECA AL MÉRITO ACADÉMICODe los más de 130 alumnos que presentaron examen de admi-sión para ingresar a 1° de secundaria, los 20 mejores resulta-dos, con promedio de 9 en inglés y en español, en 5° y en 6° de primaria recibieron el reconocimiento y Beca al Mérito Aca-démico. Felicitamos a estos 20 alumnos por este gran logro y los esperamos en Marymount para el siguiente ciclo escolar.

EUROPEAN FESTIVALThroughout the months of February and March, the seventh grade Geography teachers, Miss Damaris and Miss Nina prepa-red an activity for the students called, European Festival, whe-re the students investigated in teams interesting facts about a European country. Each team then made posters with part of the information they had gathered and decorated them with pictures showing the traditions and features of the country which might include currency, type of government, folk dress, language, music, and food, etc. In order to share with the other classrooms what they had learned, an exhibit was orga-nized during the March 11th and 12th recesses. It was a great success, and the kids commented about the fun they had lear-ning about other places and eating their delicious food.

THE 50’S PROJECTIn the month of March Miss Sue’s 11th graders experienced a blast from the past. They were able to transport themselves back to the decade of the 50’s were they were given the op-portunity to research many aspects of the history and the cul-ture of the times. The music, art, fashion, and politics, just to name a few, were integrated into projects that everyone enjo-yed. Miss Sue´s 50 ´s project was one sweet ride to the past. From poodle skirts to the Johnny Cash music that filled the air, all got the chance to experience a real 50 ´s high school.

“The 50s project, was an awesome activity from the beginning, watching the movies and making our posters, till the day at the picnic. The picnic was awesome; we listened to 50’s music, ate Rice Krispies treats and got along with all 11th grade. I think we

should repeat this project, but with another decade. It was really great. I loved it!” Ana C. Rajme

MARYMOUNT’S SPRINGCONCERTUnder the stars of a pleasant March evening, the members of Marymount’s beginning, intermediate and advanced or-chestras presented an hour and a half of pleasant music. The evening began with individual members of the orchestra pre-senting solos and ensembles.

The concert ended with the orchestras presenting the musi-cal arrangements they have been preparing over the last few months. The public was able to appreciate the hard work and skill that it takes to master such difficult instruments. Congra-tulations to Miss Yoshiko, Professor Mario and Miss Ileana for your leadership with these groups!

UN PASEO POR EL COSMOS“Recuerda que eres polvo y al polvo has de volver.” Liturgia del miércoles de ceniza.

Esta frase con la que la liturgia nos recuerda al inicio de la Cua-resma resulta sorprendente si es pronunciada por una mujer de ciencia en conferencia de astronomía dirigida a alumnos de preparatoria.

El pasado martes 27 de enero recibimos en Marymount a la Dra. Yael Naze, joven investigadora y divulgadora del Institu-to de Astrofísica, Geofísica y Oceanografía de la Universidad de Liége, Bélgica. A los 33 años cuenta ya con un grado en Ingeniería Eléctrica, un PhD en Astrofísica, varios premios y publicaciones.

Una vez plantada en el escenario con discreta simplicidad a muchos nos llevó de “Paseo por el Cosmos”, algunos la segui-mos y le agradecimos habernos entusiasmado con su pasión… otros se quedaron muy atrás, fijados en su pronunciación del idioma. La longitud del trayecto fue directamente proporcio-nal a la atención prestada, ni modo.

En un didáctico Paseo por el Cosmos nos mostró que la di-mensión material humana se entiende fácil: somos “casi” nada. Ubicado en la vastedad del cosmos cada uno de no-sotros es apenas una pequeña agregación de elementos: casi nada. Y con todo, siendo así, nuestra presencia diminuta no es in significante.

Somos nosotros los que le buscamos significado y sentido al Universo. No es Júpiter el interesado en su tamaño, ni Satur-no el que se precia de su hermosura; ni al Sol le interesa su enorme dimensión frente a la de sus súbditos planetas, ni que, comparada con la de otros soles finalmente es mínima. Somos nosotros los que buscamos, los que nos deleitamos, los que quedamos insatisfechos del límite.

¿Acaso somos los únicos de este universo en esta actividad? Ella nos recordó que negarlo es tan imprudente como afirmar-lo, pues no tenemos elementos suficientes; lo cierto es que, es todavía más impropio minusvalorar nuestra presencia redu-ciéndonos a un punto insignificante y sin sentido.

