La Laura i en Joan es

trobaven en un homenatge

que s’organitzava a la

Fatarella als darrers aviadors

vius que havien format part

del vesper de la Gloriosa,

o el que és el mateix, de

l’aviació republicana als

camps del Penedès.

Hi havien anat a entrevistar

els darrers aviadors

supervivents del vesper,

que havien lluitat en aquella

terrible guerra que ens va

sacsejar i trasbalsar: la

Guerra Civil.

Laura and Joan were at an event in the town of La Fatarella which had been organised to pay tribute to the last living pilots who had been part of the Vesper de la Gloriosa, or the ‘Hive of the Glorious’, which is how the Republican Air Force which had its bases in the fields of the El Penedès region was known.

They had gone to interview the ‘hive’s’ last surviving pilots, who had fought in that terrible war that had brought us so much upheaval: the Spanish Civil War.

—S’havia de ser valent per pilotar un xato –els va lloar la Laura per trencar el gel i

convidar-los a explicar la seva experiència, per veure si així recordaven algun indret

interessant en el qual excavar quan anessin al camp d’aviació dels Monjos.

—No cal que ho diguis, nena. Només de pensar-hi em vénen calfreds! Pensa que amb

els xatos podíem fer un gir de 360 graus en tan sols vuit segons.

—Uf, ara mateix tornaria a pujar al meu mosca! M’encantava sentir la velocitat dels seus

464 quilòmetres per hora. Tot i que hauria de posar-me gomina, si no em despentinaria

—els va fer broma en Pere, que era totalment calb.

—No siguis ganàpia, Pere! Si ara tornessis a volar a la velocitat màxima dels mosques,

de la tremolor se’t

desenroscarien

els cargols de la

dentadura postissa

—li va etzibar

en Joan Carles,

provocant una gran

riallada general.

‘You had to be really brave to fly a plane like those snub-nosed I-15s,’ said Laura, approvingly, trying to break the ice and invite them to talk about their experience. She was interested in finding out if they remembered any particular spots that would be worth investigating when they went to the airfield in Els Monjos.

‘You don’t need to tell us that, lass. Just thinking about it gives me the shivers! Imagine: we could do a 360-degree turn in only twenty seconds when we flew one of those.’

‘Uff, I’d take my I-16 to the sky right now if I could! I loved feeling those speeds of 464 kilometres per hour. Although I’d have to put some hair gel on to stop my hair getting messy now,’ joked Pere, who was completely bald.

Pere could not have agreed more with Joan Carles: he could not believe that he had been able to go to war at such a young age, flying a Polikarpov I-15, no less. And not just because those planes were amazingly strong compared to those made today, but because he had dropped everything to go and fight for his ideals.

‘How did it feel to live through the Battle of the Ebro from up there in your plane?’

‘Well, really exciting, on the one hand, but, well, I don’t mind telling you I was scared out of my wits as well.’

‘At some point it felt like we’d never be able to beat the enemy; there were so many of them…’

‘Yeah, it wasn’t for nothing that they called their Air Force the Numerosa, “the numerous”. But if they were the Numerosa, then we couldn’t be anything less, so we called ourselves the Gloriosa. The Glorious! You see! Even in times of war, we managed to keep our sense of humour.’

‘What Pere’s just said is right. The enemy’s air force was much bigger than ours. What’s more, we’d already lost a lot of battles during the war and so we weren’t feeling all that optimistic.’

‘And as if that wasn’t enough, Franco’s side were being supported by Hitler’s Nazi regime, who gave them German planes because they wanted to be friends with Franco’s lot.’

‘Nasty piece of work that Hitler…’, Joan Carles reminded them all.

En Pere no podia estar més

d’acord amb en Joan Carles:

es feia creus que de tan jove

hagués pogut anar a la guerra

volant en un xato. I no tan

sols perquè aquells avions

eren ben bé un tros de ferralla

comparats amb els d’ara, sinó

perquè ho havia deixat tot per

defensar els seus ideals.

