Teacapn is a poor fishing village about 60 miles south of Mazatlan. With minimal infrastructure and fishingin decline, they are unable to adequately fund their schools or medical clinic. But a group of vacationinggringos formed a group in 2000 to help the town. They call themselves Amigos de Teacapn. Throughdonations and fundraisers, they have been able to help the schools purchase needed supplies and evenpay for the college education of three villagers. They have also helped the medical clinic install plumbingand purchase supplies such as oxygen and medicine. And they arranged for a group of volunteer dentists to

examine and treat 1200 school children last year. The Amigos system is based on helping the people helpthemselves, and it is working.

    Friends of Teacapn

Teacapn is a small fishing village situated at the mouth of an estuary that flows into the ocean. With fishingin decline, the people are very poor. Although the town's ambience and amenities are below the acceptablelevel for most beach vacationers, the miles of unspoiled beaches and the open, friendly townsfolk do attracta certain kind of visitor. Moving beyond the usual pursuits of sun, seashore and cheap beer, an unlikelygroup of gringos saw the problems of the town and decided to form a group to help the people helpthemselves. They call their group Amigos de Teacapn.

Amigos initially focused on issues like reducing litter and rescuing stray dogs, but soon realized that thetownsfolk had other concerns. They worried about the kind of education their children were receiving, andfamilies lacked the means to send their promising sons and daughters on to college. Their medical clinicwas severely undersupplied and had no plumbing. There was no dental clinic at all.

Amigos de Teacapn devised a system for raising money based on donations and fundraisers. Oneinnovative and successful idea involves having southbound members, who often return year after year, cram their motorhomes with clothes, school supplies, appliances, bicycles and more. They then hold a yardsale where the locals buy the goods for a reasonable price. All the money then goes into a general accountused to address the needs of their schools, fund an adult basic education program, or supplement medicaland scholarship programs.

To date, the monies gathered from all sources have made possible the purchase of many school supplies, and have built a classroom for special education children. The funds are supporting three college studentsand have made it possible for the medical clinic to acquire oxygen, medicine, and other necessary items. The clinic has also been able to install plumbing. A group of volunteer dentists, based in Boston, examinedand treated 1200 school children last year, and have plans to establish a permanent clinic.

Amigos de Teacapn offers the rare example of a group of vacationers who looked beyond their privatepleasures and saw a town in need, and decided to do something about it. They see themselves asfacilitators that help the townsfolk meet their goals. It is a system based on mutual respect and it is working.