A decir de la Dra. Yael debemos atender al hecho de que toda la materia del Universo fue generada en la brillantes Nebu-losas, matrices estelares, de modo que ciertamente nuestro cuerpo está formado por partes de estrellas y algún día estos mismos formarán otras: “recuerda que eres polvo de estrellas y que a ser polvo de ellas volverás”.

Esto es verdad; pero también nos mostró, con ella misma, que somos más.

Había que atender a su pasión por desentrañar los secretos de lo que atrapa su mirada, por llegar al fondo del Cosmos de-leitándose en la contemplación del transcurso; con la sencilla humildad de reconocer cuando todavía no hay una respuesta pero allí sigue estando intrigante el hecho que invita a ser des-cubierto. Esto no lo hace una agregación de polvo.

Su presencia en Marymount fue una ocasión para reconocer que ciertamente la falta de explicación científica no es obje-ción para deleitarse en la belleza de la realidad y que más bien es provocación a descubrirla. Tirando por tierra cualquier aso-mo de arrogancia mostró que no es la posesión intelectual de las cosas, que las instrumentaliza para el provecho contable, lo que hace que las descubramos bellas, ni lo que nos engran-dece, ni lo que hace descansar nuestro corazón.

Que haya sido este otro motivo para despertar en nuestros alumnos su hambre de Infinito.

Tonathiu Liévano ganó el 1er lugar -Medalla de Oro- en la Olimpiada Nacional de Biología. Muchas felicidades por este gran logro y también a su maestra Elizabeth Woodhouse.

Diego Morett Aguilar obtuvo medalla de plata en el nivel B en la XVIII Olimpiada Nacional de Química. Muchas felicidades y también a su profesor Eduardo García.

Los siguientes alumnos de secundaria y preparatoria fueron seleccionados en la primera fase de la XXIII Olimpiada de Matemáticas en el Estado de Morelos. Estos mucha-chos recibirán entrenamiento especial en el Instituto de Mate-máticas de la UNAM (Campus UAEM).

Los equipos de baloncesto, voleibol y fútbol de secundaria participaron el 12, 13 y 14 de febrero en el Campeonato Inter - Nuevo Continentes, donde participaron equipos de Celaya, León, Querétaro, D.F. y Cuernavaca, ob-teniendo los siguientes resultados.

El pasado mes de octubre, la compañía de teatro del colegio participó en el Shakespeare Schools Festival, el cual se llevó a cabo en el Instituto Anglo Mexicano de la Ciudad de México. Tanto los directivos de The Anglo Mexican Foundation como Giles Ramsay, destacado director de teatro inglés, que-daron gratamente impresionados con la puesta en escena de la obra Much ado about nothing, de William Shakespeare, y el excelente trabajo de todos los alumnos. El Sr. Ramsay ha pro-ducido obras para el Festival de Teatro de Edimburgo durante varios años y, en asociación con The Anglo, lleva cada año a una compañía de teatro mexicana como parte de un proyecto

llamado MEXART. La compañía de teatro del colegio fue elegi-da para ser el grupo que representará a México en Edimburgo el próximo mes de agosto como proyecto MEXART 2009.

Muchas gracias a todos los alumnos de teatro por su dedica-ción y trabajo durante tantas horas extras dedicadas a ensa-yos. Este viaje será un merecido reconocimiento a su talento y esfuerzo. Tuve la suerte de ser parte del torneo de “tochito” ya que además de ser espectadora, también formé parte de la porra del equipo de Ciencias. Fue maravilloso estar en el recreo com-partiendo la alegría y la pasión que se desbordaba en cada una de las jugadas. El ambiente que había en las tribunas era fabu-loso. Es innegable que además de ser estudiantes, los mucha-chos son excelentes deportistas. Felicidades a los campeones de 11vo y felicidades a todos los que participaron ya que al final, todos salimos ganando. ACCESO ALa consulta de información en MARYnet cada vez va incre-mentando, lo cual fortalece la comunicación entre la comu-nidad. La última semana de febrero enviamos una circular a cada familia de acuerdo al número de accesos que tuvieron en el primer semestre de este ciclo escolar. A 112 familias, que entraron más de 15 veces, les enviamos una felicitación. A otras familias, que entraron de 1 a 14 veces, les invitamos a utilizarlo más y a las 112 familias que no habían entrado les dimos nuevamente sus contraseñas para que empiecen a utilizar MARYnet como medio de comunicación.

