Historical Background of the Santo Niño Devotion and the Sinulog

The story of Santo Niño dates back to the discovery of the Philip-pines by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, and the Christianization of the islands. The statue of the Holy Child Jesus, believed to have come from Belgium, was given to Humamay, later christened as Queen Juana, wife of the native leader, Rajah Humabon. There was natural resistance to the Spanish conquistadores by the natives of the islands, and from the remains of battle after battle between them, the image of the Santo Nino was discovered in a box. The box contained the un-scathed image of the Child Jesus, which up to the present day is vis-ited and honored in the Basilica Del Santo Niño in Cebu City, Philip-pines.

Every January, the Philippine nation celebrates and honors the Holy Child Jesus with processions, fluvial parades, dancing and prayers. At St. Justin’s we honor this tradition along with Filipino peo-ple around the world, by paying homage to the miracles that they have received from the Señor Santo Niño. We will see the ladies or “damas” of Queen Juana, dancing to the drumbeat of the Sinulog mu-sic. The Sinulog dance honors the Santo Niño and petitions are uttered after each step of the dance. The dancers accompany the Queen’s court as the Queen invokes the Santo Niño to listen to her prayers and continue to grant her petitions and those of her people. Following Queen Juana are children with flowers, and candy offerings. Filipinos believe that as a child, Jesus enjoys the presence and the company of little children.

The Waters of Baptism When new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation

with water. Landscapers say that this "knits" the sod to the soil. The same when a branch is grafted onto a tree: the poultice that joins them at the splice must be kept wet at all times. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all times and cultures have used it so prominently. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he "knit" him-self to what had come before him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Bap-tist, Christ wove himself into the prophetic tradition that heralded the coming reign of God. He had become fully human in the waters of Mary's womb, and by partaking in the rite of the baptism of repentance, Jesus identified him-self with our sinful, frail humanity. It is through the wa-ters of baptism that Christ continues to graft new mem-bers onto his Body, the Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin and filled with the promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. Treasures from our Tradition In the 1560s, the Council of Trent attempted to stan-

dardize the widely variant customs for the pastoral care of the sick and dying. We had inherited a practice called "extreme unction," from the Latin words meaning anoint-ing at the point of death. The deeper tradition, however, is about the prayer of faith that will heal and restore the sick person, and is straight from the Letter of James. The Fa-thers went back to the beginning, and while not discard-ing the "extreme unction" name, made a plea for the proper use of this sacrament. As soon as a person is in danger of death from sickness or old age, they reasoned, the time for the sacrament had already arrived.

As a result of this desire, the next ritual text for anointing contained an innovation: a rite for visiting the sick that included readings from scripture, psalms, and prayers. Old customs fade slowly, however, and the qual-ity of pastoral care languished for centuries while people delayed the celebration of a consoling and effective sacra-ment, sometimes missing the opportunity completely. A priest ministering to a dying and unconscious patient alone in a room has never been the desire of the Church. A lector’s proclamation of the Word of God can evoke faith in others by demonstrating one’s own faith. Lectors pub-licly read Scripture and proclaim the Word at Sunday and weekday Masses and other liturgies. More men and women are needed to become a part of this ministry at St. Justin, which is truly a service to the Church.

If you are interested, please fill out a discernment form available online (go to saintjustin.org > Ministries > Worship > Lectors) and in the Parish Office. You may choose the Mass times at which you would be willing to serve. Lectors must have received the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation, and if married, be married in the Catholic Church. Fr. Ven Amidar will be reviewing the forms received and speaking to those who are interested. Training will be provided in January-February.

Thank you Filipino Community This past December 13th our Filipino Community

hosted a Christmas dinner/dance to raise funds for the parish. The income for the parish was $3,395.14. Added to this donation was $1,000 in donations from the festivities of the Simbang Gabi (novena of nine very early morning Masses before Christmas). Thanks to all who participated in these events.

Day of Reparation for Abortion 42nd Observance of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision

In observance of the Supreme Court Decision Roe v. Wade that legalized abortion, Bishop Vann invites all the Catholic community to observe the day as a Day of Reparation. Catholics are encouraged to practice fasting, abstinence, and prayer on that day.

You are invited to attend an Evening Prayer on Thursday, Janu-ary 22 to pray for an end to abortion and a renewed respect for all hu-man life in American society. The service will begin at 7 p.m. in the Arboretum of Christ Cathedral. A reception and ministry fair will fol-low in the 1st floor of the Cultural Center.

