The Olive Oil Route

The production of Lleida’s olive oil – widely

considered one of the best in the world – is

concentrated in and around about thirty villages in

the rural districts of les Garrigues, l’Urgell and el Segrià.

The Valley of the Vultures

The Terreta de Tremp is a rather special place in el Pallars Jussà, which lies on

the Valley of the Vultures Route and can be reached either from Tremp or from

the road to the Val d’Aran by following a 31 km trail: Tremp-Pont d’Orrit-Torre de

Tamúrcia-Espluga de Serra-Castellet-Sapeira-Pont d’Orrit-Tremp. This is a low

difficulty route and one that can be walked throughout the year, but particularly

in spring and summer, when it is possible to see migrating birds. It is also important

to stress the variety of both the local scenery and the geology of the region. The

area also boasts a rich variety of fauna including the griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus),

the lammergeyer (Gypaetus barbatus), the Egyptian vulture (Neophron pernocpterus)

and the peregrine falcon (falcó pregrinus).

This route takes visitors to three quite unique museums in el Pallars: the Museu

de la Conca Dellà, at Isona; the Museu dels Raiers (rafters’ museum), at el Pont

de Claverol, and the Ecomuseu de les Valls d'Àneu, in Esterri d’Àneu. The Museu

de la Conca Dellà takes visitors on a journey back to the time of the dinosaurs,

offering guided visits to remains from the Cretaceous period at la Posa, where it is

possible to see the footprints left behind by these prehistoric creatures. The Museu dels

Raiers provides an insight into the now lost profession of guiding logs down rivers and

explains the process of working with the wood and shows the tools that used to be

used. The main element in the Ecomuseu de les Valls d'Àneu is Casa Gassia, which

provides an insight into what used to constitute traditional life in the mountains. Other

interesting elements forming part of the Ecomuseu include the old sawmill at Alós and

another group of historic buildings at Son. Other places that deserve a visit include

Peramea, Llagunes and the Museu de la Fusta (Wood Museum) at Àreu.

This route can be divided into four separate itineraries. The route

allows visitors to combine viewing attractive landscapes with visiting

interesting monuments and also takes them to some of the leading

wineries in western Catalonia. The first of the proposed routes

runs from Artesa de Segre to Castell del Remei, including a visit

to the cellars of Vall de Baldomar – famous for excellent white,

rosé and red wines – and to the Castell del Remei, though without

forgetting to visit Tremp too. The second route follows the valleys

of the river Corb; starting from Tàrrega and finishing in Montblanc.

Other places that must be visited on this route are Verdú, a village

with a long winemaking tradition, Vallbona de les Monges and els Omells de na

Gaia, which offers high quality white wines. The third itinerary passes through les

Garrigues, starting from Vinaixa and running as far as les Borges Blanques. As well as

fine wines, Vinaixa, l'Albi, Cervià de les Garrigues and les Borges Blanques also produce

very good quality olive oil. The final route starts from the city of Lleida and takes visitors

to Raimat and the extensive plantations of cabernet, merlot, chardonnay and pinot noir

that provide excellent quality wines for the cellars founded by Manel Raventós in 1914.

The Good Men’s Route

This Cathar route, which is popularly known as the

Good Men’s Route, is a 189 km tourist trail that runs

from the sanctuary of Queralt to the castle of Montsegur

(in France). It is a route that can be travelled by mountain

bike, on foot, or on horseback. The Good Men’s route,

which is now officially recognised as long distance footpath

GR-107, offers visitors the chance to retrace the migration

routes used by Cathar monks between the 12th and 14th centuries,

when they had to flee from the persecution of the crusaders and the

Spanish Inquisition. The itinerary allows visitors to discover medieval

villages, Romanesque churches and castles. As well as its historical

interest, the route also passes through the protected area of the Cadi-

Moixeró Natural Park. This offers visitors the possibility to contemplate

beautiful scenery and to visit villages like Gósol that are simply full of

beauty and tradition. Beyond Gósol, there is an alternative part to the

Good Men’s Route that heads towards Josa de Cadí, Tuixent, la Coma,

Sant Llorenç de Morunys, Coll de Jou, Odèn, Timoneda, Lladurs and

Solsona, before f inal ly reaching the Miracle sanctuary.

The Castle Route

One of the most interesting itineraries for those

visiting the Lands of Lleida is the Castle Route.

The castles in question are not immense

fortresses, but they are well conserved buildings

that offer visitors an insight into life in this area

during the medieval period, when this territory

was effectively the frontier between the Arab and

Christian worlds. The classic Lleida Castle Route

includes seven fortresses: Montsonís, in la Noguera;

Montclar, in l’Urgell; Florejacs, les Pallargues and Vicfred,

in la Segarra; Mur, in el Pallars Jussà; and la Floresta, in les Garrigues.

(Regular guided tours are organised, without the need for prior

booking, for both individuals and small groups. These take place on

Sundays at 11.00, 12.00 and 13:00. There are also visits on Saturdays at

17:00, 18:00 and 19:00 to the castles of Montsonis and Mur. It is also

possible to organise castle visits, by prior appointment, on any other day

of the week.) As well as the previously mentioned monuments, it is also

possible to visit, by previous arrangement with their respective village

authorities, the castles of Verdú and Ciutadella, in l’Urgell, and those of

Espluga Calba and Albi, in les Garrigues.

possible to continue along the route as far as the village of Espui and also to the

neighbouring Àssua valley in el Pallars Sobirà. Access is via the L-503 highway

at Capdella, and from there it continues to the Sallente reservoir, from where a

cable railway takes visitors to Estany Gento. The cable railway is operative from

July to September. Another alternative is to go there via Espui, following the

forest track from la Collada del Triador.

