Some more of Father Tom’s scattered thoughts….. My dear Parishioners, 1. Today is the First Sunday of Advent. The term Advent comes from two Latin words……

Ad - Ventus or Ad-Venire, which simply means “to arrive” or “to come” respectively. 2. It marks the beginning of the Church’s liturgical calendar. It is the four week period

leading to Christmas. For us Christians and Catholics in particular, this is a time of expectation and preparation for the Lord’s birth.

3. During Advent, the Church makes an appeal for an improvement in our lives and it calls

us to make a fresh start at building a closer relationship with Christ. 4. Advent gives us an opportunity to look around at what needs to be put right, to see how we

have failed and to assess the ways in which we can do better. Prayers, Penance and Works of Mercy are necessary preparations for God’s coming. There are many ways in which all of us can improve. Advent is above all a time to deepen our friendship with God by thinking and being thankful of His great love for us in sending His only Son as our Savior. It is only fitting that in return we should show our love for Him.

5. Today’s Gospel reminds us of something very important….. TO BE AWAKE AND

WATCHFUL. It is a call to intensify and strengthen our prayer life. May our Lord find us awake and ready when He comes in Glory.

Guess Who’s Coming to St. Felicitas?

St. Nicholas will be visiting the children in our parish this Sunday, December 2nd after the 9.00 am and 10.30 am Masses.

First Friday - December 7th : Adoration in the St. Joseph’s Chapel from 12:30 pm to 4.45 pm. Come spend sometime with our Blessed Lord.

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saturday, December 8th,

is a Holy Day of Obligation.

We will have two Masses - a Vigil Mass on Friday, December 7th at 7.00 pm and on Saturday, December 8th,

Mass at 8.15 am.

The Saturday evening Mass (Vigil) does not count toward the fulfillment of the obligation.

Poinsettias for our Christmas Altar

If you would like to contribute a Poinsettia in memory of your loved one and make the Sanctuary more beautiful during the Christmas Celebrations this year, there are special envelopes available in the vestibule of the Church. You may write the name of your loved one and drop it in the collection basket on Sunday. All donations must be received by December 14th.

Advent Reconciliation Service

Our Parish Communal Penance Service will be Tuesday, December 18th, 2018 at 7:00 pm There will be several priests available to

hear confessions in English, Spanish, Vietnamese and Filipino

Contribution Envelopes for 2019 are now in the Vestibule for pick up. A big “thank you” to all who helped.

We ask that all parishioners pick up the envelopes as soon as possible. Thank you!!

THE RITE OF WELCOME/ACCEPTANCE

The initial phase of the RCIA will be moving into the second stage as our participants go

through the “Rite of Acceptance” (for the unbaptized) and the “Rite of Welcome” (those seeking full communion with the Church)

These Rites will take place on Sunday, December 2nd at the 10.30 am Mass. The participants are now ready to publicly declare their intention to continue their journey toward becoming Catholics. At this Rite, they are asked to more fully embrace the Gospel message and they will be signed with the Cross to show that they now belong to Christ.

We welcome you to take an active role in welcoming our catechumens and candidates, in praying for them as they now enter into a period of deeper formation in the RCIA Process.

Youth Choir on Sunday, December 16th

We welcome youth of all ages from our parish and neighboring communities! Requirement: can sing basic tune, attend at least one 7pm rehearsal (Mon 12/10 or Wed 12/12), and meet at 10 am on Sunday December 16th.

EXPANDIENDO NUESTRA VISIÓN

En nuestra rutina de todos los días, es bien fácil enfocarnos en el aquí y ahora. La vida puede ser compleja y cambiar con rapidez. Frecuentemente, tenemos más que suficiente durante el día para irlo pasando. Sin embargo, parece que, en el Evangelio de Lucas de hoy, Jesús está pidiendo a sus seguidores, y a nosotros también, expandir nuestro objetivo y ver de una manera más amplia la realidad.