—Com vas viure la batalla de

l’Ebre damunt del teu mosca?

—En part exaltat i, per què no

dir-ho, una mica escagarrinat.

—En alguns moments ens

semblava que no podríem

fer gaire res per guanyar els

nostres enemics. Eren tants...

—Per alguna cosa a la seva aviació li deien la Numerosa. Ara, que si

ells eren la Numerosa, nosaltres no volíem ser menys, així que ens fèiem dir la

Gloriosa. Ja ho veieu, fins i tot a les guerres hi ha un cert sentit de l’humor.

—Sí, el que us diu en Pere és cert. L’aviació de l’altre bàndol era molt més nombrosa

que la nostra. A més, a la guerra ja havíem perdut massa batalles i no podíem ser

gaire optimistes.

—I a sobre el bàndol franquista tenia l’ajuda del règim nazi de Hitler. Els regalaven

avions alemanys perquè es volien fer amiguets amb el bàndol de Franco.

—Mala peça al teler, aquell Hitler... —recordà en Joan Carles.

En Joan i la Laura

estaven plens d’emoció

d’haver conegut dues

persones tan valentes que

tenien tantes coses per

explicar, però havien d’anar

per feina, si no els seus

poders màgics s’esvairien en

un tres i no res i no podrien

participar en la recerca

d’arqueologia de guerra. Per

tant, es van disposar a anar al

camp d’aviació dels Monjos.

Joan and Laura were over the moon to have met two men who were so brave and had so many things to tell them, but they had to get on or, if not, their magic powers would run out in no time and they would not be able to help out with the war archaeology research. So they got themselves ready to go to the airfield of Els Monjos.

—Laura, Laura, em sents? —va cridar en Joan com un boig en trobar-se la seva

companya estirada a terra.

—Potser haurem de trucar a una ambulància —va dir una dona que acompanyava en

Joan, mentre li mirava el pols.

A la Laura, les paraules d’en Joan i d’aquella dona li arribaven molt llunyanes, els sentia

però no era capaç de reaccionar. Només sentia un terrible mal al cap, i mentre esperava

que el seu cos fos capaç de moure’s va començar a pensar en com havia arribat allà.

«Ostres, he vist com abatien el xato d’en Joan Carles! Però no pot ser, jo no puc haver vist

com l’aviació republicana lluitava a la batalla de l’Ebre contra l’exèrcit franquista! I llavors,

què faig aquí? Ara ho començo a recordar: era a classe amb en Joan preparant la cantada

de Nadal quan ens van venir a buscar per col·laborar en una nova recerca. És clar, ara ho

entenc, eren de l’Estació Territorial de Recerca Penedès (ETRP), i volien que els ajudéssim

en una investigació que estan fent amb un grup de recerca de la Universitat de Barcelona

sobre un dels camp d’aviació que formava part del vesper de la Gloriosa, el camp d’aviació

republicà dels Monjos.» La Laura tenia un diàleg a l’interior del seu cap mentre en Joan i

aquella dona feien una trucada pel telèfon mòbil.

‘Laura, Laura, can you hear me?’, shouted Joan like a madman, finding his friend laid out on the ground. ‘We might have to call an ambulance,’ said the woman who was with Joan, while taking Laura’s pulse. Laura could just about hear the words spoken by Joan and the woman, but she was unable to answer them. The only thing she could feel was an almighty headache. And while she waited for her body to recover enough strength to be able to move, she started thinking how she had ended up there.

Oh my word!, she said to herself, I saw how they were swooping down on Joan Carles’ I-15! But it can’t be! How can I have seen

how the Republican Air Force fought in the Battle of Ebro against Franco’s army?! And what am I doing here? I’m starting to remember now… I was in class with Joan, practising for the Christmas carol singing, when we were called to help out with some new research. That’s it! Now I understand. They were from the Territorial Station of Penedès Research (ETRP), and they wanted us to help them with research they are doing with a group from the University of Barcelona on one of the airfields that was part of the Vesper de la Gloriosa, the Republican airfield of Els Monjos. Laura thought all this through to herself while Joan and the woman were making a phone call.

