tRAVELOGUE 15SOS JOURNAL 1/0914
Benno Neeleman, a professional photographer from the Netherlands, and his faithful companion, his camera, are constantly travelling the world – also on behalf of SOS Children‘s Villages. this time Mr Neeleman did not just capture the faces of happy children. In November 2008 he visited a refugee camp in Chad where SOS Children‘s Villages cares for traumatised children. this time he has made an exception and also uses words to describe what he has seen. the unabridged report of the journey has been published on the website of SOS-Kinderdorf International.
We have landed on a narrow strip of sand in the middle of an endless desert. We stay in the guest house of the UN World Food Programme – hotels are scarce here.
refugee camp on this spot in particular was its water supplies.SOS Children‘s Villages was asked to start a project to deal with potential mental problems in children. And there are many such problems here! The story of twelve-year old Housna is not an exception. Until 2004 she lived in a peaceful little village which was suddenly attacked one day by rebels on horses and she was firedatfromabove.Manyinhabitantswerekilledwhileothersfledthevillageinpanic. So did Housna‘s father. Since that day she hasn‘t heard anything from him.
Only a small number of the inhabitants of this usually quiet little villagemanagedtoflee.Housna, hermother, hergrandmotherand her four brothers and sisters arrived at the camp in a wret-ched state. On the day of their arrival Housna‘s mother, who was seriously ill, died. Housna does not want to talk about the past; she only does so once a week with the psychiatrist provided by SOS Children‘s Villages. This takes a great deal of effort and, most of all, many, many tears. I meet Housna in a small class room, together with 40 other school children. The teacher is full of praise for her: "She likes mathematics in particular! When she grows up she wants to become a doctor in order to help sick people!”
The SOS Children‘s Village project is extremely important for childrenlikeHousna.Meanwhile400childrenarebeingcaredfor,200ofthemhavebeenorphanedontheirflightfromDarfur.In the tent next door Silvie, a psychiatrist, talks to a girl who is no older than sixteen. She wants to get the girl to talk about the experiences she had four years ago. The child starts to cry. "They must continue to talk about it", says Silvie. "It is the only chance for the children to overcome these experiences and to learn how to live with them! But they will never forget them!"
The next day is the Universal Children‘s Day. Outdoor games, competitions, hang gliding and a drawing competition are organised for the older children. The winning picture, drawn by a child aged about twelve, depicts a burning village, an airplane aboveit, rebelsfiringtheirguns, tanksandpeoplefleeing!"It is extremely important for the children that we continue workinghere",saysAbdelkerimMahamat, thedirectorofSOSChildren‘s Villages Chad.
In spite of war and misery, one thing always remains the same in the desert: the wonderful starry sky at night. I go out and stare at the stars for a long time.

ThE BrAND BOOK
The corporate brand encompasses more than just the logo and the claim. It includes the way we describe or present ourselves as well as the organisation in all its areas of work. Based on the mission statement "Who We Are", the Brand Book, issued on the occasion of the 18th General Assembly in July 2008, illustrates our corpo-rate brand and gives fi rst examples of possible implementation. The Brand Book also contains the most relevant visual elements,
which are to be developed further by the general secretariat and national associations in order to deliver a common message.
In other words, the corporate brand is a framework for the areas Programme Development, Human Resources and Organisational Development, Fund development and Corporate Communication, Operations and others to communicate the competencies and the social meanings of the organisation. The corporate brand will be implemented step by step using a common tool, the Brand Design Manual.
ThE BrAND DESIgN MANUAL UNITy IN ThE DIVErSITy
The Brand Design Manual is being developed by SOS-Kinderdorf International’s Communications Department with the support of an external agency. Graphics, photographs and other visual elements that are to be combined with the texts and logo will be accompanied with recommendations regarding their use in online and offl ine publications. The aim of the Brand Design Manual is to provide visual consis-tency, make the organisation recognisable for external stakehol-ders and shape its image and reputation. At the same time, the Brand Design Manual should allow freedom for creativity in all the different cultural backgrounds of the national associations, thus emphasising the quality of relationships between the parts or units of the organisation. The release of the long awaited Brand Design Manual is planned for April 2009.
FIrST STEpS TOWArDS IMpLEMENTATION
In the meantime, several national associations have taken up the task of harmonising the visuals of their brand according to the guidelines given in the Brand Book. For example the Austrian association: At the beginning of November 2008 SOS Children’s Villages Austria decided to use the colour green as main colour. For all things to be ordered in the future (stationery, business cards, logos for cars…), the new logo will be used. During the year 2009 all things will be changed gradually, i.e. old stationery etc won‘t be thrown away but will be used up. SOS Austria‘s stationery more or less stayed the same, with the new colour and logo being integrated. (dd)
BrANDIMpLEMENTATION
The BrandBook, which was presented at the
general Assembly in July 2008, will be followed
by concrete steps: the publication of a Brand
Design Manual and the implementation of the
brand content by national associations.