Se nos pide observar no solo las rutinas de la vida diaria, no solamente las fuerzas de la histo-ria afectándonos, sino también a Dios ofreciéndonos el nacimiento de una nueva creación. Jesús nos pide ver más allá de los problemas de hoy y ver a Dios levantar nuestra esperanza. Estamos para ver más verdaderamente a personas necesitadas, aquellas que sufren a causa de la violencia, la pérdida o la injusticia. Se nos pide ver más allá de lo superficial durante el tiempo de compras navideñas, y que veamos a Cristo como el principal regalo y dador de re-galos. Ngày 8/12 - Ðức Maria Vô Nhiễm Nguyên Tội

Ngay từ những thế kỷ đầu, Giáo Hội đã hân hoan chúc tụng với niềm tin tưởng vào chức vị cao trọng của Mẹ. Nhưng Giáo Hội phải trải qua một thời gian lâu dài, để dần dần khám phá ra những kỳ công của ân sủng gói ghém qua lời Kinh hằng được van xin trên môi

miệng của các tín hữu. Thánh Irênê đã cảm thấy trước đặc ân Vô Nhiễm Nguyên Tội của Mẹ khi ngài ca ngợi Mẹ là "Evà mới". Mãi tới thế kỷ XV, chúng ta mới thấy Giáo Hội diễn tả trong phụng vụ "Thiên Chúa đã dọn cho Con Ngài một chỗ ở xứng đáng nhờ đặc ân Vô Nhiễm Nguyên Tội của Ðức Trinh Nữ. Mẹ được giữ sạch không vương chút tội lỗi nhờ vào ân sủng do cuộc tử nạn của Chúa Giêsu", và Ðức Giáo Hoàng Piô IX đã lập lại những ý tưởng đó khi long trọng công bố tín điều Mẹ Vô Nhiễm (08/12/1854). Với đắc ân Vô Nhiễm, Mẹ không phải chỉ được giữ sạch, không chút tội lỗi, mà Mẹ còn được tràn đầy ơn phước: Thiên Chúa đã đổ tràn muôn hồng ân cho Mẹ, đã phủ kín gấu áo Mẹ bằng một vẻ trắng trong tinh tuyền. Cũng như đặc ân lên trời, sự Vô Nhiễm bắt nguồn từ chức vụ Mẹ Thiên Chúa. Và cũng như đặc ân lên trời, với Sự Vô Nhiễm Nguyên Tội, Mẹ chính là hình ảnh của Giáo Hội: Thiên Chúa đã gìn giữ Giáo Hội, hiền thê của Ngài, không tì ố, rực sáng vẻ đẹp thánh thiện và Vô Nhiễm.

Xin cho mọi người dấn thân trong việc truyền bá đức tin, trong việc đối thoại với văn hóa, tìm được một ngôn từ rao giảng thích hợp với hoàn cảnh hiện nay.

TỈNH THỨC VÀ CẦU NGUYỆN

Mùa Vọng là mùa chờ đón Chúa đến. Chúa sẽ đến nhưng ta không chắc gặp được Người. Vì Người đến rất bất ngờ và rất âm thầm. Muốn gặp được Chúa ta phải tỉnh thức. Tỉnh thức có nghĩa là đừng mê ngủ. Chúa thường hay đến vào ban đêm, nghĩa là vào lúc ta không ngờ. Ðời sống có những bóng đêm ru ta ngủ say mê khiến ta không gặp được Người. Có những bóng đêm của tội lỗi giam cầm hồn ta trong giấc ngủ bạc nhược khiến ta không còn đủ sức thoát ra. Tội lỗi lôi kéo tội lỗi. Tội lỗi chồng chất giống như những tảng đá gìm ta xuống vực sâu vô tận. Có những bóng đêm của danh vọng ru hồn ta ngủ quên trên vinh quang chói ọi. Vinh quang giống như ngọn đèn đốt cháy biết bao đời thiêu thân. Có những bóng đêm của xác thịt cuốn hồn ta vào giấc mộng lạc thú. Lạc thú giống như chiếc lưới rất mềm mại, rất nhẹ nhàng, nhưng rất hiểm độc. Linh hồn đã sa vào khó có thể thoát ra. Có những bóng đêm của thói ích kỷ chỉ biết sống cho bản thân mình. Ích kỷ giống như một hang sâu, càng đi vào càng thấy tối tăm. Có những bóng đêm của tiền tài bao phủ ta trong giấc mộng giàu sang phú quí. Chìm đắm trong giấc mộng, ta sẽ chẳng nghe được bước chân của Chúa đi qua.