—Ara ve en Derek. Abans d’estudiar història, va estudiar uns anys medicina, segur

que ens podrà dir si és greu o no —va dir la dona.

«És clar», continuava pensant la Laura, que de tant fer memòria s’oblidava d’intentar

moure les extremitats.

«Llavors va ser quan li

vaig fúmer aquella bronca

a en Joan per no haver

esmorzat prou perquè

se’ns activessin els poders

màgics. Gairebé el mato! És

la segona vegada que m’ho

fa, sort que duia aquelles

xocolatines. Potser em vaig

passar, però s’ho té ben

merescut, o no? Em vaig

passar? M’ho deu tenir en

compte? Segur que no, ell

sempre és tan bo...»

‘Derek’s on his way now. He studied Medicine for a few years before studying History so he’ll be able to tell us if it’s serious or not,’ said the woman.

Of course!, said Laura to herself, who had forgotten all about trying to move her body parts with all the thinking she was doing. And it was then that I gave Joan a right telling off for not having had enough breakfast to activate our magic powers. I nearly killed him! It’s the second time he’s done that to me: lucky I had some chocolate on me. Maybe I got a bit carried away. But he deserved it, didn’t he? Did I go too far? Will he hold it against me? Probably not. He’s always so good…

—Ep, que obre els ulls! —va exclamar en Derek tot just

quan es disposava a mirar-li les constants vitals.

—Laura, estàs bé? Em pots sentir?

La Laura va assentir somrient i tothom va respirar

alleugerit. Com que feia estona que l’equip de recerca en

arqueologia de guerra s’havia separat per mirar de trobar

restes de l’activitat que es duia a terme al camp d’aviació

durant la Guerra Civil, no sabien què li podia haver passat,

però el que sí que tenien era la prova d’un bon cop en

forma de bony enorme que la Laura tenia al cap.

Després de parlar amb ella, a en Derek li semblava que

la Laura estava perfectament, però abans d’anar a sopar

anirien a un centre mèdic perquè li fessin una anàlisi més

acurada del seu estat, per descartar que no hagués pres

mal de veritat.

—Potser s’ha entrebancat amb aquesta rasa poc

profunda.

—Pot ser... Per a què servia?

—Per protegir-se de les bombes i la metralla dels avions

enemics que de tant en tant atacaven aquest camp

d’aviació republicà.

—Qui ho havia de dir, que aquest petit forat a terra que

servia per protegir-se dels atacs enemics, ara, tants anys

després, servís per obrir-te el cap —va fer broma en Joan.

‘Hey, she’s opening her eyes!’, exclaimed Derek, just as he was about to check her vital signs.

‘Laura. Are you OK? Can you hear me?’

Laura nodded, smiling, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief. The archaeology of war research team had split up a while ago to look for remains of the activities carried out at the airfield during the Spanish Civil War, and so they had no idea what had happened to Laura. But what they now found was hard evidence of quite a blow in the form of an almighty bump on Laura’s forehead.

After talking to her, Derek decided that everything seemed fine, but that they would pop into A&E before dinner so they could check her out properly and to rule out anything serious.

‘Maybe she tripped over this deep ditch here.’

‘Maybe… What was it for anyway?’

‘To hide from the bombs and shrapnel that fell from the enemy planes that sometimes attacked this Republican airfield.’

‘Who would have thought that, many years later, this little hole in the ground that had helped to protect them from enemy attacks would be responsible for splitting your head open!’, joked Joan.

—Però per la posició d’on estava estirada, tinc els meus dubtes... I si l’han atacada?

—Atacada? —En Joan va obrir els ulls amb esglai.