SENIOR REFLECTIONS OF AN UNFORGETTABLE DAY WITH THE CHILDREN OF THE “JORNALEROS”Since 2001 seniors have been visiting the “La Brasilera” camp where the migrant workers from Guerrero pick okra and string beans. The purpose of the visit is to interact with the babies and children who are cared for by a dedicated group of ca-regivers and teachers while their parents are in the fields all day. Part of the yearly activity is to deliver a special collection of personal hygiene products and clothing. The day includes a “tour” of the living quarters of the migrant workers where 10 families live together in a shed the size of a classroom. The tour also includes the day care center and the open air classro-oms where classes are in session. Then the fun begins. Taking over 40 students on two different occasions to interact with the children each year is an incredible experience as each and every one of them find their job, either bathing the children and babies, playing football, flying a kite, coloring, dressing them, styling their hair with the new accessories or just giving lots of hugs. It is heartwarming to receive so many smiles of

gratitude and friendship. This yearly visit to “La Brasilera” was truly a life changing experience for many as their personal reflections confirm below:

“I had the opportunity to bathe three babies, something that I had never done before, and it was a great experience in spite of the loud crying and the many tears…It had helped us all be more conscious of a reality that a large portion of our society has to live with every day.” Maria Heredia

TU ACCIÓN Y TU ACTITUD SONIMPORTANTES El Comité de Ecología del Marymount integrado por algunas mamas voluntarias han desarrollado la campaña de recolección de PET el último jueves de cada mes.

Por ser el PET un plástico de alta calidad, no tóxico y muy ligero, que se fabrica a partir de derivados del petróleo, es un producto de

consumo cotidiano muy utilizado como recipiente de alimen-tos, medicamentos, productos de limpieza, y bebidas . . .

Debido al gran volumen que se genera, se ha convertido en un problema de contaminación.

De acuerdo con cifras del Instituto Mexicano del Plástico In-dustrial (IMPI), cada año se producen en el país 800,000 to-neladas de productos con polietilentereftalato (PET), de las

cuales se recolectan 250,000 y, de éstas, apenas se reciclan en territorio nacional 50,000; las 200,000 restantes se exportan a China y a otros países, a un precio promedio de 3 pesos por kilo de PET acopiado. Sin embargo cuando se separa el PET de “la basura” se puede reciclar, y con él fabricar relleno para almohadas, tapabocas, sleeping bags, chamarras, peluches, hilo para alfombras, telas, calzado deportivo, etc. Así como también la elaboración de materia prima para la fabricación de nuevos envases, láminas, tablas, flejes, partes de auto-móviles y otros más- eliminar.

Una botella de PET puede tardar 500 años en degradarse den-tro de un tiradero.

Para reciclar el PET lo primero que se tiene que hacer es sepa-rarlo del resto de los residuos sólidos generados diariamente. Con esta pequeña acción, no solo contribuyes a reducir la can-tidad de basura, también el dinero que se obtiene de su venta se destina para apoyar las actividades de servicio social que realiza la escuela.

TODDLERS 1 Los alumnos de Toddlers 1 mostraban cierta resistencia para viajar en carro sentados en silla de seguridad, por lo que Miss Thania pidió a los papás que por las mañanas dejaran su si-llita en la escuela. Con las sillitas jugamos a ir de paseo en carro y todos disfrutamos viajar sentados en nuestras sillitas, así aprendimos a cuidar nuestro cuerpo. Ahora cuando mamá llega por nosotros nos sentamos y abrochamos nuestro cintu-rón sin resistencia.

TODDLERS 2 Los pequeños de Toddlers 2 están aprendiendo a dejar el pañal. Felicitamos a los niños que ya lograron el control de esfínteres.

Pre-Kinder Los alumnos de Prekinder sembraron semillas de fríjol. Dia-riamente están regando y cuidando sus semillas, por lo que ¡pronto estarán cosechando!

EL TALLER DE COCINA

Una de las actividades que más disfrutan los niños son los talleres, a través de los cuales pueden explorar y experimentar di-ferentes áreas de aprendizaje.

