Families in Faith—Communal Living and the Resurrection

The Pentecost season has begun! For the next fifty days the Church celebrates with heightened joy the Resurrection and the empowering life of the Spirit; for the next seven weeks our celebrants recall the fire of the Spirit, culminating on the 50th day, Pentecost, by putting on red vestments. Our lectors proclaim readings taken exclusively from the New Testament. Our first reading (always from the Acts of the Apostles) narrates the life of the early community in which the power of the Resurrection could be witnessed in the transformed lives of Jesus' followers. The opening chapters of Acts describe a community so devoted to one another and to the preaching of the Resurrection that all things were held in common. The needs of each member were met from the abundance of others. The texts declare that there were no needy among them. For some people, that is truly a remarkable claim. Many find it easier to believe in the Resurrection than to believe that people shared all they had and lived communally in support of one another! How difficult it is for us today to identify with the lives of the first followers of Jesus. While we may share their belief in his Resurrection, we do not share the same zeal they possessed for communal living. Our lives are far more private and lived at a distance from one another. Our culture has a greater influence on us than did the Hellenistic culture on early Christians. Their communal living is often perceived as threatening, perhaps sounding a bit too much like Communism for our tastes. Still, their witness can offer us perspective and a challenge for our own days. The early Christians lived communally because they were convinced of the truth of Jesus' message. They had heard him proclaim God's call for us to be his sons and daughters--children of a loving Father who gives his own life to draw creation to salvation. Having experienced the risen Lord, they gave form to their faith by living as one family, pooling resources as families do, sacrificing for one another. They believed that they were bound together by the blood of Jesus--not the blood of clans or races. In the presence of the risen Lord, the kingdom of God and his reign had begun. They could not live in the old ways when the new age had begun. For the followers of Jesus, all things were changed with the presence of the Spirit. Our communities may not be mirror images of that first community, but we can still renew our commitment to see and live as family, placing the good and the needs of others before our own. We can come to the aid of the needy in our parish so that they might say of us, "there were no needy among them." The Spirit's abiding presence insures that there will be grace enabling us to live this challenge. For the past forty days we set aside those things that hindered our relationship with God and others. In these coming fifty days, may we take up the ways of living and giving that speak to our faith in all that God has done in Jesus. May the Resurrection bring us hope and peace. May it enable us to live fully in the reign of God!