—Però qui ha de voler atacar-me? Quin interès pot tenir una persona a atacar una

investigadora que tan sols cerca restes de la batalla?

—Podrien ser uns caçatresors.

—Caçatresors? No em puc creure que hi hagi gent que es dediqui a robar les restes de la

batalla, si això ho han de deixar per al personal científic, que les investiga perquè després

tothom les pugui contemplar als museus.

—Sí, és terrible que hi hagi gent que vulgui

vendre peces de la batalla.

—També hi ha persones que volen les

restes per quedar-se-les.

—Hauria d’estar prohibit que poguessin

utilitzar detectors de metalls.

—Si ho està, però ja se sap que a

vegades la gent només pensa en ella

mateixa i entra amb els detectors al camp

de batalla a buscar restes.

—Però si això és patrimoni de tothom! La

gent hauria de ser menys egoista!

—És veritat, com poden ser tan egoistes

i voler-ho només per a ells o per vendre-

ho?

‘But from where she was lying I have my doubts... What if she was attacked?’

‘Attacked?!’ Joan’s eyes nearly popped out of his head.

‘But who would want to attack me? Who could be interested in attacking a researcher who’s just looking for the remains of battle?’ ‘Maybe it was treasure hunters.’

‘Treasure hunters? I can’t believe there are people who would go around robbing the remains of battle. They should leave it to the scientists who are doing their research so that everyone can see

them afterwards in museums.’

‘Yes, it’s terrible that there are some people going around selling pieces from battles.’

‘And there are some people who want to keep them for themselves.’

‘They shouldn’t be allowed to use metal detectors.’

‘Well they’re not, actually. We all know that sometimes people just think about themselves and they go into the battlefield with their detectors looking for remains.’

‘But that’s heritage that belongs to everyone! People shouldn’t be so selfish!’

‘It’s true. How can they be so selfish and want them just for themselves or to sell them?’

L’equip de recerca va deixar enrere la discussió sobre els furtius que feien servir

detectors de metalls per robar els tresors de la batalla, i es van dividir per parelles

per continuar buscant restes a la zona del camp d’aviació dels Monjos. Cada

parella duia el seu corresponent detector de metalls i un aparell GPS per anar

marcant els llocs on feien les troballes. Així, en acabar, quan passessin les dades

a l’ordinador tindrien un mapa exacte dels indrets on havien trobat les restes.

—Mira, Eva, aquí sembla que hi veig alguna cosa.

—Treu-ho amb compte, Joan. Sembla un botó d’uniforme republicà... Fica’l amb

les pinces a la bossa, al laboratori ja l’acabarem d’estudiar.

—Però també podria ser d’un mecànic del camp d’aviació, oi?

—I tant, Joan, o també dels armers, els que preparaven les armes dels avions, per

això et deia que només ho sabrem del cert quan l’estudiem amb deteniment.

—Aquí sona, aquí sona, Derek!

—Tranquil·la, Laura. Anem a excavar-ho amb compte. Òndia!, sembla un

embellidor de roda de cotxe.

—Encara es veu la marca del cotxe: Chevrolet.

En algun atac al camp devien enganxar

un dels cotxes que tenien els pilots

per desplaçar-se.

‘Look, Eva, I think I can see something here.’

‘Take it out carefully, Joan. It looks like the button of a Republican uniform… Put in the bag with the pincers; we’ll take a good look at it later in the laboratory.’

‘But it could also be from one of the mechanics of the airfield, couldn’t it?’

‘It certainly could, Joan. Or maybe one of the gunsmiths, those who prepared the arms for the planes. That’s why I was saying that we’ll only know for sure when we study it properly in the laboratory.’

‘It’s bleeping here. Right here, Derek!’

‘OK, Laura, it’s okay. We’ll excavate here very carefully. Goodness me! It looks like the wheel trims of a car.’

‘You can still see the make of it: a Chevrolet.’

‘They must have hit one of the cars that the pilots used to get around in during one of the attacks on the field.’