The Reapers’ RouteThe Reapers’ Route, which starts at the village of Gósol is also

known as the Road to Cerdanya, as it leads to Bellver de

Cerdanya. In times past, this route was often used by reapers,

mule drivers, Catalan militias, highwaymen, musicians and

smugglers. It was also followed by the painter Pablo Ruiz Picasso

in 1906, during his stay at the village of Gósol. This historical

route, which is now signposted, crosses the Serra de Cadí (Cadi

ridge) and can be walked in seven or eight hours. Along the journey,

travellers can discover a number of unique landscapes and also see some

of the Pyrenean fauna in the Cadi-Moixeró Natural Park. In winter, it is possible to

follow the same route using skis or snowshoes. It is also possible to do the Reapers’

Route over two days, as it is possible to spend a night at the Cèsar August Torras

mountain refuge and then continue the route the following day.

CONSEJO COMARCAL DEL ALT URGELL: Tel. 973 35 31 12 - www.ccau.net

The main objective of this ethnographically interesting route

that runs through the district of l’Alt Urgell is to make visitors

aware of the different ways of life, customs and types of

socioeconomic activity that have had an important influence

on this region in previous times. The route has been organised

around a series of interesting sites and thematic museums.

One of these is the Museu de la Vinya i el Vi (Vine and Wine

Museum) in Pont de Bar, which makes visitors aware of the

region’s thousand year wine making tradition. The Museu de la

Llana (Wool Museum) at Arsèguel shows how a fulling mill used

to work in the 17th century. In Calbinyà, the Museu del Pagès,

introduces visitors to the traditional lifestyle of a smallholder with

a house in the mountains. At Coll de Nargó, it is possible to visit the

Museu dels Raiers (river rafters) and to learn about this traditional

occupation. At the old La Trobada flour mill, in Montferrer, visitors

can learn about the process for making flour. Other interesting

and indeed unique places to visit in l’Alt Urgell that will remind

visitors of past professions include the old Pou de Gel

(ice well) at Oliana and the Museu de les Trementinaires

(Turpentine Museum) at Tuixent. At the latter, visitors

can discover numerous herbal remedies and

learn more about this fascinating craft.

The Water Route

The Water Route - Port de Vielha

begins at the former hospital in Vielha,

at the mouth of the south side of the

tunnel and ends, 15.8 km later, in the capital

of the Val d’Arán. Along the route, hikers can discover

some of Aran’s least known landscapes and contemplate

the sight of fir, oak and beech forests, as well as enjoying

exceptional views from the Port de Vielha and discovering

why the route is called as it is. The water that surges from

the mountains is constantly present throughout the majority of

the itinerary. It is also possible to enjoy magnificent views of imposing

mountains such as el Forcanada, el Tuc de Molières and to see the

peaks of Aneto and Maladeta, amongst others. It is recommended

to take two cars when following this route: it is possible to leave

one at the beginning and the other at the end of the itinerary. It is

possible to complete the route in about 5 _ hours, with it involving

a change in altitude of 844 metres.

La rThe districts of Lleida house an important collection of cave

art which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1998.

Of the 16 different sites in Lleida province at which it is possible

to see these remains, it is necessary to highlight the Roca dels

Moros, near Cogul, which is one of the most important sites in

Catalonia. This collection of naturalistic art forms, which dates from

the end of the Palaeolithic period, was discovered in 1908. It consists

of 42 human and animal figures grouped in hunting scenes and also

includes a further 250 engravings. Another site worthy of special mention

is the Cova dels Vilassos (or Cova dels Vilars), which is to be found in the

gorge of the same name, near the village of Os de Balaguer. This Bronze Age

site houses 29 schematic figures. Other collections of cave art that are open to

visitors include: la Vall de la Coma and les Roques Guàrdies, in les Garrigues;

Aparets I, II, III and IV, Antona I, II and III, the Cova del Tabac and the Cova del

Cogulló, in la Noguera, and the Roc Rumbau or Roca dels Moros, in l’Alt Urgell.

One of the most spectacular monument itineraries in the city of Lleida is the one that

invites visitors to discover its most emblematic treasures: The Seu Vella (old cathedral)

and the Palau de la Paeria (City Hall). The latter, which is one of the most important

Romanesque style examples of civil architecture in Catalonia and the seat of the

Ajuntament de Lleida (Lleida City Council), houses historic remains dating from the 5th

century BC to the 18th century CE, including the Arxiu Municipal (Municipal Archive)

and the Saló del Retaule (Hall of the Altarpiece). The Plaça Sant Joan (Saint John’s

Square), which is an important meeting point for local people, is presided over by the

Neo-Gothic style church of the same name and there is an interesting conjugation of

traditional atmosphere and modern urbanism. The Seu Vella, which is the city’s best

vantage point and is surrounded by the longest perimeter wall in Europe, also houses

the ancient Moorish fort, called La Suda. The Seu Vella cathedral is a magnificent

Romanesque-Gothic architectural complex consisting of a temple, cloister and steeple.