I understand that if all flowers wanted to be roses. na-ture would lose her springtime beauty, and the fields would be no longer be decked out with little wild flowers. So it is in the world of souls, Jesus' garden. He has created smaller ones and those must be content to be daises or violets destined to give joy to God's glances when he looks down at His feet. Reflexiones sobre la Palabra Una celebración del amor de Dios

Isaías 55:1-11 El banquete aludido o la fiesta especial de celebración se relacionan con las misericordias hechas a David. Así como el famoso rey de Israel era presentado como testigo y mensajero divino para los otros monarcas, así el pueblo debería de hacer lo mismo con las otras naciones. De hecho, el pacto eterno, que era principalmente una promesa de permanencia de la dinastía davídica, no se había roto, porque durante el exilio se mantuvo viva la esperanza de restauración y retorno a Jerusalén en la figura de Joaquín y sus descendientes. En la tradición bíblica, la conclusión de la alianza iba acompañada de señales y signos especiales. El pacto tendrá un signo extraordinario: la renovación y transformación de la naturaleza.

1 Juan 5:1-9 Se establece aquí la unión entre amar y creer. El autor decía que todo el que ama ha nacido de Dios y ahora dice que todo el que cree que Jesús es el Cristo ha nacido de Dios, y todo el que ama al que le da el ser debe amar también a quien lo recibe de él. La fe que vence al mundo es victo-ria y el que cree es vencedor. Al hacer esta afirmación, el autor añade un toque de esperanza. El mundo se vence con la fe, con el amor y con la alegría.

Marcos 1:7-11 La palabra bautismo está tomada del griego de un verbo que significa sumergir. Poco a poco el término adquiere el sentido técnico que tiene en el lenguaje cristiano. Juan no se considera digno de atarle las sandalias “al que viene”. El anuncio de Juan termina con la comparación de dos bautis-mos: él bautiza con agua, pero el que viene lo hace en el Espíritu Santo. Juan practica un rito de purificación exterior; Jesús da aquello que posee en plenitud. El contexto da a entender que el bautismo de Juan abrió los corazones a la conversión, de manera que ahora pueden recibir la gracia de la Nueva Alianza.

Nuestra cultura: A menudo las familias esperan para bautizar a un niño a tener bastante dinero para celebrarlo... pero, aunque es siempre bueno festejar y celebrar, lo más importante es el sentido más profundo de la celebración: el banquete de la familia de Dios, que es gratuito.

Reflexiones para la homilía Soñamos con que nos toque la lotería, con tener más co-

sas, con poder disponer de fondos para viajar, comprar, disfru-tar de la vida… Hoy se nos dice que somos riquísimos ya: que tenemos todo lo que necesitamos y más en gran abundancia. Se nos ha invitado a un banquete abundantísimo de la gracia y el don de Dios. No hace falta comprar nada, ni llevar regalos. No tenemos que ser ricos ni que ser de un lugar específico. Lo único que nos hace falta es abrir el corazón y reconocer quiénes somos: familia de Dios por nuestro bautismo. Reconocer quié-nes somos nos hace reconocer también quién es Jesús: Hijo de Dios amado, enviado a cumplir la misión de Dios. La misión de Dios, simplemente, es anunciar el amor. Comunicar la Buena Noticia de que no tenemos que andar solos; no tenemos que ser esclavos de nada ni de nadie; que somos los herederos del Re-ino. Comunicar la Buena Noticia es extender la hospitalidad del banquete de Dios a todos; es anunciar a quienes sienten que necesitan “cosas” para ser alguien, que basta con el agua, el pan, los manjares de Dios; es anunciar a quienes se sienten solos, despreciados y caídos, que el Dios que reconoce a Jesús como su Hijo amado, los reconoce a ellos también, a cada uno por su nombre, como sus hijos amados.

El bautismo de Jesús, por Juan, fue un signo de que Jesús aceptaba su misión y que, como Hijo amado de Dios, no esca-paría de ella. Fue el anuncio para todos sus seguidores de que, en ese sumergirse, enterrarse, y volver a resurgir, como símbo-lo de vida y muerte, de nuestro propio Bautismo encontramos una nueva identidad. Ya no somos pobres, ni estamos abatidos, ni somos despreciados, aunque a los ojos del mundo así parez-ca: somos hijos de un Padre de amor que nos invita a un ban-quete de abundancia y gloria. No nos hace falta ganar la lotería.