The research team soon stopped talking about the poachers who used metal detectors to rob battle treasures and split up into pairs to continue looking for remains in the airfield of Els Monjos. Each pair took a metal detector and a GPS device with them to mark the spot where they found remains. This way, when they had finished, they would be able to put the data on the computer and they would have an exact map of the places where they had found the remains.

That day they ended their search before they would have liked, but they had to take Laura for a check-up to make sure that the bump or fall hadn’t caused any serious harm. Fortunately, it turned out to be just an almighty bump and nothing else. After dinner, they went to bed early because they had a busy day of research ahead of them the next day at the airfield of Els Monjos.

Aquell dia van acabar la cerca abans

del que haurien volgut, però havien de

dur la Laura a fer-li un reconeixement

mèdic per assegurar-se que el cop o la

caiguda no havien estat res. Per sort,

només era un bony espectacular, però

res més. Després de sopar, van anar

d’hora a descansar, perquè l’endemà

els esperava un dia intens de recerca al

camp d’aviació dels Monjos.

—Mira, això no són les ulleres d’un pilot?

—I tant! Agafa-les amb compte que no es trenquin i cap a la bossa.

Un dels descobriments més emocionants el van fer abans de l’hora de dinar. Si bé durant el matí

havien trobat algunes peces de munició, restes del que podria ser una bomba i un altre botó,

el que més va cridar l’atenció de l’equip de recerca en arqueologia de guerra va ser un cargol

bastant gros.

—Aquí, aquí, veniu! Em sembla que he trobat una cosa aquí sota.

—Cavem amb compte.

—Vols dir que aquest aparell funciona? Ja li has canviat les piles, Laura?

—Paciència..., ja sabeu que la paciència és la mare de la ciència. No tot sempre es troba tan

fàcilment. Estarem excavant l’estona que calgui fins que trobem el que ha captat el detector.

—Ja ho tinc, ja ho tinc! —va exclamar excitada la Laura.

—Ostres! Quin tros de

cargol! Si és d’avió,

de quina banda deu

ser? —rumiava en

Joan.

—Jo crec que podria

ser de l’ala, no, Eva?

—va suggerir la Laura

mentre el ficava amb

molta cura en una

bossa de plàstic

transparent.

‘Look! Aren’t these pilot goggles?’

‘They certainly are! Get hold of them carefully so they don’t break and pop them in the bag.’

They made one of the most exciting discoveries before lunchtime.

While they had found some pieces of ammunition in the morning, including the remains of what could have been a bomb and another button, what really caught the archaeology of war research team’s eye was a fairly large screw.

‘Here, here, come quickly! I think I’ve found something down below here.’

‘Let’s dig carefully.’

‘Do you really think this device works? Have you changed the batteries, Laura?’

‘Patience… You know full well that patience is the mother of all virtues. You can’t always find everything so easily. We’ll excavate as long as we need to until we find what it is the detector has picked up.’

‘I’ve got it, I’ve got it!’, exclaimed Laura, full of excitement.

‘Wow! What a screw that is! If it’s from a plane, which part would it be from?’, asked Joan.

‘I think it could be from one of the wings, don’t you think, Eva?’, suggested Laura, as she placed it ever so carefully in a see-through bag.

—Pot ser. Al

laboratori ens

n’acabarem

—Seria increïble

que fos d’aquell

xato que va

caure del cel

perquè se li va

desprendre una

ala.

—Què?

—Sí, ho vaig llegir ahir al vespre abans d’anar a dormir. Els mecànics es van oblidar

d’ajustar a un xato el cargol que subjectava una de les ales, i quan estava volant se li va

desprendre.

—Caram, quina por haver de fer un aterratge d’emergència amb una avioneta tan petita

i sense una ala... T’imagines que anés a la seva màxima velocitat, a 360 quilòmetres per

hora?

—Uf, i tant! Calia tenir molta valentia per pilotar aquells avions —li va donar la raó la

Laura, a qui entrava un calfred només de pensar-hi... El somni havia estat tan real!