En el taller de cocina, los alumnos han explorado diversos in-gredientes, realizado tortugas de mango, decorándolas con cerezas y fresas. De esta misma forma han aprendido a contar, a medir ingredientes, a probar diferentes sabores, a conocer nuevas palabras, a convivir con sus compañeros, a compartir y dar gracias. Definitivamente, el taller de cocina es una gran experiencia de aprendizaje para los chiquitos, que además de ser divertida es muy significativa para ellos.

“To cheat or not to cheat; that is the question. Whether tis no-bler in the mind to suffer the agony and punishment of failing or to take arms against the abyss of failure, and by cheating avoid it? To spy, to peek, no more; and by a peek to say we look at the test behind, beside, or in front of us. To pass is a requirement, and the temptation tis all consuming. It is devoutly to wish in passing and succeeding. To pass, to peek.”

This is how my internal Hamlet would sound in a situation where I would find myself at a crossroad; the easy but dangerous road, or the hard but safe road. To risk everything, to obtain everything or not to risk anything and maybe obtain nothing is a dilemma. It is to be in a posi-tion in which you can lose it all in order to get what you want or simply try and get what you want without risking anything. The temptation is great, and the outcome can either be great or fatal.

To cheat or not to cheat; that is not only the question, but it is also a decision that, if made incorrectly, could change the destiny of whoever makes it. It is not only a question, but simply a risk that later becomes a reflex and finally ends up as a way of life. To cheat, to run without having walked before, to gasp without having to breathe. Not to cheat, to learn, to succeed, to experience, to know, to say, to have. Two directions, two endings, one dilemma.

On the one hand, doubt and uncertainty roaming through my thoughts, pressure and tempta-tion using their oldest tricks to make me fall, to make me cheat. On the other hand, success and self esteem convincing me to take the correct but winding road. To cheat or not to cheat; that question does not leave my mind; that question is present everywhere, and the choice between the two options is difficult to make. To cheat, to depend. Not to cheat, to be independent.

After deep contemplation and meditation, I have decided not to cheat. I decide to face whate-ver has to come, to have my faith depend on what I know and not know instead of leaving it all to luck. To know I did my best will be more gratifying than passing; to know I did it by myself will be even better. Even though cheating is the easy way out, and most of the time gives you a nice result, the risk of failing still exists. Therefore, my decision is made: not to cheat.Mateo Hernández Romieu, 12B2

Angel Fernando Lara Moreira es un ex-alumno del Colegio Marymount graduado en la generación de 2006. Actualmente estudia el sexto semestre de la carrera de arquitectura en la UNAM. El próximo año escolar se va de intercambio a Francia en “Ecole Nationale Superieure d Architecture Paris-Belleville”.

Ángel realizó un proyecto llamado DENLASarq, con el cual ganó el tercer lugar en el concurso interno “Capdevielle” del taller Jorge González Reyna.

Se trataba de un concurso abierto, que consistía principalmente en intervenir de cualquier for-ma la calle de Francisco Sosa en Coyoacán, con el fin de regenerar el ambiente y promover que la gente concurriera nuevamente en esta zona de la ciudad.

La calle de Francisco Sosa es una calle de gran carácter colonial y es la mas antigua de America Latina, por lo que la intervención realizada tenía que ser cuidadosa del contexto cultural que conlleva, pero ser capaz de estimular la imaginación del peatón y crear un nuevo corredor que no pretende otra cosa más que ser apreciado y recorrido.

"El concepto nace al visitar la calle y darnos cuenta de la gran cantidad de árboles que hay en ella. Un sistema emergente que cubre al peatón y al automóvil. Crear una nueva capa para re-lacionar de mejor manera el suelo-el árbol-el cielo. La idea principal parte de otorgar al sistema ,natural establecido, una estructura por la cual pueda llevarse a cabo un nuevo crecimiento, generando así una capa nueva en la calle. La vegetación con el tiempo, crecerá por la estructura dada y hará suyo el lugar. La luz que se filtra a través de ella, sirve para dar un respiro a la gente, y para recordarnos que existe algo más en ella.

La incorporación de luminarias en la estructura cumple con el propósito de re-animar la escena cultural nocturna, perdida hace algún tiempo y hacer que la noche se vuelve a su vez un ele-mento protagónico vivo." Ángel Lara Moreira