Para la reflexión ¿Me sitúo a veces en una posición de “escasez”, como si me faltaran cosas? ¿Cómo aprecio el don de mi Bautismo? ¿Cómo agradezco las infinitas misericordias de Dios para conmigo? ¿En qué actos cotidianos de mi vida reconozco esa fuerte pre-sencia de Dios que me comunica quién soy para Él?

¿Quién les va a predicar? Uno de los pasajes de las Escrituras más motivadores que co-

nozco es el de San Pablo en la carta a la iglesia de Roma. Los roma-nos no aceptaban plenamente a Pablo, porque no era el fundador de su iglesia y quizá no hablaba totalmente su idioma. Ante el rechazo del evangelio, tuvo el valor de escribirles y llamarlos al servicio: “Pero ¿cómo van a invocarlo, si no han creído en él? ¿Y cómo van a creer en él, si no han oído hablar de él? ¿Y cómo van a oír, si no hay quien les anuncie el mensaje? ¿Y cómo van a anunciar el mensaje, si no son enviados? Como dice la Escritura: “¡Qué hermosa es la llega-da de los que traen buenas noticias!”” (Rom 10:14-15).

Más de una tercera parte de los miembros de la Iglesia Católica de Estados Unidos al presente, son de origen hispano y la mitad de ellos, según el Pew Research Center, hablan español como idioma principal. Al saber que sólo del 10 al 15 por ciento de los sacerdotes hablan a español, es fácil ver que estamos en el mismo lugar que San Pablo… ¿Quién les va a predicar?

La fe católica ofrece algo que ninguna otra puede dar por la pre-sencia constante de Jesús que nos hace un solo cuerpo; pero tenemos que aceptar que, si no hacemos nada para llegar a nuestros fieles hispanohablantes, otras iglesias nos desplazarán. Muchas de nuestras parroquias —donde el amor de Dios se hace presente en cada litur-gia, cada sacramento, cada grupo de servicio, cada programa, cada clase de formación y cada punto de distribución de alimentos— ce-rrarán y la Iglesia será más pobre por esa gran pérdida.

Dios nos ha dado dones para compartirlos con los demás. Dos dones de la comunidad hispana son la afirmación de su herencia y su idioma. El catolicismo es la fe de nuestros padres que llegó hasta ellos por las luchas de muchos santos. Este amor a nuestra herencia es un don que estamos llamados a compartir. ¿Amamos el patrimo-nio de nuestra fe católica lo suficiente para responder al reto de per-derla si no tomamos acción?

En cuanto al don del idioma, ¿cómo pueden creer en quien no han oído? ¿Cómo pueden oír o entender si no hay alguien que hable su idioma? Todos queremos experimentar a Dios en nuestra lengua materna. Quienes son bilingües, tienen un don para llegar a la gente que otros no pueden; tiene el don de hacer a otras personas oír, creer y encontrar a Dios y su palabra de salvación. En vez de esconder ese talento, multiplíquenlo y honren a Dios con él. Se necesitan más mi-sas y ministerios en español, para llevar la Palabra de Dios a nuestros hermanos hispanos.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE ¿Recuerdas tu bautismo? Permítanme compartir mi testimonio. No

recuerdo los eventos del día en que me bautizaron, pero tengo años recor-dando que, gracias a Dios y mis padres, estoy bautizado. Trato de vivir mi vida recordando mi bautismo, buscando que mi comportamiento sea digno de una persona bautizada.

Fui bautizado al mes de haber nacido, y confirmado cuando tenía sólo un añito (eran otros tiempos). Hice mi primera (y no última) comu-nión a los siete años. Continuaba asistiendo a las clases de catecismo (doctrina), no obstante, cuando cumplí 17 años, sentí que algo me faltaba. Mis amigos protestantes me invitaban a sus Iglesias, pero yo buscaba a Dios en mi Iglesia católica. Un día, gracias al grupo carismático recibí el bautismo en el Espíritu Santo y desde ese momento mi vida cambió. Ahora sé que el Espíritu lo había recibido en mi Bautismo, Confirmación y Primera Comunión, lo único que debía hacer era permitirle actuar en mi vida. Creo que en la vida de muchos cristianos, el Espíritu Santo sigue esperando que le den permiso de actuar. Y tú, ¿qué esperas?