‘Maybe. We’ll find out for sure at the laboratory. But it reminds me of the screws used on the I-15s to keep

their wings in place.’

‘It would be amazing if it was that I-15 that crashed because it lost one of its wings.’

‘What?’

‘Yeah, I read about it last night before going to sleep. The mechanics forgot to adjust one of the screws that held the wings to the plane and when it was in the air it came

off.’

‘Oh my gosh! How scary, having to do an emergency landing in such a small plane,

with one wing missing… Can you imagine it going at its full speed, at 360 kilometres per

hour?!’

‘Wow! Just imagine! You had to be really brave to pilot one of those planes,’ agreed Laura, who felt a shiver go through her just thinking about it… So her dream was real after all!

La intensitat del que vivien feia que el dia els passés volant. Van fer tots els àpats

a base d’entrepans que s’havien endut a l’antic camp d’aviació republicà. S’hi van

estar tantes hores allà com temps enrere els pilots, els armadors i els mecànics

que treballaven als camps del vesper de la Gloriosa, que davant la intensitat de la

batalla passaven la major part del temps al camp d’aviació.

The intensity of everything made the day go by in a flash. They got by on sandwiches they had taken with them to the old Republican airfield. They spent as many hours there as the pilots, gunsmiths and mechanics had done back in the days when they worked at the airfields of the Vesper de la Gloriosa, spending most of their time at the airfield throughout the intense battle.

En Joan va veure el refugi antiaeri de mas

Serradell, que havia tingut capacitat per refugiar

cent vint persones dels atacs de l’aviació

franquista, i va tenir una premonició.

—Vols endur-te el detector?

—No cal, és que tinc un pressentiment —va

dir en Joan, que, mentre la resta de l’equip de

recerca feia cerques amb el detector de metalls,

es va dedicar una estona a excavar al terra del

refugi.

Després de passar força temps excavant en un

racó del refugi antiaeri que li semblava sospitós,

va deixar anar un crit carregat d’emocions.

—Joan, què et passa? Què has trobat?

—Mireu, una foto i una carta sense segell dins

una caixa de llautó! —Els ho va ensenyar sense

poder contenir les llàgrimes als ulls, a les quals de

seguida es va afegir la resta de l’equip de recerca.

Era tan emocionant, són tan cruels les guerres...

Joan saw the air raid shelter of Mas Serradell, which had been able to shelter up to one hundred and twenty people from the air attacks of the Franco regime, and he had a premonition.

‘Do you want the detector?’

‘No, it’s just I’ve got a funny feeling,’ said Joan, who was excavating the ground inside the shelter while the rest of the research team were searching around with their metal detectors.

After spending quite some time digging in one of the corners of the air raid shelter that had caught his attention, he let out an excited shout.

‘Joan, what’s happened? What have you found?’

‘Look: a photo and a letter with no stamp inside a tin box!’ He showed it to everyone, barely holding back his tears, and soon the rest of the research team joined them. It was so moving. Wars are so cruel...

En ser hivern, la nit queia aviat sobre el campament, fet

que donava per acabada la col·laboració

de la Laura i en Joan en aquella recerca.

La troballa que havia fet en Joan els havia

deixat un xic trasbalsats. Així que com

l’Eva i en Derek no volien que en Joan i la

Laura es quedessin tan tristos i els volien

agrair l’ajuda, abans d’anar a sopar els

van convidar al sorprenent lloc en el qual

passaven la nit els aviadors republicans: la

Giralda de l’Arboç.

—M’agradaria tant poder continuar la

recerca amb vosaltres...

—És fascinant estudiar el passat, sempre

ho dic, n’hem d’aprendre tant!

—Doncs ja ho sabeu, estudieu història i de

grans ens podreu ajudar.

—Això, això, ben segur que encara

quedarà un valuós patrimoni per rescatar i

estudiar.