"If you don‘t know it, you wouldn‘t recognize the SOS Children‘s Village at all, because it is so well integrated into the surroun-ding area", Leonard Diergaardt says proudly. For instance, the playground is situated outside the grounds of the SOS Children‘s Village and the houses – four prototypes which each have been used three times – are all very individual. Leonard Diergaardt is convinced that this variety helps the SOS families to turn their houses into their homes. "It gives them the feeling of ‚this is my home, the place where I belong‘. This is good for the self-esteem of both the SOS mothers and the children. They can be proud of ‚their‘ home."
This also means that the SOS mothers are responsible for their own budget, that they themselves decide how to furnish their homes and what kind of support they need – whether a window needs to be fi xed or whether one of the children needs help at
school. "This is what the SOS Children‘s Village Manual says", explains Leonard Diergaardt, "Standard 2: The SOS mother leads the SOS family." The SOS mother also decides whom she wants to ask for help. "Respect for older people is deeply rooted in our culture", adds Leonard Diergaardt. "An SOS mother may someti-mes prefer to ask an older colleague rather than our social worker. We consider it very important to work in a culturally sensitive way."
This open concept was developed on the basis of the exemplary pilot project that had been implemented in SOS Children‘s Village Nelspruit. The results of the study "Tracking Footprints" in which adults report on the time they lived in the SOS Children‘s Village were included as well. Leonard Diergaardt: "Once again it beca-me clear that the children don‘t want to be referred to as "SOS Children‘s Village children". In Odangwa, their friends who are living on the other side of the street may or may not be children from the SOS Children‘s Village."
Despite the great success and many positive reactions, there is still something that makes Leonard Diergaardt worry: "An SOS Children‘s Village like Odangwa is more vulnerable than conven-tional SOS Children‘s Villages. Twelve single women, no man in the house – that‘s like a water hole for the lion. I hope that our SOS mothers are safe from attacks. On the other hand, our con-cept might also be very interesting for couples. We could give it a try here. Our development has defi nitely not ended yet…" (kd)

60yEARS OF SOS CHILDREN´S VILLAGES
EDItORIAL 5SOS JOURNAL 1/094
In 1949 Hermann Gmeiner felt the urgent need to do something for the children in postwar Austria. The children were the most vulnerable victims of this time in which resources were scarce and many people did not even have enough for themselves. He was so convinced that it was necessary to help the children that he managed to convince many people of his simple idea to share thelittletheyhadtobuildthefirstthreehousesinImst.
The rest, as they say, is history. We can all be proud and grateful for what many people have built over the years on the found-ationthatHermannGmeinerleftus.HestartedthefirstSOSChildren’s Village family during a much more challenging time than the current global economic crises might ever develop into. And he succeeded!
Keeping the early years in mind, 2009 will be a year in which we raise our voices more than ever for the children who need us - because they do need us, probably even more than before in the context of a global crisis. And if we do it with inner convic-tion, our success in convincing many more friends to help will equal that of Hermann Gmeiner some 60 years ago.
Our 60th anniversary is the perfect occasion to tell the story of our children to many people who shall become friends – special anniversary friends as part of ONE million friends for ONE million children. This anniversary year gives every country the opportunity to go out and ask people to help. Let’s make use of it with all our creativity and we will celebrate our anniversary with more friends than ever.
Of course, our work is affected by the economic crisis. I thank all co-workers around the world who showed tremendous
solidarityinthelastmonthsinordertoadjusttoourfinancialpossibilities in 2009. We are also grateful that our donors remain loyal in rough times. With the support and commitment from co-workers and donors we can manage to continue our work and even help a slightly higher number of children.
A critical phase like this also gives us the opportunity to experience the strength of the solidarity between our member associations in 132 countries as ONE movement. No matter how hard a particular country is hit by the crisis, we must make sure that we get through these tough times together under ONE roof. Our strategy ONE child, ONE friend, and ONE movement helps us set priorities, especially in times like these. And we are alrea-dy preparing to help more children as we receive more support from our friends.
One of the consequences of the global economic crisis is that we will start to save printing costs in the General Secretariat. We use this as an opportunity to develop the SOS Journal as anonlinepublicationforourco-workers.Thefinancialcrisischallengesustobecreativeinfindingnewwaystodoourworkinamoreefficientwaywithoutloosingsightofqualityandthechildren we work for.
I am looking forward to a successful anniversary year, at the end of which we will be helping more children with more friends in ONE SOS Children’s Village movement.

Infantiles SOS hacia adentro y hacia afuera.
